It’s raining men… heroes and side characters…in my case, it’s Zach and his brothers. \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know, if Zach ever decides to come back, my agent is there to help him\u2026and I know you\u2019re done with it.\u00a0 How are you going to feel if he does it?\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead of pointing out that Zach had said a hundred times<\/em> that he didn\u2019t want to go back, she reached for the knife and started slicing up the bread.\u00a0 \u201cZach\u2019s life is his own, Seb.\u00a0 I can\u2019t control it.\u201d\u00a0 She shot him a look and then went back to the chore in front of her, hoping he\u2019d take the point.\u00a0 See\u2026 look at me, I\u2019m busy,busy.<\/em><\/p>\n

He laughed a little.\u00a0 \u201cYeah, that\u2019s what you think.\u201d<\/p>\n

The undercurrent in his voice got to her, rubbed her so very, very wrong.\u00a0 Carefully, she put the knife down.\u00a0 Because she didn\u2019t want to get pissed off here, because she didn\u2019t want to get pissed off at Sebastian, she took a minute to reach for her wine.\u00a0 It was more to give herself a minute to think through anything she might say, to puzzle through just what<\/em> that might mean.\u00a0 But she had no stunning revelations in the thirty seconds it took to drink the yummy Ratafia that Zach always managed to keep on hand for her. It came from a winery in Albuquerque and she was tempted to toss the entire glass back and then pour another.<\/p>\n

But she doubted it would do a damn thing to lessen her irritation.<\/p>\n

So instead, she lowered the glass back down and lifted her gaze to study Sebastian.\u00a0 \u201cOkay.\u00a0 So you think I can control Zach\u2019s life.\u00a0 Exactly how do I do that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou got him to move away from L.A.\u201d\u00a0 Sebastian\u2019s eyes narrowed on her face and although his voice never once raised, she heard the resentment there.<\/p>\n

And it was strong.\u00a0 Damn it, where in the hell had that<\/em> come from?<\/p>\n

\u201cI<\/em> got him to move?\u201d she asked, pushing away from the counter.\u00a0 \u201cExactly how did I do that?\u00a0 We\u2019ve been seeing exactly for exactly two weeks.\u00a0 He moved to Tucson years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

The door opened, but neither of them paid it much attention.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s spent more than half of his life doing exactly what you<\/em> wanted him to do, Abby,\u201d Sebastian said, his voice icy, full of disgust.\u00a0 \u201cAre you ever going to–\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSebastian.\u201d<\/p>\n

He cut a look over his shoulder at Zane.\u00a0 \u201cBack off,\u201d he snapped.\u00a0 \u201cThis is between me and Abby.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere shouldn\u2019t be a damn thing between you and Abby,\u201d Zane said.<\/p>\n

Abigale glanced over at him and the look on his face was one of apology, but she ignored it, looking back at Sebastian.\u00a0 \u201cAm I ever going to what?\u201d she demanded.<\/p>\n

\u201cSebastian, if you don\u2019t shut the fuck up,\u201d Zane warned.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m going to\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

Whipping her head around, Abigale glared at Zane.\u00a0 He\u2019d been liked the big brother she never had, teasing her, protecting her, needling her.\u00a0 And right now, he was pissing her off.\u00a0 \u201cZane, you either shut the fuck up, or I\u2019m going to punch you,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She was vaguely aware the door had opened again, vaguely aware that more people had trickled into the kitchen, but she didn\u2019t give a damn.\u00a0 Sebastian was still glaring at her, although when he shot the people around them a look, a muscle pulsed in his jaw.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll discuss it some other time,\u201d he said quietly.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, the hell we will.\u201d\u00a0 Crossing her arms over her chest, she glared at him.\u00a0 \u201cI want to know just in the hell I\u2019m controlling Zach.\u00a0 I want to know how I\u2019m stopping him from chasing after a life back in California\u2026even though he sure as hell doesn\u2019t want it<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHow in the fuck would you know?\u201d Sebastian snapped.\u00a0 He shoved a hand through his hand and advanced on her, bending down to snarl in her face.\u00a0 \u201cYou don\u2019t know shit<\/em> about what he wants, because the one thing he does want?\u00a0 You\u2019ve never even\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

His eyes shot over her shoulder and Abigale watched as he slowly straightened. His jaw clenched and that pretty face of his went hard as stone.\u00a0 \u201cZach.\u201d<\/p>\n

A hand came up and curled over Abigale\u2019s shoulder.\u00a0 Abruptly, the rush of anger cleared from her head and she felt a little sick as she looked around.\u00a0 Almost the entire family had gathered in there.\u00a0 Not just Lana and her husband, Ron.\u00a0 Not just Zach\u2019s brothers and their dates.\u00a0 But cousins, the kids.\u00a0 Friends.\u00a0 Nearly thirty people had managed to squeeze their way inside the brightly light kitchen and they were now watching the entire thing.<\/p>\n

Pressing a hand to her belly, she blew out a breath and then shifted her attention over to Lana and the twins.\u00a0 The hell if she apologized to Sebastian, the jack-ass. But Lana, the twins\u2026it was their day.\u00a0 \u201cLana, guys, I am so sorry,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n

Lana\u2019s eyes snapped and burned, but she smiled at her.\u00a0 \u201cAbby, I don\u2019t think you\u2019re the one who needs to apologize.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sebastian\u2019s eyes narrowed as he slid his mother a look.<\/p>\n

Then he looked back at Abigale and like he was chewing off ragged bits of rusty metal, he bit out, \u201cSorry.\u201d<\/p>\n

Without looking at anybody else, he turned to go.<\/p>\n

Zach, until that moment, hadn\u2019t said a word.\u00a0 But then, after a gentle squeeze on her shoulder, he eased around her.\u00a0 \u201cSebastian, kid\u2026you and me need to have a word.\u201d<\/p>\n

Abigale groaned.\u00a0 She knew that tone.<\/p>\n

Passing a hand over her face, she said, \u201cZach, just let it go.\u201d<\/p>\n

But it was like he didn\u2019t even hear her, and before she could try to go after him, Zane barred her way.\u00a0 \u201cLeave the two of them alone,\u201d he advised.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey don\u2019t need to be fighting at their brothers\u2019 party,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

A grin split his face.\u00a0 Thick brown hair tumbled into his eyes as he caught her in a hug and pulled her close.\u00a0 \u201cOh, now come on, Abby.\u00a0 Since when have we ever managed to have a single party or even a cookout without one of us getting mad about something?\u201d
