I know I’m not the only who has noticed the theme with plagiarism scandals.<\/p>\n

I think author Courtney Milan has spoken about this, but I can’t remember where or when and a search didn’t show anything. \u00a0But the cycle is kinda obvious by now.<\/p>\n

First there is\u00a0denial<\/em>…<\/p>\n

I didn’t do it.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Then there are cries of bullying.<\/p>\n

I’m the victim! \u00a0Why are you so mean!<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Then we start hearing from the plagiarist’s fanbase.<\/p>\n

Leave her alone! \u00a0There’s no proof. \u00a0You’re just jealous\/mean\/bullies\/. \u00a0You’re being sued for libel\/slander\/cyberbullying…blah blah blah…<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Never mind that truth is kinda the absolute defense against\u00a0libel<\/em> and it has to be\u00a0libel<\/em>. Remember your Spiderman. \u00a0Slander is spoken. \u00a0And how is it bullying to speak up about the truth? \u00a0FYI, for the record, I am outright\u00a0against<\/em> anybody who tells somebody to harm themselves, drop dead, etc. \u00a0If that’s anybody’s version of speaking up for the truth, find a better way.<\/p>\n

But speaking up for the truth isn’t bullying. \u00a0Notifying the author, notifying e-tailers\u00a0isn’t<\/em> bullying.<\/p>\n

There are other steps in the cycle.<\/p>\n

Books will disappear.<\/p>\n

The author often fades away, going silent. \u00a0Websites die. \u00a0Sometimes, the ‘writer’ makes excuse. \u00a0Depression (I’m depressed, I haven’t plagiarized anybody). \u00a0A husband is leaving, somebody is cheating… it’s always\u00a0somebody else’s fault<\/em>. \u00a0It’s never just the fact that wannabe writer couldn’t come up with their own ideas so they stole somebody else’s.<\/p>\n

The only except to this rule was Kay Manning<\/a>. \u00a0She openly\u00a0admitted<\/em> what she’d done wrong, she confessed, without exception, and she\u00a0apologized<\/em> without excuses. \u00a0It was the first time in the 10 years I’ve been published and more plagiarism scandals than I can recall. \u00a0Because of that, I’ll remember her name…and if she publishes again, I may give her a second chance.<\/p>\n

The latest scandal is about a fricking USA Today best seller, Shey Stahl. \u00a0Apparently her books did so well, they landed her an agent and a contract with Simon & Schuster<\/del>. (ETA on 9\/30… there have been numerous comments about this but no hard data, so I’m srtiking it. More info here<\/a>.) But…it might be\/allegedly\/blah blah blah… that those books aren’t hers. \u00a0None of them are for sale anymore and it looks like she is holding true to the pattern.<\/p>\n

I didn’t steal them. \u00a0They are mine. \u00a0People are being mean to me. \u00a0They are jealous.<\/em><\/p>\n

And the chorus of her fans rise high…we’re here. \u00a0We’ll support you<\/em>.<\/p>\n

It’s predictable.<\/p>\n

Already, she’s gone silent. \u00a0FB page is gone, website is being redone. \u00a0More ‘similarities’ are cropping up with other fanfic pieces.<\/p>\n

In a year or so, will I remember Stahl’s name? \u00a0Unlikely. If I do, it will just be that she involved in another scandal…she was another wannabe who wanted to write, but couldn’t. \u00a0Maybe one who\u00a0could<\/em> have learned how, if she would have invested the time to learn her voice. \u00a0Instead, she stole somebody else’s….allegedly<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Here’s the deal.<\/p>\n

Plagiarism<\/em> is wrong.<\/p>\n

She\u2019s wearing a tight blue shirt and a black pencils skirt. Her high-heels tap on the wood as she descends down the steps. Her hair is an unnatural red color, but it\u2019s seamlessly curled and styled. And when she smiles, I feel Mom almost cringe.<\/p>\n

Alice\u2019s mom looks nothing like my mom.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou must be Renee,\u201d the lady with the deep-red hair says, offering her hand.<\/p>\n

Mom flattens her curly hair before shaking Mrs. Cullen\u2019s hand. \u201cYes, and your name?\u201d Mom asks kindly.<\/p>\n

