Going with BROKEN, one of my older titles…<\/p>\n

\"broken\"<\/a><\/p>\n

He opened the door\u2014<\/p>\n

And stopped dead in his tracks as somebody all but fell into his arms.\u00a0 Somebody\u2026a woman.\u00a0 And not<\/span><\/i> Theresa.<\/p>\n

He caught her just above her elbows, automatically steadying her.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d she said, her voice soft and low.<\/p>\n

Then she lifted her face and Quinn found himself gazing into the biggest, brownest eyes he\u2019d ever seen in his life.\u00a0 Feeling a little dazed, he studied her face while she stammered out another apology.<\/p>\n

Quinn barely heard it.<\/p>\n

He was too busy staring at her mouth.\u00a0 A very pretty mouth, a cupid\u2019s bow mouth slicked with deep, vibrant red.\u00a0 Under his hands, he could feel silken smooth skin and unable to resist, he stroked a thumb along her inner arm.<\/p>\n

Her skin was soft, soft and warm.\u00a0 He was also pretty sure she had the creamiest, most flawless skin imaginable.\u00a0 Her shoulder-length hair was a shade caught between blonde and brown, nondescript, but for some reason, he found himself thinking about tangling his fingers in that hair and holding her head still while he kissed that red-slicked mouth.<\/p>\n

Well, hello<\/span><\/i>\u2026he could all but feet his libido kicking up as he stared at that mouth.\u00a0 Every last one of his senses tuned in on her\u2014<\/p>\n

The way she looked\u2026sex and sin.<\/p>\n

The way she smelled\u2026sex and sin.<\/p>\n

The way she sounded\u2026sex and sin.<\/p>\n

The way she felt\u2026the way she might taste.\u00a0 Sex and sin. He knew it without a doubt.\u00a0 She\u2019d taste like sex and sin.<\/p>\n

His mouth was all but watering.<\/p>\n

\u201cAhhh\u2026excuse me,\u201d she said, tugging against his light hold.<\/p>\n

\u201cUh\u2026yeah.\u201d\u00a0 He uncurled his fingers and let go, although he hated every second of it.<\/p>\n

She immediately backed away, putting a good five feet in between them and eying him nervously.\u00a0 In that moment, he was acutely aware of the fact that he hadn\u2019t bothered shaving that morning, or the morning before.\u00a0 He was also acutely aware of the wrinkled state of his gray T-shirt and the worn jeans he wore.\u00a0 He hadn\u2019t gotten into the habit of wearing the unofficial uniform worn by most of the guys who worked for Gearing, but he\u2019d swapped out the black T-shirt that read Bond Enforcement<\/span><\/i> for a plain one. Wearing those particular shirts outside of work had ended up causing him a headache or two so when he remembered, he changed out of them before leaving the office.<\/p>\n

She continued to stare at him, her face expressionless and her eyes measuring.\u00a0 She might have just continued to stare at him indefinitely if Theresa hadn\u2019t come bustling down the hall.\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cQuinn?\u201d<\/p>\n

Tearing his eyes away from the unknown woman, he smiled at his landlord.\u00a0 It no longer seemed so weird to smile at somebody\u2014as in he didn\u2019t worry his face might crack if he wasn\u2019t careful.\u00a0 Still, the smile on his face did feel odd.\u00a0 \u201cHey, Theresa.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know you had company.\u201d<\/p>\n

She beamed at him.\u00a0 \u201cThis isn\u2019t company.\u00a0 This is your new neighbor.\u00a0 She just moved in to the upstairs apartment. Sara\u2026I\u2019d like you to meet Quinn Rafferty.\u00a0 Quinn, this is Sara Davis.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sara.<\/p>\n

Neighbor.<\/p>\n

Staring into Sara\u2019s dark brown eyes, his heart sank just a little.\u00a0 Great.<\/p>\n

Some people collected books.<\/p>\n

Some people collected knickknacks.<\/p>\n

Some people collected coins.<\/p>\n

Theresa collected lost souls, as evidenced by the fact that he was living in her basement after she\u2019d charmed him into changing her tire outside Dierburg\u2019s a few months earlier.<\/p>\n

The last woman to stay in that apartment had ended up being a battered woman hiding out from her ex.\u00a0 Before that, it had been a girl who\u2019d been all of nineteen, with two kids and a third on the way.\u00a0\u00a0 When that one had left, she\u2019d ended up stealing from Theresa and skipping out on the piddling amount of rent that Theresa had coming.<\/p>\n

If Sara Davis was living in Theresa\u2019s upstairs apartment, that made her pretty much off limits.\u00a0 It didn\u2019t matter that his dormant sex drive was all of sudden flaring up on him.<\/p>\n

The last thing Quinn needed to be around was another lost soul, not when he still struggled to find his own.
