His voice intruded on her drifting thoughts.\u00a0 His eyes narrowed on her face then he grinned, shook his head.\u00a0 “You’re getting ready to zone out on me again.”<\/p>\n

“Sorry.”\u00a0 She shrugged and lowered her feet back to the ground, looking off to the side so she didn’t keep looking back at him and either trying to picture him in front of a camera-or remembering him over her body, that beautiful face so close to hers, his dark eyes rapt on her face…<\/p>\n

You’re obsessed, babe.\u00a0 O.B.S.E.S.S.E.D.\u00a0 You need to get away from him before this gets out of hand.<\/em><\/p>\n

With that thought in mind, she glanced at the clock, she asked, “You think they’ll let me talk to Renee for a few minutes?”<\/p>\n

He shrugged.\u00a0 “Let you?\u00a0 Probably not, but I can probably stall them for a few minutes, if she’s not asleep.\u00a0 There aren’t any serious injuries, but she’d pretty banged up and they gave her some pain medicine a while ago.”\u00a0 Shoving out of the seat, he offered her a hand.\u00a0 “Come on.\u00a0 We’ll go look.\u00a0 If she’s awake, you can slip inside for a minute and I’ll fend off the nurses.”<\/p>\n

She acted like she didn’t see it, rising and edging around him.<\/p>\n

“I hadn’t realized you kept in touch with Renee.”<\/p>\n

Sliding him a look from the corner of her eye, she shrugged.\u00a0 “It wasn’t exactly a planned thing.\u00a0\u00a0 We both came home for Christmas later that year, ran into each other at the store.\u00a0 Starting talking…”\u00a0 Lacey sighed.\u00a0 “Started talking and we couldn’t stop.\u00a0 That night totally screwed with our heads.”<\/p>\n

He was quiet, a frown on his face.They came to a halt in front of a curtained-off section and Seth peeked inside.\u00a0 “She’s asleep,” he murmured, blocking her with his body.<\/p>\n

Lacey moved past him to peek inside for herself.\u00a0 Then she stopped in her tracks, her jaw dropping\u00a0 in stunned surprise.<\/p>\n

Damn.<\/p>\n

Deacon and Renee.<\/p>\n

She’d thought she glimpsed something between them earlier.\u00a0 But it had been sheer chaos, cops, paramedics, all sorts of curious people emerging from their houses to gawk.\u00a0 She hadn’t had that much time to really put two and two together.<\/p>\n

It was as clear as day, though.\u00a0 An unconscious smile curled her lips and she glanced at Seth before looking back at Renee.\u00a0 The other woman was asleep all right.\u00a0 And laying pressed up against her body was Deacon Cross.\u00a0 Torso propped up, weight braced on one elbow, he stared down at Renee.\u00a0 Lacey had a feeling he’d been doing just that, staring at Renee, for quite a while.<\/p>\n

In her head, something clicked.\u00a0 Lacey knew about the guy Renee had dated in college-knew about the kinky stuff Renee was experimenting with.\u00a0 She’d worried about her friend for a while, just because everything Renee was getting into seemed so-not<\/em> Renee.<\/p>\n

Likewise, Lacey also knew about Deacon.\u00a0 He’d always been big on being in charge when it came to sex when they’d started sleeping together, a little too confident for the typical teenaged boy.\u00a0 His appetites had gotten darker.\u00a0 Even though he had been able to make her feel so damned hot, he had ended up pushing her past a line she was comfortable with.\u00a0 The more he needed, the less she could give.<\/p>\n

During Christmas break her freshman year, they’d just decided to walk away.<\/p>\n

Deacon and Renee.<\/em><\/p>\n

She snickered.\u00a0 “I should have seen this coming.”<\/p>\n

Deacon glanced up at her from the bed.\u00a0 A grin tugged at his lips and then it faded as he once more focused his attention on Renee.<\/p>\n

Like she was the only thing in the world that existed-no.\u00a0 Like she was<\/em> his world.<\/p>\n

How did that happen so fast?<\/p>\n

Longing moved through her as she watched for another minute.\u00a0 She wanted that.<\/p>\n

Not Deacon-he had been the first guy she’d ever gotten serious over-hell, actually, he was the only<\/em> guy she’d ever been serious over.\u00a0 But she hadn’t loved him.<\/p>\n

He might have loved her, probably had, but he hadn’t ever looked at her like that.\u00a0 Never looked at her the way he looked at Renee like she was the center of his universe.<\/p>\n

That<\/em> was what she longed for.<\/p>\n
