I quit\u2014<\/p>\n

Taylorjerked his head back as she said that. Then he shook his head. She couldn\u2019t. He knew Dez, knew how she needed\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. fuck. Yes, he knew how she needed what she did. It wasn\u2019t a job for her\u2014it was a need.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t quit,\u201d he said quietly. \u201cYou and I both know how much you need your work\u2014we know what it does to you when you don\u2019t work.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dez\u2019s mouth twisted in a bitter, ugly smile. \u201cObviously we don\u2019t or you wouldn\u2019t be pushing me out for three months because you can\u2019t deal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alarm screamed in his head as she reached down, pulled out her ID, her weapon. Fuck\u2014<\/p>\n

\u201cDesiree, be reasonable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lashes swooped low over her eyes and she murmured, \u201cThat\u2019s exactly what I\u2019m doing. I\u2019m not taking three months\u2014double the time the doctor said I needed\u2014and hell, I can talk to ghosts just fine without hurting my neck. I don\u2019t even need six weeks. I\u2019ll go insane if I spend three months away from what I need to do. Since you won\u2019t let me do it here, I\u2019ll do it on my own.\u201d<\/p>\n

She slammed her shield, her ID, her weapon on his desk.<\/p>\n

He caught her wrist. \u201cDon\u2019t do this, damn it.\u201d She couldn\u2019t leave\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. even as he thought maybe it was for the best\u2014for him. Yeah, it might be better for him, but it would be hell for her. She needed this. Shit. What had he done? She couldn\u2019t leave.<\/p>\n

\u201cGive me a reason why I shouldn\u2019t.\u201d Her eyes, dark and soft, bore into his, challenging.<\/p>\n

Something hovered on the tip of his tongue. But instead of exploring that, he gritted out, \u201cBecause you\u2019ll regret walking away from your job.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dez shook her head. \u201cI didn\u2019t walk. You shut me out.\u201d Her eyes lingered on his face, and then she reached up, touched his cheek.<\/p>\n

His heart slammed against his ribs and he had to fight the urge not to nuzzle that hand, not to grab her, beg her not to leave. Fuck\u2014not seeing her? Then, even that paled.<\/p>\n

Away from here, how would she get what she needed? How would she get enough? The voices, her ghosts, they\u2019d drive her mad.<\/p>\n

As she turned away from him and started to the door, he came out from behind the desk. \u201cYou can\u2019t walk away from this team, Dez. I won\u2019t allow it,\u201d he said, forcing his voice to be flat and cold\u2014no emotion, damn it, because letting something other than his head speak was what had caused this. No emotion\u2014nothing but logic. Nothing.<\/p>\n

Dez paused at the door and looked back at him. She lifted a brow at him. \u201cYou won\u2019t allow it,\u201d she murmured, cocking her head. Then she sighed and opened the door. \u201cSugar, you just don\u2019t seem to get the picture here. You don\u2019t have a choice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Their eyes met, held, steely blue on darkest brown. She was the one to look away first.<\/p>\n

\u201cGood-bye.\u201d<\/p>\n
