Tania smiled, shaking her head. She flipped the bacon out of the pan and reached for the eggs. A nice, cholesterol-heavy, fattening breakfast. \u201cYes. I did need it\u2014I need to control something, something that you didn\u2019t necessarily even want\u2014and maybe I even needed it that way. I know that wasn\u2019t fair. But I did need it. Maybe it will help if I tell you that it did help.\u201d<\/p>\n

Behind her, he was quiet. He wouldn\u2019t ask, she suspected. So she continued. \u201cIt helped me. I woke up this morning feeling like I\u2019d broken through some last link of chain or something. I\u2019m sorry it took hurting you, though.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou didn\u2019t\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cStop it.\u201d She cracked the eggs into the skillet, watched as they sizzled. \u201cDon\u2019t tell me it didn\u2019t hurt you, that you\u2019re not angry. I know you, Drake, I know how much you keep trapped inside. And I am <\/em>sorry I hurt you.\u201d<\/p>\n

More silence.<\/p>\n

She finished the eggs, slid them onto a plate for each of them, added the bacon.<\/p>\n

Then she turned to him. He sat there, still wearing that unreadable expression, his blue eyes blank. So much distance between them, so much. She forced a smile. \u201cAnd you want me to believe you\u2019re not angry,\u201d she murmured, setting the plates down and settling onto a stool.<\/p>\n

Drake closed his eyes. His hand came down, covered hers. \u201cI\u2019m not. Tawny, I\u2019m not angry. I just\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Something about his expression warned her. Even before he said it. Even before he didn\u2019t <\/em>say it. Because he didn\u2019t say what she knew he wanted to\u2014he didn\u2019t say the words she could see all but trapped inside him. He gave her a tight, tired smile. \u201cI\u2019m not angry,\u201d he said again. \u201cI\u2019m always here for when you need me. For\u2026hell. Whatever you need. I\u2019ll give it to you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then he pushed back and stood up.<\/p>\n

Tears burned her throat. She listened to his quiet footfalls. She should just let him go, she thought\u2014she\u2019d taken too much, she realized. She needed to let him go, maybe do what Gail had done and just leave. Move on. Let him do the same.<\/p>\n

But she couldn\u2019t, because she needed him. She loved him.<\/p>\n
