Okay, guys. \u00a0Somebody drew my attention to this blog post by\u00a0Ashley March<\/a> and the way Facebook does things is seriously going to affect how authors (or anybody) can do contests there.<\/p>\n

She hits on the rules Facebook has laid out for contests done via Facebook. \u00a0And it makes giving away\u00a0anything<\/em>, even a $2.99 ebook, complicated as I dunno what. \u00a0The rules, copied from Facebook’s page<\/a>:<\/p>\n

1)\u00a0May NOT hold a contest on our Facebook pages<\/strong> unless it is administered through a third party app and is placed on a unique page tab or canvas page.<\/p>\n

2)\u00a0Must disclose<\/strong> that participants are giving information to us and not to Facebook;\u00a0must acknowledge<\/strong> to participants that the contest is not sponsored, endorsed, or associated with Facebook; and\u00a0must have participants somehow acknowledge that they release <\/strong>Facebook from any liability.<\/p>\n

3)\u00a0May NOT use any part of Facebook\u2019s features or functionality to enter participants in the contest<\/strong>. This means participants cannot be required to like a status\/picture, comment on a status\/picture, enter their own status\/picture, or even like the page as a condition to be entered into the contest.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Number one makes things complicated-I don’t know anything about 3rd party apps. \u00a0But do they cost $$? Do I need a new one every time I do a contest? \u00a0Shudder.<\/p>\n

Number two…pfft. \u00a0Fine. \u00a0But I’m not taking a course in legal-eze just to do a contest and as often as Facebook changes things? \u00a0I’d almost have to. \u00a0Shoot, I’d have to almost hire a contest person just to keep up with things. \u00a0I can’t afford that.<\/p>\n

Number 3…yanno what this mean? \u00a0No more…\u00a0when I hit 1600, 2000, 5000\u00a0likes I’ll give away a prize…<\/em>now I hadn’t done any of these yet, but I might have at some point. \u00a0A lot of authors have done these. \u00a0If they do it now, they run the risk of losing<\/em> their page.<\/p>\n

Keep in mind, this is a\u00a0FACEBOOK thing-I can’t control it. \u00a0If I don’t abide by their rules, they can shut my page down.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, these rules have made it so complicated…basically Facebook has made it\u00a0too<\/em> complicated to give away prizes.<\/p>\n

Big companies, this won’t affect much–they have people to do this stuff for them. \u00a0I’m not a company. I’m just me. \u00a0And if I’m spending time on crap like this? \u00a0I’m not writing. \u00a0Contests are complicated enough as it is. \u00a0I can’t let them get any more complicated.<\/p>\n

This means, sadly, I won’t even be able to use Facebook as a means of entry in the future. \u00a0Again, I can’t control this. \u00a0This is facebook. \u00a0This is also one of the reasons I’ve never much cared for Facebook. Yes, this is a new development, but still. \u00a0They want to control too much, have too much input in everything and bleh.<\/p>\n

Sorry facebook friends…you can still hop over to my blog. \u00a0That’s where most of my contests are run anyway and it’s just a click away.<\/p>\n
