{"id":29784,"date":"2012-05-21T09:00:02","date_gmt":"2012-05-21T13:00:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/?p=29784"},"modified":"2012-05-21T10:48:52","modified_gmt":"2012-05-21T14:48:52","slug":"the-one","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/2012\/05\/the-one\/","title":{"rendered":"The One"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wwwwwwaaaayyyyy back&#8230; I had an idea about psychic-type cops. \u00a0The bare rough idea started with\u00a0<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/?page_id=323\">this book..<\/a><\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/?page_id=323\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-29785\" title=\"Talking to the Dead\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/SW_TalkingToDead72LG-200x300.jpg?resize=200%2C300\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/SW_TalkingToDead72LG.jpg?resize=200%2C300&amp;ssl=1 200w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/SW_TalkingToDead72LG.jpg?w=432&amp;ssl=1 432w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was rough&#8230; it is rough, but still. \u00a0It&#8217;s sort of from there that idea for Taige, Jillian, Cullen, all of those ideas emerged.<\/p>\n<p>I think I&#8217;m going to start playing with some shorter FBI books in between&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s my first stab&#8230;<em>The One<\/em>. \u00a0Details coming soon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe dumped me because he got tired of washing the blood out of our sheets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Destin Mortin swallowed the knot in her throat and lifted her gaze to stare into the unreadable eyes of her boss, Elise Oswald, aka Oz.\u00a0 Although Destin\u2019s heart was racing a mile a minute and her palms were sweating, none of it showed on her face.<\/p>\n<p>She was a master at hiding how she felt.\u00a0 Came in handy\u2014in her line of work.\u00a0 In her job.<\/p>\n<p>It didn&#8217;t matter if she was tracking down a rapist, if she&#8217;d just connected with one, if she was caught in the middle of his mind while he tracked down his next victim.<\/p>\n<p>Being a psychic, that was something that happened fairly regularly, especially with her. For reasons she couldn\u2019t quite fathom, she usually connected with violent sexual predators.\u00a0 It was a screwed-up ability, but because of it, she knew how to hide what she was thinking, what she was feeling pretty damn well.<\/p>\n<p>And it was definitely coming in handy now, under the eagle eye of her boss, the woman who\u2019d just asked about the man who&#8217;d held her heart, and broken it.<\/p>\n<p>With a cool smile, Destin met Oz\u2019s gaze and shrugged. &#8220;What does it matter now?\u00a0 We broke up five years ago and he&#8217;s still with the Bureau.\u00a0 I&#8217;m very much not.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Oz cocked a silvery-blonde brow, her expression remote.\u00a0 It wasn&#8217;t the expression she usually wore here in the office.<\/p>\n<p>Oz smiled.\u00a0 She laughed.\u00a0 She let people know if she was pissed or cranky or if she&#8217;d been up too late reading a book.\u00a0\u00a0 The few times her expression didn\u2019t show was when she felt a need to hold those cards close to her chest&#8230;a bad case, troubling one.\u00a0 When one of them was about to get thrown into something they didn\u2019t like.<\/p>\n<p>And she\u2019d just asked about Caleb&#8230;<em>shit.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Stop it, <\/em>she told herself.\u00a0 It couldn\u2019t mean anything.\u00a0 Caleb Durand had left Oz\u2019s group years ago and he was still an agent with the FBI. Oz did private work now.\u00a0 <em><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Nothing to worry about.<\/p>\n<p>But that tight, composed expression on Oz\u2019s face was troubling.\u00a0 Very troubling. Over the past few years, her pale blonde hair had slowly gone silver.\u00a0 There were a few more lines around her green eyes.\u00a0 But other than that, Oz looked pretty much exactly as she had when she\u2019d recruited Destin ten years earlier.\u00a0 She was every bit as inscrutable now as she had been then and that blank expression had Destin\u2019s belly shrinking down into a tight, cold knot.<\/p>\n<p><em>Why in the hell is she asking about Caleb?<\/em> <em><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Destin slumped more comfortably in the seat and prepared herself to wait it out. If it had been just anybody else in the group, she might have tried a psychic probe&#8211;she didn\u2019t always strike gold with those, but on occasion, she\u2019d pick up something.\u00a0 But she wouldn\u2019t with Oz. The other woman was a blank surface, until she decided she didn&#8217;t want to be.<\/p>\n<p>Oz leaned back in her chair absently toying with a Mont Blanc pen.\u00a0 The woman loved them.\u00a0 Loved them, and lost them.<\/p>\n<p>Destin didn&#8217;t see why she bothered.\u00a0 A pen was a pen.<\/p>\n<p>As Oz tapped the pen on the arm of her chair, she watched Destin, her eyes close and watchful.