Tiny lead-in… Perci (the heroine) is a healer.<\/em><\/p>\n

She weighed nothing.<\/p>\n

Jack carried her into his house and tried not to think about how fragile she felt, how delicate.<\/p>\n

As he lay her on his bed, he sat down beside her and touched the pulse in her neck, although he wasn\u2019t sure why.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t like she could die, right?<\/p>\n

But she\u2019d coughed up blood. She\u2019d collapsed. She was unconscious, and damn it, why the hell had she done that? It wasn\u2019t like he hadn\u2019t dealt with busted ribs before.<\/p>\n

The pulse under his touch was strong, steady, although slower than he would have expected. He sighed and shifted around, buried his face in his hands, and even as he did it, he marveled that he could do it without pain. Not even ten minutes ago, he\u2019d been all but ready to beg for her to just leave him the hell alone just so he could do something about his fucking ribs, and now he was fine.<\/p>\n

Driven by curiosity, he stood and moved to the mirror over his bureau, staring at his face. He should have looked like a human punching bag.<\/p>\n

But there wasn\u2019t even a damn mark on him.<\/p>\n

He grabbed the hem of his bloodied and stained T-shirt and pulled it off. His ribs should have been black and blue, but there was nothing.<\/p>\n

In the mirror, he looked at Perci\u2019s reflection, watched as she shifted, watched her face tighten with pain. He clenched his jaw and turned around, strode across the floor.<\/p>\n

She\u2019d taken his injuries, his fucking busted ribs. Sitting down on the side of the bed, he caught her shirt and eased it up. And felt like he\u2019d been sucker-punched all over again. Because her ribs looked easily twice as bad as his should<\/em> have looked.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s\u2026passing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shifting his gaze up, he realized she\u2019d woken up and was staring at him, her brown eyes clouded with pain.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you hadn\u2019t fucking done<\/em> that, there wouldn\u2019t be anything to pass.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI still would have been hurting, as long as I was anywhere near you.\u201d She grimaced. \u201cI heal. I can\u2019t be around somebody in physical pain without feeling something, and it\u2019s worse with somebody I know, somebody I\u2019ve\u2026ah\u2026well\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFucked?\u201d<\/p>\n

She wrinkled her nose. \u201cI was thinking connected with<\/em>. If there\u2019s some sort of connection, it\u2019s a lot worse.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen you should have just gotten the hell away from me.\u201d He stared at the bruises, willing them to fade. But it didn\u2019t seem like they were. Impatient, he grabbed the knife from his boot and sliced her shirt open.<\/p>\n

Perci glared at him. \u201cDamn it, what are you doing?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou said you heal fast. You should<\/em> heal fast and I\u2019m not seeing it happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s only been a few minutes.\u201d Then she closed her eyes and took a slow, clearly cautious breath. \u201cI can breathe easier, and it\u2019s not hurting as much. The bruises will be the last thing to go. But it\u2019s getting better.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gently, he touched one finger to a bruise. It was an ugly stain on her pale, pale skin and just the sight of it was like an obscenity. \u201cYou shouldn\u2019t have done this,\u201d he muttered. \u201cIt was my fight, my fault. You shouldn\u2019t have had to deal with the pain.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI was given a gift to use it.\u201d She stared at him with unconcerned eyes, liked she wasn\u2019t bothered by the fact that her entire torso was a dark rainbow. \u201cAnd hey, I\u2019ve had worse.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou honestly feel the pain of everybody around you?\u201d<\/p>\n

She shrugged. \u201cNot all the time. I can shield against it and I don\u2019t help everybody. I can\u2019t. Even my energy isn\u2019t endless. I\u2019ve figured that out.\u201d She closed her eyes. \u201cAnd the gift has\u2026changed over time. But this was easy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou call this easy?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCompared to some of the people I\u2019ve had to heal? Yes.\u201d<\/p>\n

He was staring so hard at the bruises it took him a few moments to realize they were actually lessening. Fading away.<\/p>\n

It was a slow, gradual thing, and he counted the minutes away as he watched her body slowly absorb the bruises she\u2019d taken from him.<\/p>\n

Fifteen minutes after she\u2019d opened her eyes, she squinted at him and demanded, \u201cAre you going to sit there until every last bruise is gone?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d He curled his hand over her hip, rubbed one bruise with his thumb. \u201cThey never should have gone to you to begin with.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, for crying out loud\u2026\u201d She went to sit up, but then she froze.<\/p>\n

Her brown eyes were only inches away from him, her mouth so very, very close.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t like seeing marks on you,\u201d Jack muttered.<\/p>\n

Perci\u2019s lashes lowered over her eyes. \u201cUnfortunately, I get marked up a lot. But I heal fast. Deal with it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHmmm.\u201d He dipped his head and skimmed his lips down her neck. \u201cWhy did you leave so fast?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2026\u201d She shuddered. \u201cI needed to think.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThinking can be very overrated.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah. But it needed to be done.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay.\u201d He brushed the ruin of her shirt aside and nipped the soft curve of her shoulder. \u201cDid it help you figure anything out?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. Not a damn thing.\u201d She tilted her head to the side, baring her neck.<\/p>\n

Jack took the hint and nuzzled her neck again, scraping the flesh with his teeth and smiling as she shivered. \u201cI like the feel of you, Perci. I like the taste of you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHmmm. The feeling is mutual.\u201d She stroked a hand up his side and then whispered, \u201cJack, can I ask you something?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnything.\u201d Damn, he\u2019d give her anything\u2026<\/p>\n
