She jerked and backed away, unable to listen, unable to watch. \u201cI don\u2019t want to see this\u2014this is bullshit<\/em>. Gavin wouldn\u2019t have fucked around on me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re right.\u201d Jacob nodded. \u201cHe didn\u2019t. Not that night\u2014not since. He\u2019s kept himself faithful, hoping you\u2019d come back. But this isn\u2019t about what happened<\/em>. It\u2019s about what could<\/em> have happened.\u201d<\/p>\n

He nodded toward the street. \u201cWatch.\u201d<\/p>\n

The next few minutes passed in a blur of screams and fury. Trish had gone to kiss Gavin again. He had been pushing her away, that much Celine could see\u2026now<\/em>.<\/p>\n

But that night? The woman she had<\/em> been? Apparently all Celine had seen was another woman in her husband\u2019s arms.<\/p>\n

And by the time the police arrived, Trish was bleeding from her nose, clutching her belly, and Gavin was holding Celine away from the woman, even though the look in his eyes clearly said he didn\u2019t want to be touching her.<\/p>\n

\u201cHad you taken that other road, he would have moved out of the house two days later, filed for divorce within the week.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d Celine turned away and stalked down the street away from the house where she had lived with her husband. Away from whatever trick Jacob had conjured up to make her accept this bullshit life.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re not telling me that he divorced me for her<\/em>,\u201d she bit off as Jacob caught up with her.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. He divorced you because the two of you weren\u2019t happy together. You hadn\u2019t been for a long time. Trish only aggravated the matter.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are no buts<\/em>. You weren\u2019t happy. The two of you barely managed to co-exist together. You wanted children. He did not. He wanted to pursue a writing career and you were terrified it wouldn\u2019t happen. You had different dreams for your lives and somewhere along the way, you fell out of love.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWrong!\u201d She spun around and glared at Jacob. \u201cI still love him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is love, and there is in<\/em> love. Have you forgotten the difference?\u201d<\/p>\n

She sneered at him. \u201cWhat in the hell do you know about love, you damned iceberg?\u201d<\/p>\n

She never even saw him move. One moment, he was three feet away. And then he was only inches away, his long body, so lean and warm, caging hers in against something cool and metal\u2014a car? Truck? She didn\u2019t know, didn\u2019t care. One hand rested by her shoulder. The other cupped her chin.<\/p>\n

\u201cMore than you would think, sweet. Far more than you would think.\u201d Then his mouth was on hers.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

An iceberg.<\/p>\n

She thought he was an iceberg.<\/p>\n

Little fool.<\/p>\n

Her mouth was still under his, for the briefest moment. He knew it wouldn\u2019t last long, and he intended to make the most of it. She wanted to wither away and die, did she?<\/p>\n

Perhaps she needed to see just how much life<\/em> she still had inside her.<\/p>\n

Oh, but she was sweet\u2026he\u2019d known she would be. Her mouth was soft, even though she was still frozen with shock. Soft, and she tasted like soft, warm woman, cherries and Coke\u2026 She lived on Cherry Coke, it seemed. He could live on the taste of it on her, he supposed.<\/p>\n

Stroking his tongue along the curve of her lower lip, he teased her lips apart, delving inside the second he had an opportunity. He didn\u2019t believe in wasting those.<\/p>\n

Her fingers curled into the front of his coat and over the roaring of blood in his ears, he heard the soft, broken sound of her breath\u2026and even sweeter, the erratic beat of her heart. Her body wilted against his\u2014he felt the push of her breasts, the softness of her belly, the long lines of the body she treated so carelessly. There was wanting in her body, needing\u2026she wanted, she needed. Him<\/em>\u2026she wanted him<\/em>.<\/p>\n

For that moment\u2014he felt it.<\/p>\n

And then he felt her fist.<\/p>\n

He took that first punch, staggering back a little. Damn, she was strong. When she would have hit him again, he caught her hand, stopping the blow before it landed. \u201cDon\u2019t,\u201d he warned quietly.<\/p>\n

When he saw the tears in her eyes, though, he wished he\u2019d just let her hit him. Pound him bloody if it made her feel better.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy did you do that?\u201d She jerked her hand.<\/p>\n

Jacob let go, his heart aching.<\/p>\n

Her voice was shaking. Fuck, what had he done?<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy did you do that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re not dead, Celine. You need to quit wishing it on yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n

But he didn\u2019t think she even heard him. Celine, with a hand that trembled, touched her mouth. \u201cYou kissed me. Damn it, why did you kiss me?\u201d<\/p>\n

There was no chance for him to answer, because more yelling erupted from the house. Celine\u2019s voice, angry and hurt. And then there was Gavin\u2019s voice, tired\u2026just tired. There was no anger there. No anger, no hurt.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe stopped loving you, the fool,\u201d Jacob said quietly as she turned toward the sound of the voices. \u201cHe gave up on your marriage\u2014a long time ago, but you mourn for that life. A life where he didn\u2019t love you as you deserved.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf he didn\u2019t love me, he wouldn\u2019t still be grieving for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMany things inspire grief,\u201d Jacob said, turning to look back at her. The pain in her dark eyes all but put him on his knees. He\u2019d do anything to take it from her. Anything. \u201cLove. Anger.\u201d<\/p>\n

He moved to stand next to her and because he couldn\u2019t stop himself, he touched his hand to the dark strands of her hair. \u201cGuilt.\u201d<\/p>\n

She flinched.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe cared for you, yes. But that isn\u2019t love. It is guilt that makes him cling to your memory, Celine. If you would just let yourself look, you would see it.\u201d<\/p>\n
