\u201cYou playing today?\u201d Kalen asked.<\/p>\n

Syn lifted a shoulder.\u00a0 \u201cUnless you plan to.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bron went flying passed them\u2014literally.\u00a0 He landed with an oomph<\/span><\/em> and lay there for a few seconds, a dazed look in his eyes.\u00a0 \u00a0His lean face went red as he tried to breathe.<\/p>\n

Syn and Kalen grinned at each other.\u00a0 Then Kalen said, \u201cI\u2019ll pass.\u00a0 Lee and I are doing some hand-to-hand tonight.\u00a0 I\u2019d rather not start off injured.\u00a0 I\u2019ll let you have the fun today.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCoward.\u201d \u00a0Syn clucked her tongue.\u00a0 She watched, gauging the distance, as Xan started towards Bron.\u00a0 As he offered a hand to the other man, Syn moved.<\/p>\n

She went for his feet and as he went down, she slid away.<\/p>\n

It was like hitting a brick wall, she decided.\u00a0 A heated brick wall.\u00a0 She was so used to being cold, but the moment she touched him, even though her touch was an attack and not a caress, his heat chased away the chill and left her entire body suffused with warmth.<\/p>\n

He was outweighed her, outreached her, and stood nearly a head taller than she did.\u00a0 Which pretty much described every sparring partner she\u2019d ever had.<\/p>\n

That unreadable gaze of his didn\u2019t change, but she sensed some surprise coming off him as he came to his feet.\u00a0 Bron was up, too, and he moved so that he stood just a little behind Syn and off to the side.\u00a0 It was a choreographed move\u2014they\u2019d done this a thousand times and they\u2019d do it a thousand more.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo now it is two on one,\u201d Xan said, his voice emotionless.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt can be a lot of fun.\u201d Syn flashed him a cheeky smile, keeping her weight on the balls of her feet.\u00a0 Her heart was racing.\u00a0 Her skin felt warm, edging close to hot as she waited.<\/p>\n

Xan didn\u2019t make a move towards her, even though she stood the closest.\u00a0 He circled around, trying to make for Bron.\u00a0 Even after he had Bron back down, he didn\u2019t engage with her.\u00a0 Syn lifted a brow and asked, \u201cYou do have a second opponent you have to take down.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not putting a woman on the ground.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay.\u201d\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t the first time she\u2019d been told that and she\u2019d handle it the same way she handled it every other time.\u00a0 The cold knot tried to settle back inside her, but it faded when she attacked him\u2014when she touched him.<\/p>\n

He deflected her next attack.\u00a0 And the next.\u00a0 Bron was back on his feet at that point, though and as he moved towards him, Syn went for another takedown.\u00a0 He went down and as he did, he tried to catch her feet.<\/p>\n

She was prepared for him, though, springing away at just the last second. Xan got back on his feet and this time, the look he shot her seemed a little bit perturbed.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can either spar me straight-on, or I\u2019ll keep coming at your back.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not fighting with a woman.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen get out,\u201d she told him. \u00a0She wasn\u2019t touching him now and as she crossed her arms over her chest, the cold knot returned.\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cThe gate\u2019s that way.\u00a0 You can walk out now.\u00a0 If you move quickly enough, you can probably catch up to the convoy.\u00a0 But you don\u2019t get to pick and choose your poison here, my friend.\u00a0 You do it my way or you hit the road.\u201d<\/p>\n

His eye narrowed on her face.\u00a0 \u201cYou sound very certain of that fact.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWith good reason.\u201d<\/p>\n

With the exception of Xan and Syn, everybody turned to look at Kalen as he entered the circle.\u00a0 He stood a few inches taller than Xan.\u00a0 He wore cavinir\u2014a light, form-fitting armor that clung to a hard, leanly muscled body.<\/p>\n

Kalen had been born a warrior, forced to become a leader.\u00a0 At a time when he should have been dreaming about girls and dreading his impending adulthood, he\u2019d been on the front line of their war.<\/p>\n

