Closing shop\u2026<\/p>\n

Okay, I\u2019ve come to a decision.<\/p>\n

This hasn\u2019t been a particularly easy<\/em> decision\u2026as in I know it\u2019s going to bother (some) people. (Probably those who already friends with me on facebook and don’t want to mess with more ‘likes’).<\/p>\n

But it\u2019s also not a hard one, because I realize it\u2019s the right decision for me.<\/p>\n

In the next week or so, I\u2019m closing my regular Facebook page.\u00a0 My \u2018author\u2019 page, found here<\/a><\/strong>, will remain.\u00a0 I\u2019ve got Nicole who\u2019ll be around to help me with questions there and that has never been so crazy that I can\u2019t keep up and<\/em> that page is more manageable.\u00a0 My friend Erin also helps me there so I know that page is in good hands.<\/p>\n

But with my regular Facebook page, it\u2019s a different story.\u00a0 Too many inbox messages, too much author spam\u2026just too much.\u00a0 A lot of the time, these are questions that I\u2019ve already answered via the FAQs or directly on the pages of books here on my website, on the What\u2019s New page of my site, etc.<\/p>\n

I realize some people are probably thinking, Well, we are interested in the books\u2014that\u2019s a good thing\u2014why don\u2019t you want to answer those questions<\/em>?<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not a matter of not wanting to answer<\/em>.\u00a0 It\u2019s a matter of I\u2019ve already answered them\u2014sometimes to the tune of dozens of times.\u00a0 It simply takes visiting my website and checking out either the FAQ or the What\u2019s new page.<\/p>\n

When I\u2019m constantly answering these questions for the twentieth time, one thing I\u2019m not <\/em>doing? Well\u2026I\u2019m not writing. A few questions here, a few questions there, it adds up to a lot of time taken out of the author\u2019s day and there are only so many hours, ya know?<\/p>\n

Social networking is great for letting authors connect with readers\u2026 I love it, I really do.<\/p>\n

I<\/em> love connecting with the authors whose work I enjoy\u2026I see Teresa Mederios on Twitter and I get all giggly when she tweets me back\u2014two of her books are die hard favorites of mine and I love that she\u2019s there and I can say Hi<\/em>!\u00a0 I saw Mercedes Lackey on Twitter and my heart almost stopped.\u00a0 And although it\u2019s not twitter, when I see Lynn Viehl drop in on my blog?\u00a0 I have complete and total fan girl squeals.\u00a0 You should see the way my husband looks at me when this happens.\u00a0 And emails from her?\u00a0 Um\u2026well, it\u2019s kind of embarrassing.<\/p>\n

I love<\/em> being able to connect with authors.\u00a0 I love being about to connect with my readers.<\/p>\n

But social networking, if we let it, will eat up so much time and we\u2019ve got to write.\u00a0 In the end, we\u2019ve got to write or we\u2019re not writers.<\/p>\n

When I\u2019m answering questions I\u2019ve already answered, and they\u2019re coming in on Goodreads, on Facebook, on Twitter\u2026I\u2019m spending so much time keeping up with the social networking and I\u2019m not writing during that time.\u00a0 I\u2019m paid to be a writer, I\u2019m expected to be a writer\u2026and I figure most people are here anyway because they have an interest in my books.<\/p>\n

And because I\u2019m big on honesty\u2026yes.\u00a0 Answering questions repeatedly does<\/em> get tiresome to me.\u00a0 I\u2019m not trying to be rude and I apologize if I hurt feelings.\u00a0 I\u2019m a bitchy person even on my best days, but I don\u2019t set out to intentionally hurt anybody\u2019s feelings.\u00a0 I\u2019m sorry if I\u2019ve done that.<\/p>\n

But I imagine most people have those days when you have people constantly asking you the same sort of thing over and over\u2026this is the tiresome aspect.<\/p>\n

I blog, I tweet, I do Goodreads (or rather I did<\/em> Goodreads), I Facebook and I have all of these questions coming from all of these venues and 98% of the questions asked are already answered on my site.<\/p>\n

Again, it\u2019s not that I\u2019m not thrilled with the interest, and if there\u2019s a question that somebody honestly can\u2019t find on my site, either on the book\u2019s page, the FAQ, or the What\u2019s New page, then I definitely want to hear so I can answer it.\u00a0 God knows I\u2019m an airhead and there are probably questions that I need to put up on the FAQ page.<\/p>\n

But if you can try to understand\u2026 sometimes keeping up with these sites is almost like trying to keep up with individual websites\u2026and<\/em> the individual emails that go along with it.\u00a0 And I\u2019m done with it.<\/p>\n

I love hearing from my readers and I hope you all know that.\u00a0 I just have to cut back on some of the time I spend on non-writing business stuff of writing and streamline things.\u00a0 This is one way to do it\u2014if I\u2019m not there on Facebook, people can either hit the author page or hit my site for the info.<\/p>\n

And um\u2026yay<\/em>\u2026if I\u2019m not there on Facebook, I don\u2019t have anymore author spam coming at me on Facebook anymore either\u2026yay!!!!\u00a0 Double yay!!!\u00a0 (I hate author spam-finding a way to be rid of that is almost enough to make me wanna do a happy dance.)<\/p>\n

Somebody suggested I just ignore the questions that have already been answered, but that\u2019s not the answer, either.<\/p>\n

Somebody else suggested that I just make the page for \u2018business friends and associates\u2019 only so they continue to network with me.\u00a0 But\u2026well, my friends know how to contact me if they need to and I didn\u2019t go to Facebook to network anyway.<\/p>\n

I went to Facebook to connect with readers and with the author page, I can still do that.\u00a0 \u00a0People who want me to hang around to \u2018network\u2019?\u00a0 Basically this is a translation for\u2026 \u2018hang around so we can use you<\/em>.\u2019 <\/em>No, thanks.\u00a0 I\u2019ll pass.\u00a0 Go network elsewhere.<\/p>\n

I honestly think the answer is to cutback.\u00a0 I\u2019m just spreading myself too thin and some things are going to have to give.\u00a0 Facebook is the first one\u2014the author page isn\u2019t going anywhere but by eliminating the regular Facebook, then I don\u2019t have the questions coming through that route\u2014people can post them to the author page where Nicole can answer them, or they can check my site and hopefully find the info they need there.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve got some killer deadlines coming up on me and after the stress of 2010, I know if I don\u2019t find a way to decompress in 2011, I\u2019m going to turn into a babbling pile of useless goo\u2026incapable of writing.<\/p>\n

So\u2026buh-bye Facebook.\u00a0 I\u2019d say it\u2019s been fun\u2026but\u2026well, I never liked it all that much.\u00a0 You can still find me at the author page<\/a><\/strong> and I\u2019ll keep that up, but the regular page?\u00a0 It\u2019s going the way of the Dodo\u2026<\/p>\n

(and don’t worry… twitter isn’t next on the casualty list…I like twitter).<\/p>\n
