They\u2019d been like a complete unit, the two of them. He calmed her thoughts and let her see beyond what her gift wanted to show her. And she let him use his unusual ability in a way he wouldn\u2019t have been able to use it otherwise. His odd gifts and weird insights would have just been annoyances in any other job, never complete enough to serve any true function.<\/p>\n

It was like they\u2019d been designed to complete each other.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt went deeper than it should have sometimes,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

His face was blank. But a muscle jerked in his jaw as he said it.<\/p>\n

That knot in her gut tightened. \u201cI don\u2019t want to hear this, Caleb.\u00a0I<\/i>\u00a0was never hurt the way you think,\u201d she snapped. Memories of that horrid dream tried to creep out of the depths of her mind, but she shoved them back.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not just about that,\u201d he said gently. \u201cIt\u2019s everything. I\u2019d be working with another agent and I\u2019d get glimmers from you. I could be on the other side of the country and I\u2019d know when you were picking up on a perp, Destin. It went too deep.\u201d<\/p>\n

That knot was painful now.<\/p>\n

He\u2019d told her that. Time and again, when he\u2019d tried to get her to use some bit of control.<\/p>\n

Averting her gaze, she stared out the window at the clear blue sky. \u201cIt\u2019s not going to be a problem anymore,\u201d she said quietly. \u201cI can control it now. You\u2019re not picking up like that anymore, right?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, I\u2019m not. And just as much of that was my failing. I should have worked harder to lock things down\u2014I could have built better walls. I\u2019m\u00a0not<\/i>\u00a0blaming you for what was going on with us. We couldn\u2019t have been prepared for how tight we connected.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay.\u201d She nodded slowly and then looked back at him. \u201cSo why are we having this talk?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you understand what I\u2019m saying now?\u201d he asked. \u201cI tried to explain this before and you never listened.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI couldn\u2019t,\u201d she said flatly. \u201cListening would have required I look past how I did things, how I lived my life, and I wasn\u2019t able to do that until I destroyed things. People. Myself. An innocent life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Compassionate eyes watched her. \u201cYou couldn\u2019t have known that was going to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, bullshit,\u201d she snapped, shoving back from the table. \u201cI\u00a0should<\/i>\u00a0have known it could happen. You warned me all the time that jumping feet first was going to cause me problems.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd if it had caused you problems, you would have been fine with it,\u201d he interjected. \u201cYou didn\u2019t expect somebody else to pay for it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSomebody did. Somebody paid with their life,\u201d she said quietly. \u201cNow I have to live with that.\u201d She covered her face with her hands, remembered that day. \u201cI have to live with that every day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence filled the air. How could silence be so loud? It crowded the room until she wanted to scream, just to end it.<\/p>\n

Swallowing, she lowered her hands and met his gaze. \u201cIf this little chat is to see if I\u2019ve gotten my head on straight, I have. I don\u2019t know where you\u2019re going with this, if you think we should try again or what. We can\u2019t think about that now, though. There\u2019s a job\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

Caleb reached for the hem of his shirt and pulled it off.<\/p>\n
