{"id":1807,"date":"2008-11-11T14:59:04","date_gmt":"2008-11-11T14:59:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/shilohwalker.wordpress.com\/?p=1807"},"modified":"2008-11-11T14:59:04","modified_gmt":"2008-11-11T14:59:04","slug":"pardon-me-while-i-squeal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/2008\/11\/pardon-me-while-i-squeal\/","title":{"rendered":"Pardon me while I squeal&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Remember when I was so jazzed because I got an <a href=\"http:\/\/shilohwalker.wordpress.com\/2008\/02\/04\/86ed\/\" target=\"_blank\">86 from Mrs. Giggles<\/a>?\u00a0 I&#8217;m not sure, but that moment might have just been eclipsed.\u00a0 Not sure.\u00a0 Well, maybe it&#8217;s a tie.\u00a0 I mean&#8230; an <strong>86<\/strong> from <em><strong>Mrs. GIggles<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 Whoa.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, I&#8217;m rambling.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I was doing my bloghop and telling myself I needed to get to work and I ended up over at Smart Bitches.\u00a0 They reviewed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smartbitchestrashybooks.com\/index.php\/weblog\/comments\/talking-with-the-dead-by-shiloh-walker\/\" target=\"_blank\">Talking with The Dead.<\/a> I got a C-.\u00a0 Before anybody boggles and wonders why I&#8217;m so thrilled about a C-, let me explain why.\u00a0 Or rather, I&#8217;ll quote some of the review.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" title=\"Talking with the Dead\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/samhainpublishing.com\/graphics\/225.jpg?resize=200%2C300\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/>Let me say outright: there were a lot things that frustrated me about this story, but Shiloh Walker\u2019s writing is not one of them. Despite the elements that I\u2019ll get to in a moment, I\u2019ll be looking for Walker\u2019s books in the future because her writing is SOLID. The narrative voice was unique and inviting, and often underscored the subtle language differences between the hero (a Southern man) and the heroine (an Indiana sheriff). The plot was tight, with growing and ebbing tension.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Walker has serious skillz with the dramatic tension, the descriptions, the pacing, the mood and the narration, and as a character O\u2019Rourke is marvelously written. I particularly adored the dialogue between O\u2019Rourke and his brother \u2013 familial banter with an extraordinary subtext, and humor balanced with pain. Those were definitely my favorite scenes.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s very little \u201cmeh\u201d in this novella for me \u2013 I either adored parts or was screeching about others. The good, I\u2019ve outlined. I don\u2019t know if I can underscore how good I found the good parts, particularly Walker\u2019s writing. It\u2019s damn good.
