She shivered as he whispered it, his lips pressed against her neck as he spoke.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhatever is wrong with you, calling me that?\u201d she said, swallowing around the knot that had lodged in her throat. Easing away from him, she eyed him nervously before glancing around. Nobody could see them from here, unless of course Patrick had managed to stash his men in the hotel. Not likely, that.<\/p>\n

\u201cI dunno. Seems to suit you.\u00a0 The accent. The way you carry yourself\u2026all smooth and elegant.\u201d He touched his finger to her lip. \u201cWhat scares you?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t see how that could suit me,\u201d she said faintly, ignoring the last part of his question as she tugged her tank down.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy are you afraid?\u201d he asked, putting himself in her way.<\/p>\n

With a brittle smile, she shook her head. \u201cI\u2019m not afraid,\u201d she lied.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t lie to me. You know as well as I do, it doesn\u2019t work. You\u2019re terrified, damn it. Why?\u201d<\/p>\n

Dru shook her head. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t do any good to talk about it. You can\u2019t help anyway. I must go.\u201d<\/p>\n

Part of her questioned why she wasn\u2019t furious with him\u2014this was a stranger. She didn\u2019t know him. But all she could think about was how much she wished she could stay. How much she longed to go back to him\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. lean against him, touch him. Taste him. Take him.<\/p>\n

But when he reached for her, she evaded him.<\/p>\n

\u201cMeet me here tomorrow,\u201d he said flatly.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d She continued to back away, glancing around for signs that one of Patrick\u2019s men might have caught up with her. Nothing. There was a shiny black car in the parking lot of the Waffle House across the street, but it wasn\u2019t one of Patrick\u2019s. If it was, she\u2019d know.\u00a0 She\u2019d feel it somehow.<\/p>\n

\u201cDru, talk to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

She shot him another look. Then, finally, fury and frustration sparked inside her, and she glared at him as it bubbled over and spilled out. \u201cStop. Damn you, why couldn\u2019t you have come into my life a year ago? Two years ago? Why now? I can\u2019t have you now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Without bothering to explain, she took off running.<\/p>\n

She was torn between hoping he\u2019d follow, and praying he wouldn\u2019t.<\/p>\n
