Part of my FBI Psychics series…<\/em><\/p>\n

Even before he turned his head and saw her, he knew.\u00a0 Some part of him did, at least.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t even know if he could claim it was any sort of psychic knowledge.\u00a0\u00a0 Certain things, people didn\u2019t need<\/i> true psychic skill to know\u2014just instinct\u2014and this was probably every bit as much as instinct as anything else.\u00a0 The instinct that trouble was coming his way.<\/p>\n

Trouble\u2026five feet, nine inches of trouble and most of it was leg.\u00a0 Black hair was pulled back in a braid so tight, he wouldn\u2019t have known it was curly.\u00a0 Except he had spent many, many hours with his hands fisted in those curls.\u00a0 She hated them\u2026he\u2019d always loved them.\u00a0 Her eyes, a deep, strange shade of blue-violet, so much darker than his own eyes, were hidden by sunglasses and he could only imagine the derision he\u2019d see there.\u00a0 And it would be there.\u00a0 He knew it just by the sight of the slight sneer on her pretty face.<\/p>\n

Mica Greer never had much cared for psychics.\u00a0 Strange, considering she was <\/i>one.\u00a0 Or maybe not so strange, he supposed.\u00a0 Denial wasn\u2019t just a river in Egypt and all that.<\/p>\n

Mica\u2019s gift, like his own, had been unstable.\u00a0 Unlike him, she hadn\u2019t learned to stabilize it through practice alone.\u00a0 She\u2019d needed a partner, and she\u2019d turned out to make a damn good anchor.\u00a0 For a while, the two of them had worked together in training.\u00a0 Her gift had grown, bloomed\u2026as had some crazy thing between them.<\/p>\n

Then she\u2019d decided she didn\u2019t want all the \u2018crazy shit\u2019 in her life.<\/p>\n

She pulled out.\u00a0 Not just out of the unit, but out of the FBI, altogether.<\/p>\n

And from him\u2014<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t go there,<\/i> he thought.\u00a0 Blowing out a breath, he shifted his attention back to the ocean, trying to reach for some inner peace.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t going to come, though, and he knew it.\u00a0 If she was here, on top of the insane coming at him, then it was for a reason.<\/p>\n

I can always pretend she\u2019s here because after all this time, she realizes she\u2019s still in love with me<\/i>.\u00a0 He laughed deprecatingly.\u00a0 Yeah, like that was going to happen.\u00a0 Fifteen years\u2026fifteen fucking years.\u00a0 How had those years slipped away from him like that?<\/p>\n

She came to a stop next to him, standing almost shoulder to shoulder with him.\u00a0 He waited for her to say something, but it didn\u2019t happen.\u00a0 Of course, he\u2019d also waited for her to come back to him\u2026that hadn\u2019t happened, either.\u00a0 After a while, he\u2019d stopped waiting.\u00a0 But he\u2019d never stopped wishing.\u00a0 Never stopping wanting, either.\u00a0 He\u2019d moved on, but he hadn\u2019t forgotten.<\/p>\n

The waves crashed against the sand just a few inches from his feet and he stooped down, raked his fingers through the wet, watched as it filled back up in eddies and swirls before another wave came.\u00a0 Mica remained silent at his back.<\/p>\n

He could feel her turmoil, if he let himself.\u00a0 Even without lowering his shields.\u00a0 All he had to do was concentrate\u2026and there.<\/p>\n

There it was.\u00a0 She didn\u2019t want to be here, she worried about whether or not his gift had gotten stronger, whether or not he could pick anything up from her and damn it\u2014why did he\u2026<\/i><\/p>\n

He smiled a little as her thoughts tumbled to a stop, almost like she\u2019d sensed him.\u00a0 \u201cYou never did learn to stop projecting so loudly,\u201d he said softly.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou never did learn to mind your own business,\u201d she snapped.<\/p>\n

He shrugged.\u00a0 \u201cI can\u2019t help that I hear people shouting at me from the next room.\u00a0 You don\u2019t like it\u2026\u201d He slanted a look at her through his lashes.\u00a0 \u201cDon\u2019t shout.\u00a0 You can tone your thoughts down.\u00a0 You learned how.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yeah, she\u2019d learned how.\u00a0 But back then, he hadn\u2019t been quite as good at picking up random thoughts, or even direct thoughts.\u00a0 Not that Colby was going to point that out to her.<\/p>\n

Mica curled her lip at him.\u00a0 He hated that he still found that so fucking appealing, hated that he wanted to reach up and tumble her down into the sand next to him and strip her naked.\u00a0 So what if doing the dirty in the sand got grit in sensitive places?\u00a0 The ocean was right there if they wanted to clean up after.\u00a0 And his house wasn\u2019t too far away.<\/p>\n

It was a strong enough impulse that he could even see himself doing just that and somehow, he doubted she\u2019d resist him if he gave it a try.\u00a0 Her breathing kicked up as she stared at him.\u00a0 No.\u00a0 She wouldn\u2019t resist.\u00a0 Not at all.<\/p>\n

With a heated curse, he tore his eyes away.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhatever you want, Mica, I can\u2019t help you.\u00a0 Go away.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t know what I want.\u201d<\/p>\n

He thought of the blood-splattered images, of terror, and death.\u00a0 The fear, the darkness that hung over him a cloud.\u00a0 \u201cI know enough,\u201d he said softly.<\/p>\n

A shadow fell across him and he braced himself as she crouched down beside him.\u00a0 She was still a few inches away, but closer\u2026damn it, too close.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re not with the unit anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d He continued to play with the sand.\u00a0 Better to do that than reach for her, he decided.\u00a0 And he was so damn tempted to reach.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince when?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAlmost two years ago.\u201d\u00a0 Okay, playing with the sand wasn\u2019t going to cut it if she was going to sit there and chit-chat.\u00a0 He swished his hand through the next wave to get the grit off and rose.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou aren\u2019t here to chat about old times, what I\u2019ve been up to in the past fifteen years.\u201d\u00a0 Ever since you walked out on us<\/i>.\u00a0 He kept that last bit trapped behind his teeth.\u00a0 It didn\u2019t matter anymore\u2014they<\/i> didn\u2019t matter because they <\/i>didn\u2019t exist.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019ve already told you that I can\u2019t help you with whatever the trouble is.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t know that,\u201d she bit off.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah.\u00a0 I do.\u00a0 Because I won\u2019t<\/i>.\u201d\u00a0 He went to push past her\u2014he had to get away from her.\u00a0 Had to get away from here.<\/p>\n

But Mica wasn\u2019t to going to let it go that easily.\u00a0 She caught his arm and that touch almost froze him.\u00a0 Her bare hand on his arm\u2014the shock rippled through him.\u00a0 Memories raged.\u00a0 Their<\/i> memories.\u00a0 Not just his.\u00a0 Blood roared in his ears and a fog of need and want and a love she\u2019d walked away from, it was rose inside him\u2026for the briefest moment, it drowned out everything.<\/p>\n

It faded too soon and now, it wasn\u2019t memories that blinded him.<\/p>\n

It was a bloodless massacre.<\/p>\n
