\u201cHow did you get it in here, anyway?\u00a0 I saw you lock it up.\u201d<\/p>\n

I smiled.\u00a0 \u201cUs trained killers have their tricks.\u201d<\/p>\n

And my sword was one of mine\u2026she had been my mother\u2019s sword. She would be there when I needed her, or if I thought I might. \u00a0I wouldn\u2019t be easily parted from her.<\/p>\n

\u201cPut it away,\u201d he ordered. \u201cNow.\u201d<\/p>\n

I pu\u00adlled her onto my lap.\u00a0 \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

The last time I\u2019d gone into the lair of one of the damned Alphas, I almost hadn\u2019t made it out alive.\u00a0 If he thought I\u2019d go into this one willingly and unarmed, he was out of his pretty skull.<\/p>\n

The door opened.<\/p>\n

Damon spun around and immediately bowed his head.<\/p>\n

I remained where I was.\u00a0 As far as they were concerned, I was just a human\u2014well, they did see me as a trained killer.\u00a0 At least they acknowledged that<\/em>, but I wasn\u2019t a shifter, and by Assembly law, I wasn\u2019t required to follow their stupid laws.\u00a0 Nor would I.<\/p>\n

So I stayed were I was, sword in my lap, and watched the lady of the cats came into the room.<\/p>\n

She was\u2026unexpected.<\/p>\n

Yes.\u00a0 Very unexpected. Diminutive and pale, her hair nearly as blonde as mine.\u00a0 Thick black lashes hid her eyes and her mouth was about as pink as it could possibly get and still be natural.\u00a0 Either she had a damn good hand without makeup or God had just been too kind.\u00a0 She was slender\u2014small waist, petite, but well-enough endowed that I had to wonder if she didn\u2019t use her ability to change shape to alter hers in other ways.\u00a0 Some of the stronger ones could do things like that for short periods of time.\u00a0 The Alpha definitely could do something like that.<\/p>\n

Pretty as a doll, I decided. And probably every bit as vapid.\u00a0 I couldn’t even get a read on whatever animal she was, although I knew she was cat.\u00a0 There was just…nothing there.<\/p>\n

It was almost as bad as looking at Jude, although I knew why I couldn’t read him.\u00a0 My ability to read people came from their souls. He just didn’t have one.<\/p>\n

That wasn’t the case here. Vampires lost their souls over time after they were bitten, losing them slowly over time.\u00a0 They didn’t just feed on blood–they fed on the psychic energy that came with it, and reveled on the punch of emotion that came with the feeding, since they lost their ability to feel with the death of their soul.<\/p>\n

This woman wasn’t a vampire.\u00a0 She was…inanimate.\u00a0 Kind of like a doll.\u00a0 Damon had more presence than she did, I remember thinking that.<\/p>\n

Then she turned to face me and the power of her gaze almost sent me crashing to the floor.<\/p>\n

I gripped my blade, harder, harder, until the grip damn near bruised my hand and it still wasn\u2019t enough.\u00a0 She moved and I moved just a breath later.\u00a0 It almost wasn\u2019t fast enough but I\u2019d had to rely on my instincts to survive the training of my grandmother and aunts.<\/p>\n

I was still holding my sword a moment later and Damon stood between us, his hands raised in that calming, easy gesture people so often used.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy lady, you want to speak with the investigator.\u00a0 I brought her so she could talk to you about Doyle.\u201d<\/p>\n

She backhanded him\u2014if I\u2019d ever needed the evidence of shapeshifter strength, I had it now.\u00a0 He was over six feet and I imagined he weighed two-fifty, at the least.\u00a0 The Alpha?\u00a0 She was small than I was.\u00a0 I was five foot five, and she looked to be about three or four inches shorter.\u00a0 Save for the boobs, she was fluff all over.<\/p>\n

But that single strike sent him flying across the room, crashing into one of the bubble-gum pink walls.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t stay there.\u00a0 Even as she came for me again, he was there.<\/p>\n

What the hell<\/em>\u2014<\/p>\n

\u201cMy Lady, you\u2019ll be very angry if you harm the one who can help you find Doyle,\u201d he said, and his voice had a soothing tone that seemed out of place.\u00a0 But then again, if he was trying to calm her down, the smart-ass mouth he showed with me wasn\u2019t the ideal, I figured.<\/p>\n

\u201cDamon, are you standing in my way?\u201d she asked.\u00a0 She had a lovely voice.\u00a0 It was like bells tinkling.<\/p>\n

Poetic. I was getting poetic in my near-death state.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m just following orders, My Lady,\u201d he said, bowing his head.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou followed orders by letting her bring a blade in here? To threaten me?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHow am I a threat?\u201d<\/p>\n

Damon shot me a dirty look.\u00a0 His left eye was black, his mouth was busted and blood tricked down his face.\u00a0 He was trashed, and he was pissed, and I guess I couldn\u2019t blame him.\u00a0 But I didn\u2019t look at him.\u00a0 Focusing on her, I asked again, \u201cHow am I a threat?\u00a0 I bring the weapons I normally carry on a job and if you weren\u2019t prepared for that, then I\u2019m sorry, but I don\u2019t do my job unarmed, especially not when I\u2019m working with shifters.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you implying I brought you here to harm you?\u201d<\/p>\n

Her head cocked to the side and I had the impression a snake getting ready to strike.\u00a0 Not a pleasant picture. If I lied, she\u2019d know.\u00a0 And if I lied right now, as pissed as she was\u2026damn it, why didn\u2019t anybody see fit to mention that the cat alpha was missing a few marbles?\u00a0 Of course, it wasn’t surprising consider how fucking nuts<\/em> all of them were.\u00a0 Maybe it was a pack thing and it all came from her<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Hmmm.\u00a0 Made sense.\u00a0 I understood now why I couldn’t read her.\u00a0 The pieces clicked into places and I figured it out.\u00a0 She wasn’t soulless.\u00a0 She was just a sociopath.<\/p>\n

Keeping my voice level, I shook my head.\u00a0 Mustn’t enrage the antisocial monster standing five feet away.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m not implying anything.\u00a0 I\u2019m treating this job the same I\u2019d treat any other. I go into it knowing nothing\u2014and that\u2019s the way I\u2019d prefer it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her gaze, pale, pale blue held mine.<\/p>\n

Then slowly, she nodded.\u00a0 When she looked away, I let myself breathe.<\/p>\n

\u201cDamon, look at your face\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

From the corner of my eye, I watched.\u00a0 She rose on the tips of her toes, touching his cheek, his nose, his bruised eye.\u00a0 \u201cOh, you poor thing.\u00a0 Does it hurt?\u201d<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t gape, but I wanted to.\u00a0 She\u2019d knocked him into a wall\u2026and she wanted to know if he hurt.<\/p>\n

But of course, instead of saying something honest like Yes, bitch, it hurts<\/em>, Damon just shrugged.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019ve had worse.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Ten minutes later, they were seated on the couch having tea and I was trying not to stare.<\/p>\n

Tea.<\/p>\n

For Pete’s sake.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you take sugar?\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at the small cup.\u00a0 I\u2019d rather not take it at all.\u00a0 \u201cPlease.\u201d<\/p>\n

Go meet more villains!<\/p>\n
