Take time off\u2014<em>real<\/em> time, or you\u2019re out. <em>For good<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI just took a couple of weeks last year.\u201d He glared into Miles\u2019 haggard face, taking in the bags under Miles\u2019 eyes, the pale cast to the older man\u2019s skin. \u201cShit, you don\u2019t look much better than me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ve been sick, dumbass. I also ride a desk. I\u2019m not trying to infiltrate human trafficking circles. My life isn\u2019t at risk every second of every day while I\u2019m on the job,\u201d Miles snapped. \u201cWhen you\u2019re in that line of work, you have to have razor-sharp instincts. Once mine started slipping, I made the decision to move off the front line.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m <em>not<\/em> slipping,\u201d Travis growled. \u201cThe intel was shit and there were more potential targets than anticipated. And what the fuck are you bitching about? I got the information you needed. I got in, got out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou got in, got shot, you \u2026 \u201d Miles stopped and turned away, stomping over to the window to glare out over the skyline of Mexico City. \u201cTravis. You can\u2019t keep this up. With your last injury, that bullet you took put you down for three months. This time, you were on an op that should have been a cakewalk for you. You\u2014fuck. Never mind. But you\u2019re done. You\u2019re taking time off. Six months, <em>minimum<\/em>, and if you even <em>try<\/em> to argue this, I\u2019m cutting you loose.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Six months?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Travis hauled himself into a sitting position, ignoring the nauseating pain through sheer will alone. Sweat dripped down his brow, the thick, clammy sweat that came from illness or exhaustion\u2014or both. He ignored that, too, staring at Miles\u2019 back with something bordering on desperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMiles \u2026 shit. Look, okay, I\u2019ll be careful. You\u2019re right. Maybe I was a little reckless this time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStop.\u201d Miles turned and pinned a hard look on him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Something in his old friend\u2019s eyes made Travis do just that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou think I\u2019m blind to how much you\u2019ve changed in the past few years? How much you\u2019ve changed since that night you saw Isabel?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Travis jerked his gaze away, fixing it on the overbright sunlight streaming in through the window. \u201cShe\u2019s got nothing to do with this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBullshit.\u201d Eyes hard, Miles cut between Travis and his determined study of the view of the city beyond the window. \u201cFuck me, it started before that. You\u2019ve been half-dead inside ever since you learned the truth and it\u2019s gotten worse every single year. For more than a decade, I\u2019ve been watching you self-destruct, but this past year? It\u2019s twice as bad. I think what really pushed you over the edge was seeing your twin get hitched. What\u2019s the matter? Are you that fucking jealous of seeing your brothers all happy?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Travis shoved out of the bed, temper exploding out in a rush of violence. \u201cKeep it up, Hawkins, and we\u2019ll see how fast I can put you on the floor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou can\u2019t stay upright for more than a minute.\u201d Miles crossed his arms and leaned against the wall, giving his watch an insulting glance as if to measure the time. \u201cMaybe we should make a wager on it. If you can come over here and make me eat my words, then fine, you can come back to work once the doctor releases you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;Travis clenched a hand into a fist and cursed, each one blistering and hot. But he didn\u2019t take a single step; he could already feel his legs going wobbly and weak under him, adrenaline deserting him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t begrudge my brothers <em>any<\/em> happiness,\u201d he bit off, furious Miles would even insinuate it. \u201cEspecially not Trey. He\u2019s been through enough hell. He damn well deserves what he\u2019s found with Ressa.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI never said you begrudged him, or any of them,\u201d Miles said quietly. \u201cYou\u2019re too good a man for that sort of pettiness. But even the best of us can feel envy and I know you too well, probably even better than your brothers, better than your own twin at this point, because you don\u2019t let them know you. Ever since you got back from Trey and Ressa\u2019s wedding, you\u2019ve gotten quieter, darker, sadder. And we both know why.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Travis wanted to tell Miles to shut the fuck up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because he was wrong, but because Miles was right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Too right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About most of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou\u2019re wrong about one thing,\u201d he said, dropping back down onto the bed, grunting as it sent pain screaming through him. \u201cI\u2019m not a good man.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A good man wouldn\u2019t have turned his back on the woman who\u2019d loved him, not when she\u2019d needed him the most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTravis \u2026 \u201d Miles sighed. \u201cYou made a mistake. You were just a kid. And shit, you\u2019re easier on me than you are on yourself. <em>I\u2019m<\/em> the reason you <em>made<\/em> the mistake. Can\u2019t you forgive yourself? It\u2019s been almost fourteen years.\u201d \u201cAsk me in a hundred and fourteen.\u201d He flipped the thin, scratchy blanket over his legs and flung a forearm over his eyes. \u201cYou win. I\u2019ll take some time off. But I can\u2019t go back to my family with my head in the shape it\u2019s in. Figure something else out. Shoot me the details when you do. Now get out and let me sleep.
