Chase never expected her to simply fall into his arms, but a man can dream. Wanted to give her everything she\u2019d wanted and never asked for.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGet it over with,\u201d he muttered, rubbing a hand up and down his face. \u201cJust get it over with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Setting his jaw, he jogged up the steps.<\/p>\n<p>Dad wasn\u2019t expecting him, but that didn\u2019t concern Chase.<\/p>\n<p>The mayor\u2019s office was quiet\u2014half of the staff out to lunch.<\/p>\n<p>The secretary, though, she recognized Chase and with a beaming smile, ushered him in.<\/p>\n<p>In his dad\u2019s office, a faint smile curling his lips, he studied the certificates, plaques and pictures on the walls.<\/p>\n<p>His dad, the mayor. From small town police officer, to chief of police, to mayor.<\/p>\n<p>What the hell.<\/p>\n<p>One picture caught his eye and he narrowed his eyes, moved closer.<\/p>\n<p>Huh.<\/p>\n<p>Roger. Roger Kirkbride. \u201cI\u2019ll be damned,\u201d Chase murmured. He skimmed the article below and then started to laugh.<\/p>\n<p>Roger had been his best friend in high school. Apparently the guy had decided small town life\u2014and politics\u2014was his thing.<\/p>\n<p>He was Dad\u2019s right-hand man.<\/p>\n<p>Still smirking, Chase set the picture and moved on, studying the rest of the framed pictures.<\/p>\n<p>The third one he picked up wiped the smile from his face and just about knocked the breath right out of his lungs.<\/p>\n<p>Zoe.<\/p>\n<p>His right fist clenched. A sharp pain jabbed into his palm and he looked down, opened it.
