It’s about time to start teasing…ah. \u00a0Sharing snippets. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

Keep in mind, guys, this trilogy works best when read in order. \u00a0No major spoilers in the snippet, though. \u00a0Maybe a minor one or two. Snippet is<\/em>\u00a0from my editing copy so it might have typos.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The house was silent\u2026completely and utterly silent, save for the slow, measured sound of Law Reilly\u2019s breathing as he lifted the bar up, lowered it, lifted.<\/p>\n

Sweat rolled down his brow, along his arms.\u00a0 He ignored it, focusing on the weighted bar.\u00a0 Just like he ignored the trembling in his arms\u2014especially in his right.\u00a0 That arm, still trying to heal from that bad break, didn\u2019t seem as strong as it should be, and by the time he was done with the third set of reps, his muscles were quivering, all but begging for a rest.<\/p>\n

He ignored them, moved to the next set of exercises, and the next. \u00a0\u00a0It wasn\u2019t until he\u2019d worked his body into a numb state of exhaustion that he let himself leave the gym he\u2019d set up in his basement.\u00a0 On his way down the hall, he passed by a closed door.<\/p>\n

Months ago, it had been his office.<\/p>\n

Now, it was nothing but unused space.<\/p>\n

A while back, he\u2019d finally admitted the obvious and moved his books and everything else out of the room, turning his living room into his office.\u00a0 Wasn\u2019t like he had a lot of company out here anyway.<\/p>\n

There was just no way he could work in that room again\u2014that room where a man had died, slowly, painfully.\u00a0 Although the professional team had gotten the blood out of the floor, although he\u2019d redecorated, even put down a new floor, he couldn\u2019t look at the room without seeing it the way it had been that night.\u00a0 Without seeing the blood.<\/p>\n

Shit, there were days when he didn\u2019t even wanted to live in this house\u2014it wasn\u2019t just the office, but the house<\/em>.\u00a0 But Law wasn\u2019t about to give in to that\u2014wouldn\u2019t let the bastard win that battle.<\/p>\n

He\u2019d keep his damn house, but the office\u2026no.\u00a0 He wasn\u2019t fighting that one. He couldn\u2019t stand to go in there\u2014even though it no longer looked anything like it had looked all those months ago.\u00a0 Law still couldn\u2019t look at that room without seeing blood.<\/p>\n

Without remembering how a guy he\u2019d known in elementary school had killed a cop in there, then tried to kill Law, and Hope.\u00a0 Shit, there were days when he thought if he had any sense at all, he would tear this damn house down, build a new one.<\/p>\n

Screw tearing it down\u2014burn it, and salt the earth, make sure no demons from the past could rise to haunt them.\u00a0 Then he\u2019d move to Fiji, buy a shack on the beach and write from there.<\/p>\n

But he was too fucking stubborn to do that.\u00a0 Too stubborn, too determined.<\/p>\n

And he knew the demons would still be there anyway.<\/p>\n

The demons lived in his memories, not in the house, not in the earth.\u00a0 He couldn\u2019t eradicate them from his memory, so he\u2019d just have to deal with them, live with them.<\/p>\n

Those memories weren\u2019t going to win, damn it.\u00a0 They weren\u2019t.<\/p>\n

Joe was dead, Hope was safe and she was happier than she\u2019d ever been in her life.\u00a0 It was over.\u00a0 Completely over.<\/p>\n

He\u2019d just started up the steps when the phone rang.<\/p>\n

His muscles turned to lead as he turned to stare. It was late.\u00a0 There had been a time when late calls wouldn\u2019t faze him but after the past year, it was hard to ignore the dread creeping through him.\u00a0 Hard to ignore the worry, the fear.<\/p>\n

Not too many people would be calling him.\u00a0 Not too many people had his number.\u00a0 Hope and Remy.\u00a0 Lena and Ezra.\u00a0 His agent. A few friends.\u00a0 That was about it\u2014and none of them would call him this late unless it was an emergency.<\/p>\n

Scowling, he moved to the phone, stared at the caller ID.<\/p>\n

Virginia.\u00a0 Did he know anybody in Virginia?<\/p>\n

The machine picked up and he stood there, dumbly, as a voice rolled out.\u00a0 Low and smooth, soft and sexy as black velvet draped over a woman\u2019s nude body.<\/p>\n

\u201cHello.\u00a0 I\u2019m\u2026looking for Law Reilly.\u00a0 My name is Nia Hollister.\u00a0 I\u2026ah, we met a few months ago\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Yeah.\u00a0 He hadn\u2019t forgotten.\u00a0 They\u2019d met the day she accused him of killing her cousin.\u00a0 The day she\u2019d punched him, drawn a gun on him\u2014not exactly the sort of woman a guy was going to forget.<\/p>\n

Without realizing what he was doing, he reached for the phone.<\/p>\n

\u201cHello.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAhh\u2026Mr. Reilly?\u201d<\/p>\n

He just waited.<\/p>\n

\u201cAh\u2026hello.\u00a0 This\u2026okay, this is awkward.\u00a0 My name is Nia Hollister.\u00a0 We met a few months ago\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI remember.\u201d\u00a0 Short, silken, dark hair.\u00a0 Big gold eyes.\u00a0 A mouth that he would have given his right arm to taste.\u00a0 Long legs.\u00a0 Attitude.\u00a0 Grief.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0And a gun\u2026mustn\u2019t forget that gun, or the fact that she\u2019d come onto his property ready to kill him, and Hope, if she\u2019d decided they had something to do with her cousin\u2019s death.<\/p>\n

Stupid, he knew, being that hung up on a woman with that kind of reckless disregard.\u00a0 But he couldn\u2019t help himself, couldn\u2019t stop thinking about her, even months later.<\/p>\n

Even now he found himself wondering what that mouth of hers would feel like pressed against his.\u00a0 How she would taste.\u00a0 How she would feel if he pressed her up against a wall, then pressed himself against her\u2026<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah. For some reason, that doesn\u2019t surprise me,\u201d Nia muttered, her voice low and soft.\u00a0 Then she cleared her throat.\u00a0 \u201cLook, I\u2019m sorry to be calling so late.\u00a0 I just wanted to\u2026well\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Her voice trailed off.<\/p>\n

Law cocked a brow and leaned back against the wall.\u00a0 \u201cYou wanted to what?\u201d he asked when her silence stretched from a few seconds into nearly a minute.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2026shit.\u00a0 Has anything else, um, weird happened in Ash since well, you know, that shithead died?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWeird.\u201d\u00a0 Law ran his tongue along his teeth and tried to get his brain to think about something beyond<\/em> the physical images.\u00a0 But he wasn\u2019t having much luck.\u00a0 \u201cDefine weird.\u201d<\/p>\n

She muttered under her breath and then abruptly said, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 Forget it.\u201d<\/p>\n

And just like that, she hung up.<\/p>\n
