{"id":27100,"date":"2011-08-13T08:00:40","date_gmt":"2011-08-13T12:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/?p=27100"},"modified":"2011-08-11T15:03:48","modified_gmt":"2011-08-11T19:03:48","slug":"saturday-snippets-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/2011\/08\/saturday-snippets-4\/","title":{"rendered":"Saturday Snippets&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m doing something a little new on Saturdays&#8230;it&#8217;s a group sort of thing, so you can ramble over to the other author blogs and check out their snippets, too. \u00a0\ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>There are themes and this theme is&#8230;something <em>public&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This is from <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/?page_id=308\">Broken<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/broken-30.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-10786\" style=\"border-width: 3px; border-color: black; border-style: solid;\" title=\"broken-30\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/broken-30-199x300.jpg?resize=199%2C300\" alt=\"\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/broken-30.jpg?resize=199%2C300&amp;ssl=1 199w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/broken-30.jpg?w=495&amp;ssl=1 495w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cTold you\u2026I got in somebody\u2019s way.\u201d He jerked a shoulder in a restless shrug.\u00a0 \u201cThe man wasn\u2019t happy with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou got in somebody\u2019s way.\u201d\u00a0 She should have just let it go at that, but now she was even more curious.\u00a0 The faint smirk on his lips only added to her curiosity, too.\u00a0 It was like he was amused over the fact that he\u2019d gotten hit over being in somebody\u2019s way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah.\u201d\u00a0 The smirk widened a little and a wicked light starting to gleam in his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome on, Quinn.\u201d\u00a0 Sara rolled her eyes. \u201cThere\u2019s more to it than that.\u00a0 I don\u2019t see you as the kind of guy somebody would hit because you got in their way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe he didn\u2019t like my attitude, or what I told him he could do with his complaints.\u00a0 Which was basically to fu\u2026uh\u2026shove it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sara snickered.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019ve heard the word before, Quinn.\u201d The restaurant was fairly quiet, but she kept her voice low.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy dad heard me talking that way around a lady, I\u2019d never hear the end of it,\u201d he said with another one of those restless shrugs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour dad, but not your mom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His lip curled in a sneer.\u00a0 Something cold and flat flashed through his eyes.\u00a0 But his voice was level as he said, \u201cNo.\u00a0 Not my mom.\u00a0 She\u2019s dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh\u2026I\u2019m sorry.\u201d Looking down, she studied the scarred wooden surface of the table.\u00a0 \u201cMy mom died a few years ago.\u00a0 I still miss her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t miss my mother, Sara.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t have a good relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words were so flatly stated, so cold, so unemotional.\u00a0 And his eyes, they were like winter ice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d she said again.\u00a0 What else could she say?\u00a0 She hurt for him, though. There was a story there, and it wasn\u2019t a happy one.<\/p>\n<p>Quinn sighed.\u00a0 It was a heavy sound and when she looked back up, those wounds she\u2019d glimpsed in his eyes were there again\u2014naked misery, pain, loneliness.\u00a0 He scrubbed his hands over his face and then swore, wincing as he gingerly touched his bruised cheekbone.\u00a0 \u201cShit, I forgot about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t see how.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been hit a time or two.\u00a0 Guess you get used to it after a while.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sara had her doubts about that\u2014she wasn\u2019t sure anybody could ever get used to having a mark put on them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t talk about my mother.\u00a0 I don\u2019t like to.\u00a0 I don\u2019t like thinking about her\u2026and I don\u2019t want you apologizing over any of it,\u201d he said, his voice flat and hard.<\/p>\n<p>The ache in her heart grew.\u00a0 Although he wouldn\u2019t share any more than that, Sara sensed of a world of pain hidden behind those emotionless words.\u00a0 But she knew how miserable it was to talk about painful subjects, especially when you wanted nothing more than to forget.\u00a0 Forcing a smile, she reached across the table and brushed her fingers over the back of his hand.\u00a0 \u201cThen we won\u2019t talk about her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ice in his gaze melted away, replaced by an intensity that had her heart skipping a few beats.\u00a0 Eyes hooded, he studied her.\u00a0 He turned his hand over and caught hers, twined their fingers together. From under his lashes, he studied her and the look in his eyes was hot.\u00a0 Hot enough to sear, scorch, burn\u2026 He lifted her hand and pressed his lips to the back of it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat would you like to talk about?\u201d he whispered, his voice low and rough.<\/p>\n<p>Part of her wanted to say <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">You<\/span><\/em>.\u00a0 If he didn\u2019t want to talk about his mother, that was fine.\u00a0 She wanted to know more about him.\u00a0 But there were problems with that.\u00a0 That kind of conversation tended to be two-way.\u00a0 He\u2019d expect her to talk about herself.\u00a0 She couldn\u2019t do that.<\/p>\n<p>Even though she had an entire story memorized, nice, simple, and pat, she didn\u2019t want to give it to him.\u00a0 She didn\u2019t want to lie to him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho says we have to talk about anything?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His lips trailed over her skin, left a sizzling, hot trail in its wake.\u00a0 \u201cAlways thought talking was overrated myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hell.\u00a0 He wasn\u2019t kidding.\u00a0 Licking her lips, Sara tried not to whimper as he turned her wrist over and kissed the soft, sensitive flesh on the inside.<\/p>\n<p>Shooting her a look from under his lashes, Quinn opened his lips and touched his tongue to her skin.\u00a0 She stared at him, her eyes half-closed, the warm velvety brown hot and sweet\u2014melted chocolate.\u00a0 Looking into her eyes made him think of melted chocolate, sweet and rich.<\/p>\n<p>Up until recently, he hadn\u2019t ever had much of a sweet tooth, but damn if he didn\u2019t want a better taste of her.\u00a0 \u00a0Raking his teeth over the soft skin of her wrist, he said gruffly, \u201cYou really shouldn\u2019t look at me like that in a public place, Sara.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook at you how?\u201d she asked, her voice almost as hoarse as his own.\u00a0 She blinked at him, looking a little dazed.<\/p>\n<p>Before he could answer, they heard a crash off in the distance, followed by the sound of breaking glass.\u00a0 As a few of the customers in the restaurant started to applaud, Quinn leaned back against the seat and slouched down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike that,\u201d he muttered.\u00a0 He shifted a little on the seat, uncomfortable.\u00a0 But there wasn\u2019t a whole lot he could to do about it, not sitting in a public place, wearing a pair of jeans and sporting an erection so hard, it hurt.\u00a0 \u201cThe way you\u2019re looking at me now.\u00a0 It could get us both in all kinds of trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind of trouble?\u201d Then she blushed, almost like she wished she hadn\u2019t asked.<\/p>\n<p>Quinn smiled.<\/p>\n<address>\u00a0<\/address>\n<address>Others doing the snippets&#8230;<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/maricarr.com\/?page_id=11\"> Mari Carr<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/mckennajeffries.com\/blog\/\">McKenna Jeffries<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/taigecrenshaw.com\/blog\">Taige Crenshaw<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.laceysavage.com\/blog\">Lacey Savage<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sashawhite.net\">Sasha White<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bethannmason.com\/blog\"> Beth-Ann Mason<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.deniseagnew.com\/blog\">Denise A.
