And Chase keeps an honorable distance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">One cold, wet, miserable day, tragedy turns Zoe\u2019s world upside down. Chase never expected her to simply fall into his arms, but a man can dream. Except his dream doesn\u2019t include the fact that this time, she\u2019s the one hitting the road\u2026and he\u2019s the one left behind.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<p>The town of Warren hadn\u2019t changed much in fifteen years.<\/p>\n<p>But Chase Cochran hadn\u2019t much expected it to.<\/p>\n<p>Honestly, he had hoped it wouldn\u2019t. He\u2019d returned here hoping to find\u2026home.<\/p>\n<p>And so far, that was just what he\u2019d found.<\/p>\n<p>He didn\u2019t realize it, but he was smiling as he strolled through the town square.<\/p>\n<p>He hadn\u2019t thought he\u2019d miss it.<\/p>\n<p>When he left here right after graduation, all he had been able to think about was getting out, as fast as he could, as quick as he could, as far away as he could. Getting away from his dad, this town, all of it.<\/p>\n<p>His dad.<\/p>\n<p>Not because he didn\u2019t love the old man. He had. His dad had been everything. Mom had decided she couldn\u2019t be a mom, after all, a decision she came to right before Chase had turned a year old and she walked out on them both. Ever since then, it had just been Chase and his dad.<\/p>\n<p>And then Chase had gone and done the same thing, walking away without much more than an, \u201cIt\u2019s been fun\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Chase couldn\u2019t have stayed, though. He\u2019d been strangling here\u2014strangling, choking. Getting out had been paramount. At the time, it had been the right decision for him. The only decision for him.<\/p>\n<p>Still, it had been a selfish one.<\/p>\n<p>He didn\u2019t doubt his dad would welcome him back. They\u2019d kept in contact and Chase was still amazed that his dad didn\u2019t have some leftover resentment for him. Walking away like he\u2019d done\u2014walking\u2026hell, he\u2019d run.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, Chase wished he had more of his dad in him. But that was part of the reason he\u2019d left\u2026he could see himself spending his entire life in the same small town, doing the same job.<\/p>\n<p>It had taken him fifteen years to realize that really wouldn\u2019t have been such a bum deal.<\/p>\n<p>Slowing to a stop, he studied the small town hall.<\/p>\n<p>Dipping a hand in his pocket, he pulled out the gold necklace in there.<\/p>\n<p>Zoe\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>The stylized gold Z still gleamed.<\/p>\n<p>Was she still here?<\/p>\n<p>Dad would know.<\/p>\n<p>After he\u2019d left, it had taken him a year to call back home, but since that first call, he had kept in touch with his dad. Regular calls, letters\u2014hell, they were closer now than they\u2019d been when he was growing up, and they\u2019d had a pretty good relationship then.<\/p>\n<p>But Zoe had always been off limits in those conversations.<\/p>\n<p>His dad wouldn\u2019t discuss her. Period. But now that he was home\u2026well, hell. His dad would have to discuss her.<\/p>\n<p>Chase closed his eyes and blew out a breath. Shit. Rubbing a thumb over the smooth surface of the Z, he looked up at the town hall. He needed to prepare himself for the fact that he just might find out that Zoe wasn\u2019t here.<\/p>\n<p>That she was here\u2026and married.<\/p>\n<p>Considering how he had left, he really didn\u2019t have any right to expect much of anything different.<\/p>\n<p>He hadn\u2019t warned her, hadn\u2019t told her. Not until the day he left.
