I kinda loved the hero in this one. \u00a0He’s a gruff, sexy bastard. \u00a0I adored him. As with the rest of the books in this series, it totally works fine as a standalone.<\/p>\n

\u201cFigured it would be better if you had him a little stuck,\u201d Tucker said as Vaughnne stared at the unmoving truck.\u00a0 \u201cAway from the house and all.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis isn\u2019t going to help his frame of mind any,\u201d she said sourly as she threw the car into drive. \u201cDeal with the others. Hold them. As long as you can.\u201d<\/p>\n

He canted his head to the side. \u201cWell, that might be problematic. If I\u2019m here, I can hold them forever and that won\u2019t happen. I\u2019ll give you a headstart though.\u201d<\/p>\n

As she gunned the engine, Tucker eased back into the shadows. For a big, red-haired bastard, he actually did a better job at avoiding notice than she would have expected.<\/p>\n

She slammed on the brakes just as Gus had managed to shove up the hood of his truck, glaring at it like that would magically fix it.<\/p>\n

She pulled out her ID and slammed it down next to him. \u201cNow if I had to pick a movie to go with this moment, I\u2019d go with Terminator,\u201d she said as his gaze flicked to the ID and then up to her face. She saw him bracing, preparing to move. \u201cThe line would be\u2026Come with me if you want to live<\/i>.\u201d<\/p>\n

He backed away and she saw the gun in his hands. Double-handed grip, braced and ready, like he could stand there forever. So fast. He was so damn fast. Yet again, she had to wonder, just who in the hell<\/i> was he\u2026and what in the hell<\/i> had he done before he gave up that life to go on the run with that kid?\u00a0 A kid he\u2019d die to protect. Always so ready to fight, she thought. To defend.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t care who you are,\u201d he said quietly. \u201cGet away. Give me your keys, or I\u2019m going to shoot.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can shoot me.\u201d She held his gaze. \u201cBut it won\u2019t stop the ones who are chasing you. You know that. And if you shoot me, instead of just running from them<\/i>, you\u2019re running from the FBI, too.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cUnless I kill you, they won\u2019t be too worried about me,\u201d he said, shrugging. \u201cI don\u2019t need to kill you, just slow you down.\u201d<\/p>\n

She smiled at him. \u201cGus, unless you kill<\/i> me, you won\u2019t stop me. I\u2019ll track you down again.\u201d<\/p>\n

Somebody shouted and she slid a look past him, watched as the two men who\u2019d broken into his house came boiling out on the porch. Gus swung around, shifting his attention between her and the house, his grip on that weapon all too competent, all too ready.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey broke into your house ten minutes ago. I don\u2019t think they are here to talk about baseball or discuss Alex\u2019s homeschooling life.\u201d<\/p>\n
