My father left the house to me after he died a few years ago. I decided recently to come down here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDown here?\u201d he asked, squeezing her hand once more before releasing it. \u201cI knew it. You\u2019re a Yank.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laughing, she tucked her tingling hand into her pocket. \u201cI\u2019m only from across the river. Just a little bit of Yank. And actually, I grew up in Louisville.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHmm. I guess that\u2019s not too bad,\u201d Luke said, smiling at her. His mouth, a sculpted thing of near perfection, curved up at one corner and he stated, \u201cYou are a very lovely woman, Chelsea Jane.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her cheeks flushed and her heart started dancing in her chest as she stuttered out a thank you.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it you\u2019re reading?\u201d he asked, grinning mischievously at her obvious embarrassment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust some old journals I found up in the attic,\u201d she said, glancing down at the book as though she had forgotten she held it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAh. Your father\u2019s?\u201d Luke asked, studying her closely, keeping an easy smile on his face, though nothing inside him felt easy as he studied her. He had been watching, and waiting, for a long time.<\/p>\n<p>It was <em>her.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>So very different.<\/p>\n<p>But her.<\/p>\n<p>CJ laughed. When she did, it had her golden brown eyes sparkling. Her skin had a naturally dusky hue to it, and Luke wondered idly if the flesh of her torso was the same sun<del cite=\"mailto:Raelene%20Gorlinsky\" datetime=\"2004-10-30T15:01\"> <\/del> <ins cite=\"mailto:Raelene%20Gorlinsky\" datetime=\"2004-10-30T15:01\">&#8211;<\/ins>kissed tone. Dragging his eyes back up, he had to smile in return as CJ said, \u201cMy father keeping journals? Not in this life<del cite=\"mailto:Raelene%20Gorlinsky\" datetime=\"2004-10-30T15:02\"> <\/del>time. You usually keep a journal to write down your innermost thoughts and feelings. And my father had no thoughts or feelings that didn\u2019t pertain to his studies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSounds like a rather sad man,\u201d Luke noted, wondering what such a father had been like for this girl.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah. I guess he was.\u201d Her mouth pursed thoughtfully as she studied the journal she held. \u201cActually, the journals all belong to a girl who lived more than a hundred years ago. My father would probably have me beaten simply for touching them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThings were meant to be enjoyed, not locked in a museum,\u201d Luke said, eyeing the journal with interest. \u201cI imagine your father probably felt otherwise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d CJ\u2019s head came up and she looked him square in the eye. \u201cWould you like to come up and see the house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yes\u2026<\/p>\n<p>That, he wanted more than anything. But the walls were still there. He could feel them, in his soul, in a way Luke really couldn\u2019t describe.
