{"id":32624,"date":"2013-09-29T08:00:45","date_gmt":"2013-09-29T12:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/?p=32624"},"modified":"2013-09-28T16:01:21","modified_gmt":"2013-09-28T20:01:21","slug":"a-thought-on-plagiarism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/2013\/09\/a-thought-on-plagiarism\/","title":{"rendered":"A thought on plagiarism&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was talking with Mary Elizabeth-one of the two fanfic authors involved in the Stahl mess (<a title=\"The crazy that comes with plagiarism scandals\" href=\"http:\/\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/2013\/09\/the-crazy-that-comes-with-plagiarism-scandals\/\"><em>read about it here<\/em><\/a>). \u00a0She made a comment that she wasn&#8217;t mad, more disappointed.<\/p>\n<p>I felt the same way when I was plagiarized. \u00a0I only got\u00a0<em>mad<\/em> when she started trying to throw guilt trips at me&#8211;she kept trying to find other places to sneak the works up, defending herself to those who would listen and when I told her that if the works\u00a0<em>weren&#8217;t<\/em> all removed and if they didn&#8217;t\u00a0<em>stay<\/em> down, I&#8217;d seek legal action&#8211;she laid a sob story at my feet about her kids and their deadbeat dad.<\/p>\n<p><i>That<\/i> is when I got mad.<\/p>\n<p>Before that? \u00a0I was disappointed, irritated&#8230;bizarrely enough, I almost pitied her botched attempts at rewriting my Grimm books. \u00a0I had Greta &amp; Rip-she changed them to Gretta and Ryp. \u00a0I had Will, she changed him to Wyll. \u00a0Ella (as in CINDERELLA&#8230;) became\u00a0<em>CINDY<\/em> for pete&#8217;s sake. \u00a0And the writing, while the scenes, the stories, the layout, the set-up, the\u00a0<em>plot,\u00a0<\/em>all of it was mine&#8230; she couldn&#8217;t recreate my story. \u00a0I&#8217;m not trying to be unkind, but the writing, plain and simple, was a botched mess. \u00a0It was the efforts, in my opinion, of somebody who just can&#8217;t write&#8230; or create the idea&#8230; so she tried to take the short cut and steal somebody else&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not the same.<\/p>\n<p>Know how I first started writing?<\/p>\n<p>It was in 3rd or 4th grade. \u00a0I had read a comic book. \u00a0I loved it. \u00a0But the ending? Not so much.<\/p>\n<p>Below is the opening to a speech I gave at the Washington Area Romance Writers Retreat.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I have a confession to make.<\/p>\n<p>One of the first stories I ever wrote\u2026I think I plagiarized.\u00a0 Now, you\u2019ll have to give me a little bit of leeway here, because I was in third or fourth grade.\u00a0 I\u2019d been reading this really amazing comic book\u2014I <i>think<\/i> it was the Fantastic Four, and it was just so awesome that I thought for sure, I could do something equally awesome.<\/p>\n<p>The problem was, as cool as the story was, it had a lousy ending. I didn\u2019t like it.\u00a0 I don\u2019t remember why.\u00a0 I just know I was going to make it <i>better<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t make it better, though, and for some reason, it wasn\u2019t as awesome as I thought it would be.<\/p>\n<p>I was writing a story, yeah.<\/p>\n<p>But it wasn\u2019t <i>my<\/i> story.\u00a0 It\u2019s not the same, when the words aren\u2019t your own. \u00a0When the story isn\u2019t your own. I don\u2019t think I even finished it. The magic just wasn\u2019t there.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Yep. \u00a0I started out by trying to recreate somebody else&#8217;s words. \u00a0Like I said, I was in 3rd or 4th grade, and I knew right away it wasn&#8217;t working out. \u00a0It&#8217;s been thirty years since that botched up mess of a story and I still remember my disappointment in it.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t even know if I finished it. \u00a0It just&#8230;wasn&#8217;t worth it.
