Second chances come a little harder.<\/em><\/p>\n

Chase and Zoe were the high school golden couple. Football captain, cheerleader, prom royalty.<\/p>\n

After graduation, though, Chase couldn\u2019t resist the urge to experience life outside their small town. He didn\u2019t exactly expect Zoe to wait twelve years for him, but now that he\u2019s back, he finds some small part of him hoping she did.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s no big surprise she\u2019s married. The kick in the face is she married his best friend.<\/p>\n

Zoe was devastated when Chase left, but she\u2019s filed those bittersweet memories under \u201cMoved On\u201d. She loves her life, and loves her husband. She has all she needs. And Chase keeps an honorable distance.<\/p>\n

One cold, wet, miserable day, tragedy turns Zoe\u2019s world upside down. Chase never expected her to simply fall into his arms, but a man can dream. Except his dream doesn\u2019t include the fact that this time, she\u2019s the one hitting the road\u2026and he\u2019s the one left behind.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

She went to pull away from him\u2014she couldn\u2019t take the touch of his hands\u2014it didn\u2019t feel right having him touch her. Abruptly, she stopped and stared, realized they were in the brightly lit front room of her home.<\/p>\n

The home she shared with Roger.<\/p>\n

Roger.<\/p>\n

The pain inside her rose up, grabbed her around the throat like a fist and she started to shake. She needed to cry, wanted to scream\u2014where was he?<\/p>\n

A hand touched her shoulder gently. Looking back at Chase, she stared at his face mutely.<\/p>\n

\u201cI called my dad\u2014figured he\u2019d know where Roger was,\u201d Chase said, his face neutral.<\/p>\n

His eyes weren\u2019t.<\/p>\n

Those dark blue eyes were anything but neutral, anything but calm. She couldn\u2019t entirely understand all the emotions she saw there, and she wouldn\u2019t let herself think about them, either.<\/p>\n

\u201cRoger is in Lincoln with your father, of course.\u201d Was that really her voice? So calm, so collected?<\/p>\n

How could she sound so\u2026unaffected when her life was on the verge of shattering?<\/p>\n

Brain tumor.<\/p>\n

MRI.<\/p>\n

Tests.<\/p>\n

Why aren\u2019t you here, you bastard?<\/p>\n

The sobs trapped inside her chest begged to be set free and she turned away from Chase, took one slow step toward the couch, then another. \u201cI appreciate you bringing me home. I\u2019m sure you have other things to do, though,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Calm, keep calm. Don\u2019t fall apart until he\u2019s gone\u2026<\/p>\n

\u201cZoe.\u201d He touched her shoulder again. His voice soft and low.<\/p>\n

She broke. Shattered.<\/p>\n

Sinking to the floor, she started to sob.<\/p>\n
