She was still standing there, dazed, when Law came into the kitchen about two minutes after the front door closed.<\/p>\n

Still standing there, with her hand touching her lips, and her heart racing.<\/p>\n

Remy had just kissed her.<\/p>\n

And right before he had lifted his head, he\u2019d whispered, \u201cI\u2019ve wanted to do that from the first second I laid eyes on you<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHey.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shaken, she looked up and saw Law standing by the island, staring at her, his face drawn tight in a worried scowl.\u00a0 \u201cYou okay there?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cUm\u2026I\u2026I\u2019m not sure.\u201d<\/p>\n

He leaned back against the counter, assuming almost the same pose Remy had stood in just minutes earlier.\u00a0 Hope closed her eyes and then immediately wished she hadn\u2019t, because she could see that image in her mind, the way his shirt had stretched across his shoulders, the way the light glinted off his hair.<\/p>\n

Then she found herself thinking about how he\u2019d stared into her eyes as he\u2019d lowered his head and kissed her\u2026<\/p>\n

\u201cHope?\u201d<\/p>\n

Gulping, she opened her eyes and stared at Law.<\/p>\n

\u201cRemy kissed me.\u201d<\/p>\n

If she\u2019d expected Law to be shocked, well\u2026she was expecting too much. \u00a0All he did was lift a brow and fold his arms over his chest.\u00a0 \u201cOkay.\u00a0 So is that a problem for you?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA problem?\u201d\u00a0 She shoved a hand through her hair and shook her head.\u00a0 \u201cDamn it, Law.\u00a0 He kissed me!\u00a0 A week ago he was out here grilling you about me and today he thinks it\u2019s okay to kiss<\/em> me?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cActually, a week ago, he wasn\u2019t grilling<\/em> me about anything.\u201d\u00a0 Law\u2019s mouth softened in a smile.\u00a0 \u201cHe just wanted to\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

She grimaced.\u00a0 \u201cFind out things he had no right finding out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Law sighed.\u00a0 \u201cHope, he already had most of it figured it.\u00a0 He just wanted to make\u2026hell.\u00a0 Look, cut him some slack.\u00a0 The guy was in one shitty place\u2014I get the feeling he was\u2026\u201d He scowled, a dull red flush climbing up his cheeks.\u00a0 \u201cDamn it, this is like giving a kid sister dating advice or something.\u00a0 Look, I think he\u2019s been attracted to you like from the get-go, but can you figure out where that put him?\u00a0 Whether we like<\/em> it or not, somebody did a damn good job trying to set you up and I hate it like hell, but what kind of man would be if he turned a blind eye to his job just because he thought the girl involved was cute?\u201d<\/p>\n

Hope blushed and looked away.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m not\u2026\u201d then she stopped herself.\u00a0 The hell she wasn\u2019t mad about it.\u00a0 But she understood what Law was getting at.\u00a0 \u201cI understand he had a job to do\u2014I do. I don\u2019t have to like<\/em> it, but I understand it.\u00a0 Still, this is giving me whiplash.\u201d \u00a0Looking down, she stared at the healing scars on her wrists.<\/p>\n

Gingerly, she touched one, winced at the lingering pain.\u00a0 She\u2019d carry those scars for life, forever carry that reminder that somebody hadn\u2019t just tried to kill her, but they\u2019d tried to do it in a way that had made the past two years of her life a lie.\u00a0 So what if she\u2019d spent them running\u2014she\u2019d left her husband, that bastard who\u2019d tried so hard to destroy her?<\/p>\n

She was trying to be strong\u2026and these marks were done to make her look like a coward.<\/p>\n

\u201cLaw, I don\u2019t know if I\u2019m up for this.\u00a0 I\u2019m just\u2026I\u2019m so confused,\u201d she murmured.<\/p>\n

Heaving out a sigh, he lifted a hand.\u00a0 She placed hers in it and he tugged her close, tucking her up against his chest.<\/p>\n
