How exposed. \u201cYou\u2019re doing your best to take care of him, Gus, I get that. But that boy is like an exposed nerve bed. He\u2019s got no training and too much raw power. Anybody who knows how to look for psychic skill would be able to find him in a heartbeat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tense silence stretched out, before a low curse shattered it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Mierda<\/em>,\u201d Gus snarled, his voice furious and hot.<\/p>\n<p>Vaughnne\u2019s grasp of Spanish was pretty limited, but she understood that one.\u00a0 Lifting a brow, she said, \u201c<em>Shit<\/em> doesn\u2019t even cover it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just told you.\u00a0 He\u2019s exposed.\u00a0 He has no idea how to hide himself.\u00a0 Hell, he\u2019s like a neon sign in the dark.\u00a0 Anybody who knew how to look could find him,\u201d she said.\u00a0 \u201cAnd if the <em>wrong<\/em> people come looking?\u00a0 He\u2019s got problems.\u00a0 Today, the wrong people came looking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then, from the corner of her eye, she saw him shake his head. \u201cThe boy reads people. He can see danger. He\u2019d know\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe never saw me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence, once more, fell between them and she had to fight not to cringe under the weight of that deadly stare. Her instincts were screaming again. <em>Danger, danger, danger<\/em>, a terrible litany that had her wanting to run, and hide. Far and fast. Hide from Gus.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, he broke the silence, his voice almost terribly gently as he asked, \u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe never saw me. \u00a0I\u2019m not a threat to you, but he had no idea that I\u2019m psychic, that I was there to watch him. He has no idea that people out there, like <em>us<\/em>, can sense him. He doesn\u2019t know how to hide what he is. \u00a0He may be a force to be reckoned with, but he didn\u2019t realize there was another psychic right in front of him.\u00a0 And Gus?\u00a0 I\u2019m not all that. If I can hide what I am, there are plenty of others who can do the same. Others who can hide what they <em>are<\/em>, what they <em>think<\/em>. He\u2019s powerful, but he\u2019s just a kid\u2026a scared, untrained one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd how do I know you do not lie to me?\u201d he demanded, his voice edgy and harsh. The gun was jamming into her ribs now, hard enough that it was going to leave a bruise. \u201cYou could be lying now. You say you\u2019re\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe first time I saw you walking up my sidewalk, I thought to myself\u2026the view was fine,\u201d<\/em> Vaughnne whispered into his mind. Her gift was telepathy and it worked best in words, but if she had to, she could project images. It took more thought, and it worked best if the emotion was strong.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, she had plenty of <em>strong<\/em> emotion when it came to Gus. Lust definitely counted, right?<\/p>\n<p>She projected the image of how it felt, that first look, the sight of him, how it had sent heat and appreciation flooding through her.<\/p>\n<p>Then as she heard his harsh intake of breath, she shifted the focus of her thought. <em>\u201cThen I looked at the boy and I was caught between nerves and pain. He\u2019s too young for the burden he\u2019s bearing, Gus\u2026and you know it. I don\u2019t even know what his burden is, and <\/em>I<em> know it.\u00a0 I can see it on him.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>She pushed the image that she carried of Alex into Gus\u2019s mind. That first image, Alex, all long, skinny limbs and big, scared eyes, and a fear he tried so hard to hide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough,\u201d Gus said, his voice flat. \u201cEnough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Due out sometime in 2013.