She was wearing jean shorts and a red tank top. Her hair was that same rich color as Ivey\u2019s, the color of the canyons with lighter highlights throughout.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou must be Kathy,\u201d the lady said, offering her hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, and your name?\u201d Mom asked kindly.<\/p>\n

There are numerous passages in the book where lines like this were found, entire scenes blocked out, just like this.\u00a0And this isn’t the\u00a0first<\/em> or\u00a0only<\/em> instance<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This is nuts.<\/p>\n

What really bugs me is how many fans rush to support her. \u00a0You poor thing. \u00a0They are just jealous.<\/em><\/p>\n

Part of me gets it, in a weird way. \u00a0They love these stories, they invested time and money and they want more…the problem is what they\u00a0want<\/em> is more\u00a0lies<\/em> and they can’t see that. \u00a0So they continue to defend.<\/p>\n

It’s…bothersome, though, how they continue to refuse the evidence that is so plainly there.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Plagiarism is a matter of ethics, and\u00a0can<\/em> be a criminal matter, and it’s like these people don’t care that they are defending a person who has absolutely no writing ethics, at all. \u00a0Would they go on the attack if somebody stole one of her\u00a0<\/i>stories? \u00a0Is it a blind defense of her? \u00a0That fanaticism is…well. \u00a0Worrisome. To blindly follow\/love anybody means you refuse to see their flaws. \u00a0This is a pretty huge flaw.<\/p>\n

One thing that did jump out at me was one of these gems, tossed out by one defending Stahl. As far as I’m concerned, she has no defense, but as a mom, and a writer…I do want to address it.<\/p>\n

How can you do this<\/em> (paraphrasing here… this was a line from her FB page, gone now, but I won’t highlight the user’s name)\u00a0don’t you realize these books are her babies????<\/em><\/p>\n

First. \u00a0BOOKS ARE NOT BABIES.<\/p>\n

I carried my babies for 9 months. \u00a0I lost one child. \u00a0It devastated me.<\/p>\n

I would happily jump in front of a bullet, a speeding train or a madman with a knife for one of my children.<\/p>\n

For a book? \u00a0I’d\u00a0throw\u00a0<\/em>my books in front of that bullet, that train, that madman.<\/p>\n

I’ve happily\u00a0thrown<\/em> my manuscripts at a wall, abandoned them, starved them. \u00a0I’d never do that to a child.<\/p>\n

A book is a creation that\u00a0seems<\/em> to take on its own life. \u00a0But it’s\u00a0not<\/em> a living creature that requires love, nurturing, protection, shelter.<\/p>\n

Get it right, people. \u00a0BOOKS AREN’T BABIES. \u00a0I think it was Tessa Dare that led a twitter hashtag party one year about all things you do with babies that you don’t do with books…books don’t wear diapers. \u00a0Books don’t cry…etc, etc.<\/p>\n

Books don’t pee on you, poop on you, scream at you, yell at you, cry on you, ask why nobody likes them, ask you when they can drive, ask for an allowance, they won’t grow up and leave you, come back and hug you on the first day of school.<\/p>\n

BOOKS AREN’T BABIES.<\/p>\n

If I had to choose between writing and my children, my children will win. \u00a0Every damn time.<\/p>\n

Books are important and they are creative works that come from inside and yes, they can rip you apart.<\/p>\n

You know what\u00a0really<\/em> rips you apart?<\/p>\n

When somebody steals those words and tries to claim them for their own.\u00a0That is why people are up in arms over the Stahl\/Dusty\/Sarah<\/a>\/Mary Elizabeth<\/a>\u00a0mess. \u00a0Because a lot of us, writers and readers, get that Sarah and Mary Elizabeth invested time and heart into creating a story…and Stahl went and tried to claim it as her own. \u00a0It isn’t\u00a0her<\/em> baby. \u00a0It’s\u00a0their<\/em> story-and she stole it…allegedly<\/em>.<\/p>\n

I know how this feels. \u00a0I’ve been there<\/a>. \u00a0Stahl, and everybody defending her, have absolutely no clue what it’s like.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
