It was the woods\u2014night dark and thick with underbrush that grabbed at him, tripped him up.\u00a0 When he fell, he landed in a puddle of blood.<\/p>\n

Her blood.<\/p>\n

Lena\u2019s blood.<\/p>\n

Lena\u2019s face shifted, reformed\u2026and it was the woman.\u00a0 The woman found at Law\u2019s, her battered, ruined face staring lifelessly up at the sky.<\/p>\n

He dreamed, knew he dreamed, but he couldn\u2019t make himself wake up.<\/p>\n

Even as the woman morphed from the dead woman to his lover to his partner, over and over in an unending circle, he was helpless, trapped, unable to stop it, unable to change it\u2014<\/p>\n

\u201cDamn it, wake up!\u201d<\/p>\n

Breath ripping out of him in sobs, Ezra tore out of the dream and sat up, staring at the pale oval of Lena\u2019s face.<\/p>\n

\u201cShit.\u00a0 Fuck.\u201d<\/p>\n

A cold, nasty sweat drenched him and he fought his way out of the blankets, stumbled over to the doorway, hit the light switch.\u00a0 Lena sat in the bed, staring in his direction, her sightless eyes huge and frightened.\u00a0 She had the sheet clutched between her bare breasts, her hand balled up into a fist.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you okay?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBad dream,\u201d he said, his voice rusty.\u00a0 He leaned against the wall, rubbing at the knotted muscles in his leg.<\/p>\n

\u201cBad dream?\u201d she echoed.\u00a0 She gave him a faint smile.\u00a0 \u201cEzra, when I dream about waking up naked in front of my high school English class while giving a report on women\u2019s rights, that is a bad dream.\u00a0 What you were having\u2026I don\u2019t think bad dream describes it.\u201d<\/p>\n

She held out a hand.\u00a0 \u201cCome back to bed?\u201d<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t want to. He was shaking, like a leaf, he realized, and half sick.\u00a0 But at the sight of her slender hand, reaching out to him\u2026well, walking away was one thing he just couldn\u2019t do.<\/p>\n

Swallowing against the tightness in his throat, he walked stiffly over to the bed and sank down on it.\u00a0 Lena shifted around and when he lay down, she guided his head to her lap.\u00a0 \u201cYour leg is bothering you,\u201d she said quietly.<\/p>\n

Ezra didn\u2019t answer.\u00a0 Mind over matter.\u00a0 Psycho-babble shit.\u00a0 If he ignored the leg, didn\u2019t think about the dreams\u2026<\/p>\n

\u201cTell me what you were dreaming about,\u201d she said softly, combing a hand through his hair.<\/p>\n

No.<\/p>\n

That was the last think he wanted to do.<\/p>\n
