You&#8217;d be better off talking to a nurse&#8230;&#8221; or something like that.<\/p>\n<p>And I mentioned I was a nurse.<\/p>\n<p>I was kind of brushed off and that&#8217;s fine.<\/p>\n<p>Now it&#8217;s not a secret that I don&#8217;t like medical romances. \u00a0I just about <em>loathe<\/em>\u00a0them. \u00a0It&#8217;s also not a secret that I&#8217;m a nurse.<\/p>\n<p>Some people are surprised when I outright admit that I hate medical romances.<\/p>\n<p>Why do I hate them?<\/p>\n<p>Easy. \u00a0Too many people get the easiest crap wrong.<\/p>\n<p>They don&#8217;t touch on confidentiality. \u00a0They have all sorts of clandestine little hookups happening. \u00a0It&#8217;s always rush rush rush. Or it&#8217;s this. Or it&#8217;s that. \u00a0There&#8217;s little focus giving to the most mundane thing, but something that&#8217;s absolutely <em>crucial<\/em>\u00a0in the medical field and if you&#8217;re writing a medical romance? \u00a0It damn well better be at least addressed, even in an offhand manner or those of us in the know are going to know one crucial thing-<em>the writer didn&#8217;t research<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve got a heroine who is a nurse or a doctor and she mentions her patient&#8217;s current troubles to her friend? \u00a0<strong><em>Big Fat N.O.<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 Patient confidentiality breach in the extreme.<\/p>\n<p>Talking about said patient outside of work? \u00a0When it doesn&#8217;t pertain to care? \u00a0<em><strong>Big Fat N.O.<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0These are things that can get health care providers <em>sued<\/em>. \u00a0And I&#8217;m not just talking the doctors. \u00a0I&#8217;m talking the nurses, the lady who dumped the trash, <em>all of them<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Having a doctor give information about the patient&#8217;s health to the patient&#8217;s husband after the patient was in a car wreck? \u00a0Did the patient sign the paperwork? \u00a0If the patient didn&#8217;t sign the paperwork or if it&#8217;s not mentioned, I can tell you, I&#8217;m going to wonder. \u00a0<em>Just being the husband<\/em>\u00a0isn&#8217;t enough anymore. \u00a0The <em>patient<\/em>\u00a0determines who gets that information and they can decide the husband doesn&#8217;t have access.<\/p>\n<p>Do your nurses and doctors knock when they go in and out of the room? Do they discuss the expected plan of care <em>with<\/em>\u00a0the patient before hand or just let it rip?<\/p>\n<p>The health care field isn&#8217;t what it used to be and these are just some of the inner workings.<\/p>\n<p>Having a doctor think his patient&#8217;s sexy and hey, maybe they can hook up? \u00a0This is such a<em>\u00a0big, big, big <\/em>bad&#8230;so many lines gets crossed and so many ethical issues there&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The nonstop hookups between the nurses and the doctors and the nurses and the nurses and the whoevers&#8230;I can honestly tell you, it doesn&#8217;t tend to work like that. \u00a0<em>Occasionally<\/em>. \u00a0You see it\u00a0<em>occasionally<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>You want to watch ER? \u00a0Watch it for fun. \u00a0Watch it for <em>inspiration<\/em>&#8230;maybe. \u00a0Watch it to get an idea of some of the medical lingo. \u00a0But, please, please, please <em>do not watch it for research<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>RWA is <em>full <\/em>of people in the medical field and we&#8217;re no more busy than anybody else. \u00a0Find somebody who can answer a few questions. \u00a0Talk to nurses. \u00a0Maybe you can find one to be your beta reader&#8230;that wouldn&#8217;t be a bad idea, because if you send bits and pieces off as you&#8217;re writing, you can fix the small problems before they become major plot issues.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was at a conference last week&#8230;had a lot of fun.
