\u201cYou\u2019re getting your ass on a plane, that\u2019s what you\u2019re doing.\u00a0 That\u2019s the only thing you\u2019re doing, so deal with it,\u201d Kelsey said, storming into her office.\u00a0 She jerked the band from her ponytail as she settled behind her desk.\u00a0 When she looked back at him, the irritation she felt was written all over her face, glinting in her eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not getting on a plane.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kelsey narrowed her eyes.\u00a0 \u201cYou know, I get the feeling you thought that was a request.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t.\u00a0 It\u2019s an order, Duke.\u00a0 Get packed, get to the airport.\u00a0 I\u2019ll have a ticket waiting for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy in the hell am I going?\u201d He already knew the answer, though.\u00a0 Because he had to.\u00a0 It had been pulling at him from the time he got out of bed, and now that he knew where<\/span><\/em> he needed to be, it was like some fiery fist had a hold on his gut, dragging him along while he stood with his heels planted in the dirt and fought back.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re going because you took the call,\u201d she replied, her voice level.\u00a0 \u201cAnd I\u2019m not talking about the damn telephone\u2026although, Duke, stay the hell out of my office.\u201d<\/p>\n

Clenching his jaw, he glared at the witch.\u00a0 He was pissed, he was wrong, he was<\/span><\/em> going to Alaska, and he fucking hated all three. Worse, though, was the fact that he was going to have seen Ana.<\/p>\n

Shit.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t want to see her, look into those soft purple eyes and let her tangle him up inside again.\u00a0 He was still trying to undo the knots from the night they\u2019d first met and it had been years.\u00a0 At the same time, though, there was a huge part of him that was almost desperate to see her again.<\/p>\n

Frustrated rage twisted through him, bitter reluctance lay on the back of his tongue.\u00a0 Gritting his teeth, he said, \u201cI don\u2019t like this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kelsey gave him a mockingly sympathetic smile.\u00a0 \u201cReally?\u00a0 I hadn\u2019t noticed.\u201d\u00a0 Then she shrugged and leaned over her desk, eying the files there with acute dislike.\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t much care if you like it or not, but it\u2019s what you have to do\u2026and you know it.\u00a0 You also know that you\u2019re one of the few that can<\/span><\/em> do this.\u201d<\/p>\n

He folded his arms over his chest.\u00a0 \u201cOther Hunters can manage going that far north.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the winter, yeah, a vamp could do a short stint.\u00a0 But the poles are hell on witches\u2026trust me, I know.\u00a0 I can handle it, but it\u2019s not like I\u2019m free to head north for a while.\u00a0 Not too many other witches free who could cope up there, I can guarantee that.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been to Alaska and it\u2019s like trying to focus on one grain of sand in the middle of a sandstorm.\u00a0 Weres have control issues that far north\u2014something about the polarity, but I\u2019m not a science minded type and I don\u2019t need to understand.\u00a0 You\u2019re a natural shifter, Duke.\u00a0 You might feel a little more on edge up there, but you can handle it.\u201d<\/p>\n

With a smirk, she added, \u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s Alaska<\/span><\/em> that\u2019s the problem, though.\u201d<\/p>\n

He flushed and focused on his feet.\u00a0 Ana<\/span><\/em>\u2014<\/p>\n

Yeah.\u00a0 Ana was a fucking problem.<\/p>\n

Kelsey leaned back in her chair and kicked her legs up, rested her booted feet on the desk.\u00a0 \u201cAna\u2019s the problem,\u201d she said quietly, echoing his thoughts with eerie precision.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think you can handle it, but if you have doubts\u2026\u201d She let her voice trail off and pursed her lips thoughtfully.\u00a0 \u201cThere are<\/span><\/em> other shifters, I suppose.\u00a0 Or I could talk to the witches, see how many of them have experience that far north.\u00a0 Some of the witches can<\/span><\/em> function there, it just takes time, practice, some experience is nice. Hmmmm.\u201d<\/p>\n

A sly smile curved her mouth. \u00a0\u201cI think Grady could handle it.\u00a0 He was born in northern Michigan.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grady\u2014<\/p>\n

A mental image of the witch flashed through his mind.\u00a0 The black man was a nice guy and under normal circumstances, Duke would definitely agree that Grady could handle a few weeks in a place where his gift might become unpredictable.\u00a0 Fine, send him<\/span><\/em>.\u00a0 The words burned on his tongue.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe hell he will,\u201d he snarled.<\/p>\n

Kelsey gave him an innocent look.\u00a0 \u201cOh, I don\u2019t know, Duke.\u00a0 Plus, he\u2019s on friendly terms with Ana\u2014\u201c<\/p>\n

Duke growled.<\/p>\n
