{"id":28323,"date":"2011-12-12T08:00:36","date_gmt":"2011-12-12T13:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/?p=28323"},"modified":"2011-12-12T10:16:40","modified_gmt":"2011-12-12T15:16:40","slug":"giving-back","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/2011\/12\/giving-back\/","title":{"rendered":"Giving back&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>December isn&#8217;t always the easiest month for a lot of people. \u00a0My family is blessed. \u00a0We&#8217;ve got a roof over our heads, we&#8217;ve got the money to buy our groceries, pay our bills&#8230;and my guy &amp; I can buy presents for our family without hitting the credit cards (usually).<\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t always the case. \u00a0There was a time when I&#8217;d been pretty sick-back when I was working as a nurse, had some health crap, had to take some time of from work, and we were just broke. I didn&#8217;t have the money to buy groceries and if it wasn&#8217;t for some friends at church&#8230;well. \u00a0I know what it&#8217;s like to be broke. \u00a0I know what it&#8217;s like to wonder how you&#8217;re going to put food on the table. I&#8217;ve been there.<\/p>\n<p>I try to do what I can to give back throughout the year, and do a little more during the Christmas season. \u00a0We&#8217;ve got local things where you can buy a family a meal for Christmas- I do that, and we usually sponsor a child from the Salvation Army Angel Tree. \u00a0I send books to the soldiers through my friend who helps out with the SOS groups.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/dreamstimefree_1273634-300x1981.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-28324 alignleft\" title=\"Giving back\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/dreamstimefree_1273634-300x1981-150x150.jpg?resize=150%2C150\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/dreamstimefree_1273634-300x1981.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/dreamstimefree_1273634-300x1981.jpg?zoom=2&amp;resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>I firmly believe that when you give&#8230;it comes back to you. \u00a0Although that&#8217;s not\u00a0<em>why<\/em>\u00a0you should give&#8230;the world is much smaller than we realize sometimes and when we help somebody, whether it&#8217;s a stranger or a friend, we&#8217;re doing something that helps in a very deep way&#8230;there&#8217;s that saying, <em>Nobody can help everybody, but everybody can help somebody<\/em>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Whether it&#8217;s a monetary sort of help, a donation of time&#8230;every time I&#8217;ve given back, every time our family gives, we get blessed.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve had somebody say (paraphrasing), &#8220;It&#8217;s just too big a job. \u00a0There&#8217;s too much suffering and you can&#8217;t change the whole world.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But that&#8217;s bull. \u00a0We can change the world. \u00a0We start small, and we help one person. \u00a0Because when we help one person, we&#8217;ve changed that person&#8217;s world. \u00a0When 100 people help 100 people&#8230;the world has changed for 100 people. \u00a0When 1000 help 1000&#8230;when 1 million help 1 million&#8230;that&#8217;s how we can change the world. \u00a0Maybe it&#8217;s not world peace, maybe it&#8217;s not the cure for cancer or AIDS. \u00a0But if we take steps where we can to\u00a0alleviate\u00a0suffering, it&#8217;s a start. \u00a0Even in just small ways&#8230;a donation to a local food pantry, sponsoring a child at Christmas, volunteering your time to a local school or nursing home or sending letters to those serving over seas.<\/p>\n<p>After all, the world would be a pretty miserable place if <em>nobody<\/em>\u00a0tried to help <em>anybody<\/em>\u00a0because it was &#8216;too big a job&#8217;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>December isn&#8217;t always the easiest month for a lot of people. \u00a0My family is blessed. \u00a0We&#8217;ve got a roof over our heads, we&#8217;ve got the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/2011\/12\/giving-back\/\" class=\"more-link\"><span class=\"screen-reader-text\"> &#8220;Giving back&#8230;&#8221;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":28324,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"rop_custom_images_group":[],"rop_custom_messages_group":[],"rop_publish_now":"initial","rop_publish_now_accounts":{"facebook_10161045129738658_54762468447":""},"rop_publish_now_history":[],"rop_publish_now_status":"pending","_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_bluesky_dont_syndicate":"","_bluesky_syndication_accounts":"","_bluesky_syndication_text":"","_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":false,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"highway","default_image_id":0,"font":"","enabled":false},"version":2},"jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[542],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-28323","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-blog"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
