\u201cElf.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLook there, see the ears? Oh, my stars, see her eyes?\u201d<\/p>\n

The voices blended into the background as she took a step closer, one hand straying to her neck, stroking the amulet there.<\/p>\n

The mortal shook his head, smiling slightly as he retreated back to his table in the corner.<\/p>\n

The guard\u2019s eyes, like everyone else\u2019s, were riveted on the delicate point of her ears. The luminescent sheen of her eyes intensified and the air around her almost seemed to shimmer. Smiling at him, she asked, \u201cShall I continue to mind my own business?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPerhaps\u2026perhaps it was my own\u2026my own fault, milady,\u201d the guard stuttered, fear making his mouth suddenly dry. \u201cAn\u2019 he is jes\u2019 a kid, after all. No harm done.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNone at all.\u201d An agreeable smile lit Tyriel\u2019s face and the tension that had filled her drained out as the guard backed down, dropping into his seat, studiously avoiding her gaze.<\/p>\n

It didn\u2019t surprise her, as far south as she was. The folk in Zhalia were notoriously superstitious; elves were ranked on the same level as saints and angels and demons. To be feared, respected, or worshipped, depending who you asked and when.<\/p>\n

Though one might think unkindly thoughts of the fae, few spoke them aloud for fear that the fae people would hear and drag them off to the cities in the hills to slave away in the elvish mines.<\/p>\n

Though her chest ached from resisting the bully\u2019s shove, she didn\u2019t reach up to rub it, knowing better than to show any sign of weakness or reaction.<\/p>\n

A low amused voice said, \u201cThat\u2019s a rather\u2026interesting act you have there. What was that, mass hypnosis?\u201d<\/p>\n

Turning to study the hooded stranger in the corner, Tyriel cocked her head. \u201cNothing so extravagant.\u201d Moving closer, she bent over the table and gave a conspiratorial wink and said, \u201cWe elves eat babies at breakfast, didn\u2019t you know? They know better than to anger us.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHmm. How odd. All the elves I\u2019ve ever known were vegetarians,\u201d the man said in a low voice, careful to keep anybody else from overhearing as he reached up and shoved his hood back.<\/p>\n

Oh, my<\/i>, Tyriel thought with interest as she studied the pale face revealed. A face that could have been carved from alabaster stared back at her, with wide eyes of deep blue.\u00a0My, my, my<\/i>.<\/p>\n

The slight arch of her brow was the only sign that she was the slightest bit impressed by that little known fact. And nothing revealed that her tongue was about ready to hang out of her mouth. \u201cAre you going to give me away? Let them know how meek and cowardly we really are?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t say a thing about meek or cowardly.\u201d Gesturing to the seat at his side, he said, \u201cI am curious exactly how you managed that, though. I\u2019ve never seen a guard from this towne back down from anything short of a fair fight.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt wouldn\u2019t have been fair. I was busting men like him when I was barely old enough to pick up a sword.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHardly what I meant.\u201d<\/p>\n

Recognizing the persistence, Tyriel shrugged. \u201cIt\u2019s not a secret or anything. The folk in this part of the country are notoriously superstitious. They still believe that we lurk around in the shadow world, waiting for people to displease us so we can haul them away to harvest our mines for us.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI doubt you\u2019d let somebody who wasn\u2019t elvish into your mines,\u201d the swordsman said, beckoning for another ale. \u201cCan I buy you one?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll pass.\u201d She shuddered in remembrance of the one taste she had taken as she studied him. And he was quite a treat to the eyes\u2026a fine one, indeed. That mouth\u2026it was giving her some naughty ideas that had her belly getting tight as she shifted on the hard bench. \u201cYou seem to know quite a bit about the kin,\u201d Tyriel mused, declining the offered mug from the serving girl. \u201cHow is that?\u201d<\/p>\n

He flashed her a grin. \u201cI get around.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHmmm. In your travels, have you heard of glamour?\u201d she asked, her voice dropping to just above a whisper. With a conspiratorial wink, she said, \u201cIt\u2019s a neat little trick that makes people think they are seeing something that isn\u2019t there. Or more than what they already see.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo your eyes weren\u2019t really glowing in the dark?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you think?\u201d<\/p>\n
