The floorboards, old and worn, creaked.<\/p>\n

Shooting a glance over my shoulder, I saw Luc coming my way.<\/p>\n

He moved slowly, with an easy, casual grace. When we\u2019d first settled into the room, Krell had trotted all over it, time and time again, and I suspected Luc had been committing the room\u2019s layout to memory. He\u2019d moved around it several times over himself and now he came toward me unerringly. I was tempted to dodge around him and go hide on my bed.<\/p>\n

Only one thing stopped me\u2014pride.<\/p>\n

Damn it, I was Myrsina. Others of our ilk trembled when they heard my name.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d be damned if I\u2019d dodge away and hide because this one man made me nervous.<\/p>\n

Even if I was standing there in just a T-shirt that skimmed a little high on my thighs.<\/p>\n

I was nervous, damn it. Nervous and it made me even more nervous, and that pissed me off.<\/p>\n

Defensively, I crossed my arms over my chest and decided I\u2019d make a point of studying the black and white framed photograph hanging over his bed. It was of a ruin\u2014probably local. The landscape was oddly familiar. Yes, yes, focus on the mundane\u2014<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy do you think you hear it when I don\u2019t?\u201d<\/p>\n

Baring my teeth in a mockery of a smile, I said, \u201cBecause I\u2019m the lucky sort, I guess.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHmm. Nice try. But I\u2019m not buying it. Try again.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe you<\/em> are the lucky sort,\u201d I offered, shooting him a narrow look.<\/p>\n

He cocked his head, a frown on that incredibly perfect face. I wanted to push my hand through his hair. Pull him to me, and for once\u2026even if it was<\/em> just once\u2026I wanted to kiss him. Taste those lips, and feel his mouth on mine.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy are you angry with me?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not,\u201d I bit off. Was I?<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re angry with something and it has to do with me,\u201d he said, his voice mild enough. \u201cI feel it\u2014your anger is like a red wave in my head.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

He lifted a hand.<\/p>\n

Unerringly, he touched my face and I felt my breath squeeze down in nothing in my chest.<\/p>\n

No, don\u2019t touch me<\/em>\u2014<\/p>\n

But I couldn\u2019t move away.<\/p>\n

Not for anything. \u201cYou are angry,\u201d he murmured. \u201cAnd\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Move, Sina<\/em>! The voice of self-preservation was a trumpeting roar in my head and I knew I needed to move, needed to break contact. Even with my shields up, there were some things that were simply impossible to hide if the person had a gift like my own.<\/p>\n

And Luc\u2019s gift\u2026was\u2026just\u2026like\u2026mine.<\/p>\n

Helpless, frozen in place, I stared at him and watched his eyes narrow. As something passed through his gaze, an awareness, I finally managed to find the strength to pull away and nudge him aside. \u201cI\u2019m not angry with you,\u201d I said, my voice so raw I barely recognized it. \u201cI\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

He caught my arm.<\/p>\n

I jerked away but he didn\u2019t let go.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you don\u2019t let me go,\u201d I warned him. \u201cI\u2019ll\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

So many years.<\/p>\n

Did he have any idea what it was like to want something, to need it, for so long? And now, here he was\u2026right there. In front of me. And not only was he right there<\/em>\u2026in front of me\u2026it was happening at a time when I was so fucking vulnerable, when I felt so raw and exposed already.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet me go, Luc.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The wave of red he felt in his mind stunned him for a second.<\/p>\n

It was anger.<\/p>\n

Luc knew anger.<\/p>\n

Had lived with it with Perci for years, although it hadn\u2019t ever been directed at him.<\/p>\n

But he was no stranger to it.<\/p>\n

Feeling it come from Sina was something of a shock, because to his knowledge, he hadn\u2019t ever done anything that might anger her that<\/em> much\u2014had he?<\/p>\n

The wave shuddered\u2026and like one crashing against the sand, it broke. Over in the distance, he could feel another wave gathering, rising, rushing to the shore, but under it, he felt something else.<\/p>\n

Under his hand, her skin felt smooth. It was odd that he noticed it then. As his mind was trying to understand that puzzle of her, he couldn\u2019t help but notice how insanely soft, how impossibly smooth her skin was. And she smelled incredible.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet me go, Luc.\u201d Her voice was husky, rough. She jerked against his hold and reflexively, he jerked back.<\/p>\n

She tumbled against his chest and he lifted a hand, rested it on her hip.<\/p>\n

He\u2019d lost his mind.<\/p>\n

It was the only thing that made sense.<\/p>\n

Nobody in his right<\/em> mind would touch Sina if she didn\u2019t want to be touched\u2014<\/p>\n

There\u2014<\/p>\n

The puzzle pieces clicked into place and all of a sudden, he saw it.<\/p>\n

Saw what he hadn\u2019t seen and understood what it was under the wave of anger. Anger\u2026yes. Mostly at herself. Frustration\u2026<\/p>\n

Hunger\u2014<\/em><\/p>\n

His brain clicked off.<\/p>\n

\u201cDamn it, are you not hearing me?\u201d Sina demanded, her voice rising. \u201cLet me go.\u201d<\/p>\n

He opened his mouth. The words came out of their volition, he\u2019d swear it. Because he wasn\u2019t so crazy he\u2019d challenge her like that\u2026was he? \u201cAnd if I don\u2019t?\u201d<\/p>\n

He felt her tense against him.<\/p>\n

It had been centuries since he\u2019d lost his sight.<\/p>\n

He couldn\u2019t remember missing it more than he did at that moment.<\/p>\n

\u201cLuc\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

He fisted his hand in the material of the shirt she wore\u2014it was cotton, he thought, soft and warm from being against her skin. Maybe he\u2019d like to peel it away from her. And\u2014<\/p>\n

Her mouth covered his.<\/p>\n

Her hands pushed into his hair and she jerked him close.<\/p>\n
