One Year Later<\/p>\n

So high up. What were people thinking, making something reach so high into the sky?<\/em><\/p>\n

Nessa peered down at the earth far below, so far that the people down there didn\u2019t really look like people. More like little bugs scurrying back and forth.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy don\u2019t you just jump?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

It was only the third time Morgan had said it. If Nessa didn\u2019t know better, she\u2019d think the ghost was getting bored.<\/p>\n

\u201cI won\u2019t jump because that would be too easy for you,\u201d she said, her voice flat and cold. \u201cToo easy for us both.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEasy\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. what in the fuck do you care if it\u2019s easy for you? You want it over, so just end it already. Be done with it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Nessa swayed forward. Tempted. So very tempted. But she wouldn\u2019t do it. It was<\/em> too easy. Just too easy. Which meant something would go wrong. If she jumped, she wouldn\u2019t die. She might well break every bone in this body and end up a fucking vegetable, but she suspected deep down that she wouldn\u2019t die.<\/p>\n

God hated her too much to let her die.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know one thing I finally figured out, Morgan? I can\u2019t die. Not the easy way at least.\u201d She smiled humorlessly and murmured, \u201cIt would seem you\u2019re stuck with me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even as she swore, Morgan faded away. She wasn\u2019t strong enough to come to Nessa\u2019s mind for too long anymore. Definite plus, there. Nessa might not care for her body as she should, but the weaker she<\/em> felt, the weaker Morgan was.<\/p>\n

\u201cHave you lost your mind?\u201d<\/p>\n

She glanced behind her and the wind whipped her hair into her eyes, blinding her. She caught it in her hand, holding it back from her face as she stared at Malachi.<\/p>\n

Lifting a brow, she said, \u201cWhere the bloody hell did you come from?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat in the bloody hell are you doing?\u201d he fired back. \u201cDamn it, you have gone insane.\u201d<\/p>\n

Malachi didn\u2019t look too impressed with the view from the top of the skyscraper. \u201cI thought we had already decided on that particular subject, Mal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although he didn\u2019t age, Nessa decided he looked older now than he had a year before. Something akin to guilt tried to stir within her, but she simply didn\u2019t care enough.<\/p>\n

She\u2019d tried. Well and truly, she\u2019d tried to settle back into this life that had been thrust upon her, tried to view it as the gift<\/em> everybody else made it out to be. But then the one thing she had viewed as a gift\u2014Mei-Lin\u2014had been torn from her. That girl\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. Nessa had loved that girl like a daughter. More than.<\/p>\n

She\u2019d loved her, and just like Elias, Mei-Lin had been taken away from her.<\/p>\n

It was just too much. That precious girl, all of her friends, all dead.<\/p>\n

If this was the sort of gift life<\/em> offered, Nessa wanted none of it.<\/p>\n

Malachi, the poor fool, he worried. All of her friends did. Nessa wished she could care.<\/p>\n

But she just didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

Looking from Malachi, she cocked her head and stared down at the street. \u201cThey are all in such a hurry,\u201d she murmured. She slid Malachi a glance and asked, \u201cWhy do you think mortals always rush to and fro, Mal? Don\u2019t they know that all that rushing accomplishes nothing? They\u2019ll still get sick. They\u2019ll still suffer. They\u2019ll still die.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLovely, morbid thoughts there, love.\u201d He blew out a disgusted sigh and edged a little closer. Stretching out his hand, Malachi quietly said, \u201cCome down, Nessa.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHmmm\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0.\u201d A gust of wind picked up and as she held out her arms, it slapped against her with an intensity that made her clothes flap around her and had her swaying near the edge of one of the tallest buildings in the world.<\/p>\n

In the middle of the fucking day. Malachi stared at her and then made the fool mistake of glancing down. While he tried to pretend he wasn\u2019t dizzy, Nessa giggled like a loon and murmured, \u201cIt almost makes me feel as though I could fly, Malachi. Truly fly, like a bird.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re not a bird, pet. What you\u2019ll do is fall\u2014like a stone.\u201d Without feeling the least bit of shame, he backed away from the edge.<\/p>\n

After walking the world for a good two thousand years, there was little that bothered him, but he had to admit standing on top of the Sears Tower was on the list. Wouldn\u2019t be so bad if she\u2019d decided to do her sightseeing from inside<\/em> the tower.<\/p>\n

No, she was outside, on the roof, a place that wasn\u2019t exactly open to the public. He doubted she cared about that little detail, however. It was possible they wouldn\u2019t have too long before somebody came to investigate.<\/p>\n

Mortals, they had their cameras everywhere. He scanned the area, looking for one of the infernal things, and found a number of them. \u201cYou know, there are cameras. Where there are cameras, there are often security types watching for suspicious activity. I hope you kept them in mind when you decided to visit this particular spot.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nessa glanced at the cameras and rolled her eyes. \u201cBunch of silly electronics. They\u2019re all scrambled, and if I know security types, they\u2019ll be too busy trying to find the reason inside with their computers, gizmos and gadgets.\u201d She laughed. \u201cNot a one of them will think to come looking out here and see if maybe a witch was in the area. We\u2019re bad on devices of an electrical nature at times.\u201d<\/p>\n

Witches and technology didn\u2019t always mix well. She could short-circuit a camera from ten paces away\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. if she chose.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes. I\u2019m married to a witch, and I\u2019ve been around them long enough to know they can fry those computers, gizmos and gadgets practically on purpose if they\u2019ve a need.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nessa slid him a sidelong look. \u201cThen I imagine I had a need. I want peace, Mal. Some privacy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd you had to choose this spot to find it?\u201d Nothing here worth seeing, at least not worth seeing from the outside. The huge antennas spiraling up into the sky weren\u2019t anything worth looking at in his opinion. \u201cIf God meant any of us to be this high up in the sky, He would have given us wings,\u201d Malachi muttered. From the corner of his eye, he saw Nessa standing as close to the edge as she could without actually going over it. \u201cBloody hell, would you move a little farther back?\u201d<\/p>\n

Grinning at him over her shoulder, she asked, \u201cWhy do you look so worried?\u201d<\/p>\n

As if he couldn\u2019t believe his ears, he repeated, \u201cWorried? You\u2019re standing on the very edge of the fucking Sears Tower<\/em>, all but dancing there.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not called the Sears Tower any more, darling.\u201d She slid him a glance from the corner of her eye, smirking. \u201cIt\u2019s the Willis<\/em> Tower.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWillis Tower. Sears Tower. I don\u2019t care if they renamed it the fucking Eiffel Tower. You do know that if you fall, it could kill you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you think?\u201d Nessa cast a hopeful glance over the edge and hummed under her breath. A mournful sigh escaped her and she murmured, \u201cIf only.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNessa, damn it.\u201d<\/p>\n