<\/p>\n<p>Destin was damned glad she knew how to hide what she was thinking.\u00a0 What she was feeling.\u00a0 Oz was studying her, staring at her with eyes that seemed to see clear through to her soul and Destin felt like curling up into a little ball and hiding, like that would make whatever this was just go away.<\/p>\n<p>Seconds ticked away and then the silence was shattered by Oz&#8217;s blunt statement, &#8220;You&#8217;re full of it, Destin.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Destin shrugged.\u00a0 &#8220;Hey, you can&#8217;t blame the guy.\u00a0 It gets disconcerting to wake up and find your girlfriend covered in blood and nearly catatonic once or twice a month.&#8221;\u00a0 Destin had gotten caught in odd dream-like visions for more than half of her life and when they came at her unawares, they often came with vicious headaches and heavy nosebleeds.\u00a0 Very attractive stuff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid it happen that often?\u201d Oz\u2019s face softened a little, the blank mask fading away as she leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>The visions that hit Destin didn\u2019t always happen easily.\u00a0 Sometimes they were a mere figment, just a wisp of a thing.\u00a0 Other times, they came with a brutal, one-two punch that left her reeling, dealing with the physical aftermath.<\/p>\n<p>Bad?\u00a0 Not always.\u00a0 But sometimes?\u00a0 Yeah.\u00a0 And nothing freaked out a boyfriend quite like waking up in the morning to find his woman covered in blood and practically catatonic.<\/p>\n<p>Destin shrugged.\u00a0 \u201cYes.\u00a0 Sometimes more.\u201d\u00a0 She smirked and hoped it masked the pain she felt.\u00a0 \u201cI got used to it a long time ago, but it\u2019s probably a little disconcerting for others.\u00a0 Probably gets real old, too, after a while. Hell, it gets old for <em>me<\/em>.\u00a0 But I&#8217;m stuck with it.\u00a0 No reason for others to deal with it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The nosebleeds came with the visions.\u00a0 They were something she was stuck with and there was nothing she could do but deal with them.\u00a0 Granted, Caleb hadn&#8217;t ever acted like they bothered him and more than once, she&#8217;d come out of the trance-like state to find him gently cleaning the blood from her face.<\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;d never once made her feel like the freak she knew she was.\u00a0 He&#8217;d never once made her feel like a monster or like some twisted, perverted thing that should never exist.<\/p>\n<p><em>She<\/em> made herself feel like that.\u00a0 Her parents had.\u00a0 One or two of the friends she\u2019d tried to trust with the information.<em><\/em><\/p>\n<p>But Caleb had&#8211;<\/p>\n<p><em>Stop.\u00a0 Caleb walked <\/em>out<em>, remember?\u00a0 <\/em>Just like everybody else in her life.\u00a0 He\u2019d walked out.<em><\/em><\/p>\n<p>And just like it was yesterday, she saw it all playing it out.\u00a0 The way he&#8217;d looked as he sat across from her and told her he didn&#8217;t know if they were heading anywhere or not.\u00a0 Destin had been frozen with terror, because she had known where he was going.\u00a0 Out the door.\u00a0 They all hit the door sooner or later, and that was exactly what happened with him, too.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You know, Destin,&#8221; Oz said, tossing the pen down on the desk and leaning back.\u00a0 &#8220;I\u2019m not quite buying that.\u00a0 I\u2019m not buying that Durand dumped you because he didn\u2019t like that you wake up with nosebleeds after having one of your dreams.\u00a0 It just doesn\u2019t click.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Destin shifted in the chair and crossed her legs.\u00a0 \u201cLook, I don\u2019t know why he dumped me.\u00a0 For all I know he got bored with me\u2014\u201d The rest of the words wanted to stick in her throat, but she forced them out.\u00a0 \u201cMaybe he found somebody that was a little less neurotic to deal with.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t matter.\u00a0 It\u2019s over.\u00a0 It\u2019s done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDestin, if it didn\u2019t matter, I wouldn\u2019t have you in here.\u00a0\u00a0 Like you said, it\u2019s been five years.\u00a0 I\u2019m not asking just because I\u2019m bored, or because I\u2019m going to reprimand you for having an affair with a colleague.\u00a0 It\u2019s because\u2014\u201d her eyes cut to the door.<\/p>\n<p>A second later, Destin heard the door open.<\/p>\n<p>The skin on the back of her neck crawled and she squeezed her eyes shut.\u00a0 Her heart started to race and her skin felt too tight, too small.\u00a0 Something that might have been happiness bloomed inside her heart before it withered and died as reality shifted and settled into place.<\/p>\n<p>Even before he spoke, she knew.<\/p>\n<p>Opening her eyes, she glared at Oz.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood afternoon, ladies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wwwwwwaaaayyyyy back&#8230;
