Reaching out, he took the picture and studied it. Then he looked up at Chase and shook his head. \u201cWhat do you want me to say, son? You were gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou could have told me,\u201d Chase said, his voice harsh, flat. \u201cYou could have told me I\u2019d spent the past fifteen years of my life thinking about a girl who is pretty much out of my reach now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf she meant that much to you, you shouldn\u2019t have waited so long to come back. Or maybe you should have given her a little bit more thought before you decided to disappear from her life,\u201d James said quietly. Then he took the picture and put it back on the shelf. \u201cAnd I wasn\u2019t going to tell you, because there were\u2026issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIssues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chase studied Zoe\u2019s lovely face. She wasn\u2019t smiling, but she looked so lovely, so delicate, ethereal, even. They looked like a matching set, her and Roger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen did they get married?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was no answer. Lifting his head, he looked back at his dad. Quietly, he said again, \u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat August.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That August.<\/p>\n<p>Shit, he could imagine the issues.<\/p>\n<p>Roger had been the issue. Roger had always had a thing for Zoe. He hadn\u2019t ever made a move on her but still\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They\u2019re happy?\u201d Envy, disbelief\u2014pain\u2014warred inside. She was gone. Out of reach. Turning, he looked at his dad and asked again,\u00a0\u201cAre they happy? Is she happy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d James tucked his hands in his pockets and nodded. \u201cThey\u2019re very happy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay. Yeah. Okay.\u201d It wasn\u2019t okay, though. Carefully, Chase set the picture down and then he turned away. Just as carefully, he tucked the necklace back inside his pocket.
