The Bookpushers were with me with me when I had the idea for\u00a0WRECKED<\/strong>. \u00a0They blogged<\/em><\/a> their thoughts on the book. \u00a0They liked it. \u00a0\ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

And now… a PSA.<\/p>\n

Apparently there’s a big petition on returning books to Amazon<\/a>. \u00a0Some authors don’t like it. Some authors don’t like that you can leave negative reviews and some don’t like the fact that the earth is round and that the moon is\u00a0not<\/em> made of green cheese, either.<\/p>\n

Yes, some people will abuse that system. \u00a0This is the fact of life when you’re doing business with the public.<\/p>\n

The bottom line is sometimes you buy a book twice.<\/p>\n

Sometimes you buy a book and you go to read and the formatting\u00a0sucks<\/em>…I handled the formatting on the first 2-3 selfpubbed books and while it’s pretty decent for a newbie, it’s not as good as my later stuff, which I finally paid somebody to do.<\/p>\n

Some people buy a book thinking it’s a romance and it turns out it has terrible awful stuff like rape fantasy (yes, I’ve got one of those and I’ve had a few people unhappy because that sexy romance wasn’t sexy, it was filled with lurid stuff where the woman\u00a0fantasized<\/em> about being forced). That wasn’t their cuppa and they didn’t like it, which is totally okay, and they returned it.<\/p>\n

And\u00a0then<\/em> there’s really weird thing where\u00a0sometimes\u00a0<\/em>you buy\u00a0one<\/em> book and you get…oh, say…the file of another<\/a>! \u00a0No. \u00a0That can’t happen, right? \u00a0Um, guess what? It’s happened to me…twice<\/em>.\u00a0<\/em>And it wasn’t a formatting issue on my part-it was something publishers or distributors did. \u00a0The customer’s best course of action at the time was to return and repurchase.<\/p>\n

Sometimes, as much as it pains me to point it out, you just buy a book where the writer either didn’t\u00a0care<\/em> about quality, or doesn’t know what quality is. \u00a0Where they do crap like:<\/p>\n

hey look over their, there go to the market over they’re.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

or…<\/p>\n

hey! \u00a0what DO YOU MEAN i USE CAPS all WRONG!!!!!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

or<\/p>\n

HEY! \u00a0I LIKE TO EMPHASIZE SHIT!!!! AND I’LL ABUSE THE BOLD TYPE AND EXCLAMATION POINTS!!! ALL!! THROUGH!!! THE BOOK!!!!\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

or<\/p>\n

She was a pre-madonna<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

FYI… that was really fricking used\u00a0<\/em>in a book. Not prima donna. \u00a0But\u00a0pre-madonna<\/em>.<\/p>\n

other crap like:<\/p>\n

sh eopened the door and sawhim standing there. \u00a0Sohot. Sosexy. And hers. \u00a0Hewasall hers. And just hers \u00a0Sh3 just wanted him. Nthing but him. Teh neeed insde her was going t kill her<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And it’s pretty damn obvious the book didn’t even get a\u00a0read<\/em> through or a basic grammar\/spell check on Word, much less finding an editor who’d read it through.<\/p>\n

The above stuff\u00a0does<\/em> happen. \u00a0There’s plenty of that stuff on Amazon. \u00a0I see in excerpts, in samples that I download, etc. \u00a0It’s why I’ll only read a self-pubbed work if it’s by authors I know or somebody who comes very very <\/em>highly recommended and then I’ll take it with about five grains of salt. (I’m also saying this with a grain of salt because I’m aware\u00a0I<\/em> miss things in my self pubbed works and I’m constantly trying to think of ways to improve.)<\/p>\n

Some people can overlook and that is\u00a0fine<\/em>. Others don’t want to. \u00a0It interferes with the reading experience and if they are spending their hard-earned money, they are entitled to spend on something they will\u00a0enjoy<\/em>.<\/p>\n

So, authors? \u00a0It’s in your best interest to make sure it’s in the best possible shape for the reader. \u00a0Get the book formatted. \u00a0Hire editors. \u00a0Self-published works are\u00a0not<\/em> as likely to get the treatment that New York works get-those books get read through\u00a0multiple<\/em> times by\u00a0multiple<\/em> people, editors, multiple line editors, etc and the cost of that is\u00a0astronomical.\u00a0 \u00a0But you can definitely find a content editor and a line editor. \u00a0You can use spell and grammar check. \u00a0SmartEdit<\/a>\u00a0will cut back on the repetitive words. \u00a0You can do plenty of things to shape your work up.<\/p>\n

If your return rate is that fricking high, it oughta tell you something-you need to improve your craft. \u00a0Most<\/em> readers are looking for new authors to love…not books to return. \u00a0So be that author.<\/p>\n

Also, it’s kinda silly for anybody to argue that\u00a0you know within seven days if you’ll finish the book…<\/em>oh, silly, silly rabbit. \u00a0This?<\/em><\/p>\n

\"picture\"<\/a><\/p>\n

That’s the top half of\u00a0one<\/em> of my\u00a0print<\/em> bookshelves. The books are double-stacked. \u00a0There are books behind<\/em> the books in front. On both shelves. \u00a0I don’t think I’ve read\u00a0any<\/em> of these yet. Except the SEP.<\/p>\n

There are two more bookshelves just like it. \u00a0And that doesn’t even\u00a0touch<\/em> on the ebooks. Readers glom on books. \u00a0So you’re kinda lucky that they even cracked open that book to notice there was a problem within in seven days.<\/p>\n

Amazon’s rules are set up so that as long as you return the book\u00a0within a week<\/em>, you can get a refund. \u00a0That’s set up to protect the customer. \u00a0Are there jerks who will abuse it? \u00a0Yes. Because people are people and some people are jerks. \u00a0Just like some authors are out there calling readers scammers and thieves… (FYI…that’s being a jerk.) \u00a0But the majority of readers do\u00a0not<\/em> set out to buy a book just to return it, rip you off. \u00a0Amazon\u00a0can<\/em> track that. \u00a0If excessive returns are made, their accounts\u00a0do<\/em> get flagged. Then those accounts can be shut down.<\/p>\n

Dealing with returns is part of being a writer. Traditionally pubbed writers have to deal with it. \u00a0And so does this new ‘cutting edge’ part of publishing. \u00a0I know. \u00a0I do it all and I’ve dealt with it all.<\/p>\n

You want to be a writer? \u00a0This is part of it.<\/p>\n

Tomorrow? \u00a0Dealing with bad reviews. \u00a0(No. \u00a0Not really. I already blogged about that. It involves pink unicorns. Or maybe they were purple.)<\/p>\n

ETA: \u00a0BTW, hopefully it won’t be an issue, but if you wonder onto my blog because if my PSA… please be civil. \u00a0Otherwise, the post won’t remain up for long. \u00a0I try to keep this a decent place for my readers and they won’t want to come back if it gets ugly. \u00a0If you want to be uncivil and such, you can do it on your own turf. \u00a0This is mine. \u00a0Disagree all you want…that’s fine. \u00a0But do it in without getting ugly.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
