{"id":32772,"date":"2013-11-12T08:00:01","date_gmt":"2013-11-12T13:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/?p=32772"},"modified":"2013-11-08T13:40:59","modified_gmt":"2013-11-08T18:40:59","slug":"sketching-stories","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/2013\/11\/sketching-stories\/","title":{"rendered":"Sketching stories"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I had this idea at the NJRW conference to take elements from my\u00a0<em>Writing Hot<\/em> workshop and devise a new sort of workshop, one on characters.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not, by nature, a plotter.<\/p>\n<p>The way I\u00a0<em>learned<\/em> plotting (my way of doing it, at least) was by doing character sketches.<\/p>\n<p>My first attempt at a character sketch came from two places, and I built on it from there.<\/p>\n<p>I was visiting Lora Leigh years ago and she mentioned how she uses pictures just to keep her characters looking different. \u00a0It seemed like a good idea&#8230;I kept making my heroines red-headed. \u00a0I like red hair. \u00a0But\u00a0<em>all<\/em> of my heroines can&#8217;t be redheads. So I started doing that, kind of using one of her templates that she&#8217;d given me for just sketching out the rough outline of a character.<\/p>\n<p>Then I was playing around with <a href=\"http:\/\/pbackwriter.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lynn Viehl<\/a>&#8216;s <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/?urp=http:\/\/www.bing.com\/search?setmkt%3Den-US%26q%3Dgoogle%2Bd&amp;pli=1&amp;authuser=0#search\/novel%20writing%20notebook%20lynn%20viehl\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Novel Writing Notebook<\/em><\/a>-for you in depth plotters? \u00a0Get this. \u00a0This may be right up your alley.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s\u00a0<em>too<\/em> in depth for me, but some aspects of the Novel Writing Notebook, and Lynn&#8217;s 3 questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Who are you?<\/li>\n<li>What do you want?<\/li>\n<li>What is the worst thing I can do to you?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Helped me figure out what I need to know about my characters, even before I start writing.<\/p>\n<p>My stories come\u00a0<em>from<\/em> my characters. \u00a0I usually know them first, and once I know them, it&#8217;s like they just want to tell me their story.<\/p>\n<p>Take for example&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Damon. (from my Kit Colbana books).<\/p>\n<p>The rough beginning of book 1, titled\u00a0<em>dead men tell no tales,\u00a0<\/em>sat on my hard drive for over a\u00a0<em>year<\/em>. \u00a0I had about 10k of the story down. I knew what I\u00a0<em>wanted<\/em> to do. \u00a0I thought. I had a love interested for Kit. \u00a0His name was Damon. \u00a0He was a white guy, really cool, played a sidekick kinda of part and they fell\u00a0<em>madly<\/em> in love, almost from the beginning.<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That was the plan.<\/p>\n<p>And the book stalled.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t know my characters.<\/p>\n<p>Then, I was on twitter. Lightning strike came in the form of this:<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 136px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/media\/rm2056693504\/nm0425005?ref_=nmmi_mi_all_sf_10\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"Dwayne Johnson, IMDB\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ia.media-imdb.com\/images\/M\/MV5BMjIyNjI0MzAxMV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNjc0NjU1OQ%40%40._V1_.jpg?resize=136%2C204\" width=\"136\" height=\"204\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Damon Johnson, Image courtesy of IMDB<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Dwayne Johnson. \u00a0He was on twitter and <em>I think<\/em> what did it was the way\u00a0he&#8217;d been chatting with some of his fans. \u00a0I&#8217;d been thinking about that book&#8211;<em>again<\/em>&#8211;and he said something to a fan, referring jokingly to himself,\u00a0<em>He&#8217;s an asshole<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a weird way a writer can get a lightning strike.<\/p>\n<p>But I went back and looked at the book. \u00a0Then I hit the internet and looked at some pictures of Dwayne Johnson.<\/p>\n<p>Thought about my character Damon some more.<\/p>\n<p>Thought about Kit.<\/p>\n<p>Okay.<\/p>\n<p><em>Who are you? \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Well. Damon&#8217;s an ass.<\/p>\n<p><em>What do you want? \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If you want to know that, you have to read the book.<\/p>\n<p><em>What&#8217;s the worst thing I can do you&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Again, read the book. \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p>Then I flipped those Qs around, put Damon in the equation&#8230;as I was starting to see him\u00a0<em>now<\/em>, and asked Kit those questions. \u00a0A whole new story came into view, and more questions.<\/p>\n<p>In the end, what I had was the story. \u00a0I had Blade Song and it was written within a week.<\/p>\n<p>The questions I had weren&#8217;t really for Damon so much, not this early in the series, but I did need to know more about him. \u00a0Initially, the way I&#8217;d written him was all wrong. \u00a0He wasn&#8217;t laid-back and easy-going. \u00a0He was, in short, an asshole. \u00a0I didn&#8217;t know, exactly, what he wanted, although half through book 1, I figured it out.<\/p>\n<p>But as I was making notes and writing in a frenzy, I learned who Kit was. I What she wanted is too complicated to explain in one sentence, but she has a mission and she has goals and the story evolves from there.<\/p>\n<p>Although more often than not, my notes for characters end up on pinterest, or scattered inside my head, the basically boil down to something like this&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<table cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td bgcolor=\"white\" width=\"304\" height=\"250\">\n<table width=\"100%\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<div>\n<p>Character image (use a blank area to add your character image&#8230;keep in mind, images are copyrighted. \u00a0I make online sketches, use private boards on pinterest or buy magazines and cut things out)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Name<\/p>\n<p>Age<\/p>\n<p>Height<\/p>\n<p>Weight<\/p>\n<p>Build<\/p>\n<p>Eye &amp; Hair color<\/p>\n<p>Occupation<\/p>\n<p>Education<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hometown<\/p>\n<p>Currently resides<\/p>\n<p>Likes<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Dislikes<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hobbies<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Who\u00a0<i>is<\/i>\u00a0s\/he? (Note, this isn&#8217;t about her name&#8230; but <i>who<\/i>\u00a0she is&#8230; is she writer, a lost soul, an artist, a scared kid&#8230;who is she on the inside. \u00a0Like me, I&#8217;m a mom, a wife, a daughter, a sister, a reader, a writer, a child of God, a brat and a troublemaker)<\/p>\n<p>Mission? (a reason or being here?)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Any enemies?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>What does s\/he want?
