So I made it through the character battle.<\/p>\n

Here’s a Damon…um, out-take maybe? \u00a0It’s not a scene that was in a book, but it happened shortly after Kit was grabbed in Night Blade.<\/p>\n

My body ached.\u00a0 I wish I could blame the workout.\u00a0 I\u2019d been going at it for close two hours now and wasn\u2019t even close to done.\u00a0 Oughta give Chang a call.\u00a0 He was the only one I could think who could maybe give me the beating I probably needed.<\/p>\n

Why the fuck had I done?<\/p>\n

The look on her face.\u00a0 Something was wrong.\u00a0 I knew there was.\u00a0 Magic\u2026under that cloying, awful scent of another man on her, there had been the scent of magic.\u00a0 It had been there for a few days.\u00a0 Kit usually smelled of magic\u2014there were charms all over her office, but after she was gone a few hours, it started to fade.\u00a0 But it wasn\u2019t like this.<\/p>\n

The door opened.\u00a0 \u201cGet out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another snarl answered me.<\/p>\n

I bit back a roar. Doyle.<\/p>\n

Another person in my life who\u2019d been acting like his tail had been stepped on.\u00a0 I was tempted to get up and kick his<\/i> ass, but not in the mood I was in.<\/p>\n

He wouldn\u2019t back down and I didn\u2019t want to hurt him.<\/p>\n

A flash of orange and black appeared in the corner of my eye.\u00a0 He was back in his tiger form.\u00a0 Doyle often shifted to cat when he was edgy.<\/p>\n

As much as I didn\u2019t want to worry about anybody else, it was my responsibility now, one I couldn\u2019t put off just because I didn\u2019t want to mess with it.<\/p>\n

How long had he been like that?\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know.\u00a0 Son of a bitch<\/i>.\u00a0 Lowering the heavy bar, I sat up.\u00a0 Sweat stung my eyes as I stared at him.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t want to worry about Doyle.\u00a0 Problems in the clan.<\/p>\n

Kit\u2026<\/i><\/p>\n

Following me.\u00a0 My hands closed into fists while I stared at the floor.\u00a0 She\u2019d been following me.<\/p>\n

I can\u2019t <\/i>talk<\/i> about it. Let me work it\u2026 I\u2019ll explain.<\/i> I\u2019d thought this through a thousand times, it seemed over the past few days, but this time, those words seemed to hit different.\u00a0 Can\u2019t<\/i> talk.\u00a0 Can\u2019t.<\/i><\/p>\n

Can\u2019t talk\u2026not won\u2019t.\u00a0 Can\u2019t<\/i>.<\/p>\n

That stink of magic that clung to her.<\/p>\n

\u201cSon of a bitch<\/i>!\u201d I stood up and spun around.\u00a0 Fury blinded me and I grabbed the bottom of the weight bench, upending it as the realization blasted me.<\/p>\n

Had to get dressed. Had to\u2014<\/p>\n

A fist pounded on the door.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot now!\u201d<\/p>\n

The door opened.\u00a0 I spun around, rage burning in me, tightening my muscles in warning.\u00a0 \u201cI said\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

Tyson, one of the new cats I\u2019d accepted into the clan, stood there, his head bowed.\u00a0 \u201cAlpha, forgive me.\u00a0 But I think you need to speak with this wolf.\u201d<\/p>\n

The huge man who shouldered past him had to duck his head to come into my rooms.\u00a0 He wasn\u2019t a stranger.\u00a0 I hadn\u2019t ever met him until Kit had introduced us, though.\u00a0 I\u2019d thought I knew most of the wolves in the area\u2014at least those who\u2019d present a threat.<\/p>\n

Goliath was a hell of a mother-fucking threat.<\/p>\n

Right now, the look on his ugly mug was one that promised a bloody, painful death.<\/p>\n

His eyes were pale and blue as they caught mine.\u00a0 \u201cYou seen Kit?\u201d he demanded.<\/p>\n

I stilled. My heart slammed hard against my ribs and the cat inside me went still.\u00a0 \u201cA few days ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n

Disappeared\u2014<\/i><\/p>\n

For a second, the word didn\u2019t connect.<\/p>\n

Then, as the strength drained out of me, I stumbled, fell back against the wall, staring at the floor.\u00a0 She ran\u2026she just ran.<\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cYou going to stand there looking some lost little kitten?\u201d<\/p>\n

Jerking my head, I watched as Goliath prowled closer, the floor vibrating under each heavy step.\u00a0 His eyes narrowed in on my face and the hair on the back of my neck stood on end.<\/p>\n

\u201cJustin and Colleen been throwing\u00a0 spells.\u00a0 There\u2019s been a witch at her place\u2026and not a good one.\u00a0 Coll felt a lot of fear, panic.\u201d\u00a0 He leaned down, his nose just an inch away.\u00a0 Slowly, the strength came back as what he was saying made sense.\u00a0 Strength, and fury.\u00a0 Somebody was going to die.\u00a0 Slowly.\u00a0 I\u2019d rip them limb from limb.\u00a0 \u201cHer trail just disappeared.\u00a0 Now if that brain of yours is working, cat, you already know what that means.\u00a0 Somebody grabbed her.\u201d<\/p>\n

I shoved him back as Doyle\u2019s roar echoed through the room.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s over\u2026Good-bye, Kit<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Those were the last words I\u2019d said to her.<\/p>\n
