Nora Roberts has a post up at her blog. \u00a0“A day in the life<\/a>” and it’s just that… talks about one of her days.<\/p>\n

Writing for a living is weird. \u00a0It’s nothing like what I’d expected it to be. \u00a0I just planned to write books–yes, from the time I was probably thirteen or so, I planned on being a writer. \u00a0I had a back up plan, yeah. \u00a0I’d be a nurse, then I’d somehow make it big…still trying to figure out the\u00a0make it big<\/em> part, but I’m lucky enough to write.<\/p>\n

But when I was thirteen, we didn’t have email and facebook and twitter…was it easier then? \u00a0I dunno. \u00a0Even if we didn’t have that stuff, I’d still have to deal with the non-writer stuff, I guess.<\/p>\n

My\u00a0writing<\/em>\u00a0part of my day usually doesn’t start until around eleven or noon, on a good day. \u00a0My brain doesn’t shift into gear, unless I’m on the downhill slide and wrapping up a book. \u00a0But I’m working well before that.<\/p>\n

And that’s not including being mama…although naturally, that’s there, always. \u00a0Mama comes first and last and everywhere in between…and that’s why I’m out of bed by 6:30 five days of the week. \u00a0Kid 1 & 2 are mostly independent now, out of bed on their own and the most I have to do with them is play referee over the bathroom…or judge and jury when they get out of hand.<\/p>\n

Kid 3? \u00a0AKA the infamous baby bratlet who isn’t really a baby anymore? \u00a0Oh, wow. \u00a0Different story. \u00a0Things have levelled out…ADHD and mornings aren’t a happy mix, but we’ve finally figured (or I have figured) out the right way to handle mornings and is usually works. \u00a0Some days, though, I’m more frazzled by the time she goes than I am after talking with my editor<\/del> \u00a0reading the ‘here’s what ya gotta fix’ notes from my editor<\/del>\u00a0driving through New York City<\/del>… I’m just frazzled. \u00a0I blogged about learning about her ADHD <\/a>diagnosis a while back…it’s not the discipline issue so many people think and it’s not just being hyper. \u00a0It is an ongoing learning experience. \u00a0And sometimes frazzling.<\/p>\n

Frazzled or not, come 8:30…ish… my time is usually mine, or mine for work. \u00a0Email…<\/p>\n

Hi,Shiloh! \u00a0I got the MS in… I’ll be reading it soon and it’s time to cover conference…but we’ve got to consider changing the title. \u00a0There are a few other books out there with a similar title and…<\/em>\u00a0Gaping. Staring in shock at email from editor. \u00a0But I WROTE the entire book around the premise of that title. \u00a0IT FITS! Seething. Brooding. Emails friend. \u00a0Seeths to friend. \u00a0Ponders. \u00a0Tosses titles around. \u00a0Friend helps come up with title that hasn’t been used…will come up with a way to THIS title and make the story play off it more than the other title. \u00a0And now title will stand out. \u00a0Fine. \u00a0But I’ll still sulk.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Takes a break, stares at inbox. \u00a0Gulps.<\/p>\n

Email from assistant… did you get my invoice?<\/em>\u00a0Eep! \u00a0Yes, just finished book, brain leeking out ears. \u00a0Check in mail, promise.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Goes to play on twitter a little. \u00a0See GR link to an author meltdown–eyes the email in inbox.\u00a0#headdesk<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Knock at the door. Jehovah’s Witness. Smile, take flyer. \u00a0Disappear inside the house.<\/p>\n

Sits at desk, tackles edits on RS.<\/p>\n

Goes back to twitter. \u00a0The brouhaha about author meltdown has exploded. \u00a0It’s approaching critical mass. \u00a0Tweets funny pics from Depressed Darth instead.<\/p>\n

Edits a few more pages.<\/p>\n

Almost noon. \u00a0Hungry. \u00a0Did I remember to run?<\/p>\n

Food achieved, edited 20 pages. Time to write.<\/p>\n

Can’t get motivated… I know! Check into twitter…whine about lack of motivation and looking for partners in #1k1hr. \u00a0Also, tweets funny pics from Jedi Order PR.<\/p>\n

Somebody knocks. \u00a0Fedex. \u00a0Dumps package on counter. \u00a0I have partners for #1k1hr. \u00a0Sixteen minutes in? \u00a0Phone rings. \u00a0Bleh. \u00a0I didn’t need to answer that.<\/p>\n

Score! 1400 written. \u00a0Phone rings. \u00a0Ignored. \u00a0Another round of #1k1hr. \u00a0Somebody knocks… AGAIN. \u00a0Author is getting rabid. \u00a0Schwann’s guy. \u00a0Author has to play human because she needs stuff. \u00a0Stuff obtained. \u00a0Back to #1k1hr. Only hit 800 words. \u00a0Irritation. \u00a015 minute break then back to–stupid phone rings again<\/em>–answering machine, thank…oh, crap. \u00a0I have to answer that.<\/p>\n

No…he’s not…won’t be home until…oh. \u00a0Okay. \u00a0I’ll text him.<\/em><\/p>\n

All while silently screaming.<\/p>\n

Late joining in on #1k1hr. \u00a0Managed to get 1100 anyway. \u00a0Getting anxious cuz kids due home soon. \u00a0Check phone for reply from the guy–might have to leave to meet him early…<\/p>\n

Older two kids off bus. \u00a0Tell them we might have to help Dad shovel snow and leave in a little while. \u00a0Inwardly snarling<\/i>. Kids are being\u00a0loud<\/em>. \u00a0Duct tape isn’t an acceptable form of child-rearing, I’ve been told.<\/p>\n

Text…\u00a0that’s fine. \u00a0We can meet there after work<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Oy. \u00a0Kick into overdrive. One final #1k1hr. \u00a0Forty minutes in-phone call. That’s it. \u00a0I’m ripping it out the wall.<\/p>\n

Hey, everybody. Wednesday service is on tonight… somebody came and cleared the sidewalks…<\/em><\/p>\n

Me. \u00a0Staring at the phone. \u00a0That’s what we were supposed to do.<\/p>\n

Grabbing phone. Another text. Me. Collapsing into limp puddle.<\/p>\n

One day later.<\/em><\/p>\n

Sticky note pasted to computer for the guy:\u00a0I ran off to the coffee shop to escape endless door knocking and telephone ringing. \u00a0Love, your rabid wife.<\/em><\/p>\n

**#1k1hr 1000 words in an hour.<\/p>\n

***kinda sorta written tongue in cheek but the stuff has happened, just not all in one day, except the day where I had the endless phone calls\u00a0and<\/em> the Jehovah’s Witness, Schwann’s, and Fedex guy all show up within two hours of each other.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
