She\u2019d rather hurt, damn it. Hurt instead of feel nothing. <em>Anything <\/em>was better than nothing But lately, that was \u00a0all she felt\u2014nothing. Just emptiness.\u00a0 She hated that more than anything else.\u00a0 She\u2019d take pain, she\u2019d take anger over the void inside her.<\/p>\n<p>Carefully, she rose from her chair and made her way over to one of the seats closer to the fireplace. They were low slung, perfect for cuddling into, perfect for reading, or in her case\u2026brooding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you call him from the restaurant?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Swallowing around the knot in her throat, Alexis said quietly, \u201cI think it\u2019s over, Mel. I really, really do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was a harsh intake of breath\u2014the only response Melissa made for a long while.<\/p>\n<p>As the seconds ticked away, Alexis nursed her wine, welcoming the warmth as it spread through her body.<\/p>\n<p>Over.<\/p>\n<p>Did she really need to consider that it <em>was<\/em> over?<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019d felt so empty, so apart from him for so long, and he never seemed to reach out to her, but she hadn\u2019t realized it was this bad. Not until tonight.<\/p>\n<p>He hadn\u2019t even called.<\/p>\n<p>There had been a time when he\u2019d always called, or sent her an email, texted her\u2014something to let her know he wouldn\u2019t be home on time. And it had happened\u2026often. Garrett was a cop and once he\u2019d earned his detective\u2019s shield, those hours had only become more insane.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody understood how crazy the job was better than she did. Her dad had been a cop. Two of her brothers were. She understood the job, respected it.\u00a0 And he\u2019d understood that she worried, that she just wanted to know he was okay.\u00a0 So he kept in touch when he could while she tried not to worry.\u00a0 They made it work, damn it.\u00a0 Or they had.<\/p>\n<p>But it wasn\u2019t the job that was breaking them.<\/p>\n<p><em>They<\/em> were breaking them.<\/p>\n<p><em>Yeah.<\/em> As the tears started to burn her eyes, she whispered, \u201cI think maybe it\u2019s over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This time, Melissa spoke. \u201cHoney\u2026if that\u2019s what you want\u2026okay.