He circled to stand in front of Xan, pinning the other man with a cool silvery gaze.\u00a0 \u201cNobody stays in my camp without proving they can hold their own.\u00a0 Nobody stays in my camp without showing they know how to handle themselves, without showing they know how to take orders.\u00a0 That includes training\u2014you either spar Captain Caar, as ordered, or you get the hell out.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t believe in harming women,\u201d Xan growled.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not about harming women.\u201d\u00a0 Syn moved between them and gave Kalen a narrow look.\u00a0 He inclined his head and fell back, letting her handle it.\u00a0 There was one thing she could rely on to chase away the chill, and that was anger.\u00a0 Right now, it flooded her and she welcomed it\u2014welcomed it, channeled it.<\/p>\n

Giving Xan a pointed stare, she said, \u201cI\u2019m not calling you on the floor to get hurt, Xan. \u00a0Trust me, I don\u2019t like pain, although I am used to it.\u00a0 But this isn\u2019t about hurting me, hurting women.\u00a0 \u00a0It\u2019s called training\u2014we all do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen train women against women.\u00a0 Females are naturally weaker than males\u2014the risk for injury to the woman is too high, even in training.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo this is about having a level playing field?\u201d Syn snorted. \u00a0\u201cSure, because we\u2019re fighting a war where there\u2019s always an excess of fairness.\u201d<\/p>\n

Xan stared at her, his black gaze unflinching.\u00a0 \u201cI do not raise my hand to women.\u201d<\/p>\n

Syn smirked.\u00a0 \u201cThat\u2019s a way of thinking that could end up with you getting hurt\u2014in a serious way.\u201d She glanced over his shoulder and her smile took on a decidedly devilish twist.\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cBron, you\u2019re out.\u00a0 Elina.\u00a0 Coryan.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elina Corsairs, long and lean, came at him from his right, a blur of movement.\u00a0 She was all speed and grace and as he moved to deflect her attack, the other woman came up behind him.<\/p>\n

Coryan Holder stood at six feet and her body was nearly as broad as Xan\u2019s.\u00a0 As he backed away from Elina, Coryan caught him in a wrestler\u2019s hold and wrenched him off his feet.\u00a0 He went down and as one, the three women in the circle moved on him.<\/p>\n

Elina ended up on her ass first.\u00a0 She would have moved back in but Syn caught her eye and shook her head.<\/p>\n

Now facing Coryan and Syn, Xan grimaced.\u00a0 He looked between the two women, his gaze measuring.<\/p>\n

Finally<\/span><\/em>.\u00a0 Syn knew what sort of picture they presented.\u00a0 Coryan had the muscle mass to rival a man\u2019s and her face was scarred, hardened from battle and years of a harsh life.\u00a0 Syn had faced that same hard life, and many of the same battles, but she was slender, not particularly tall and she looked\u2026well, soft.<\/p>\n

He\u2019d go for Coryan next, she figured.\u00a0 Eliminate what he perceived as the biggest threat.<\/p>\n

This wasn\u2019t a new scenario for her.\u00a0 Too many of the men who wanted to join the rebellion showed up with preconceived notions\u2014they were fighting a war against those that preyed on their females and having those females involved directly in the fight went against their baser instincts.<\/p>\n

He feinted towards Coryan but at the last minute, he changed direction.\u00a0 Moving too damn fast, he came for Syn.\u00a0 Only one thing saved her\u2014he wasn\u2019t used to fighting somebody half his size.\u00a0 She darted away, relying on her flexibility and years of experience to evade him.\u00a0 It was close, though.\u00a0 She felt the disturbance in the air ripple against her flesh.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t waste any time and came at her again, harder.\u00a0 Faster.<\/p>\n

Syn took his legs out from under him, but he was prepared this time and when he went down, so did she.\u00a0 Trapped under his bigger body, she sucked air into her lungs.<\/p>\n

Heat<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Once more, touching him flooded her with heat, heat that suffused every fiber of her being, chasing away the chill.\u00a0 For the briefest moment, they were close, close as lovers and she let herself revel in that heat, let herself feel his strength, feel all of him.\u00a0 But not enough\u2026no where near enough.<\/p>\n

Through their clothes, she could feel the heavy thud of his heart, beating so close to hers.<\/p>\n

Then he spoke, and the spell shattered.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis isn\u2019t a fair fight,\u201d he said in a monotone.<\/p>\n

Working her hands in between them, she jabbed at his neck.\u00a0 He went red and gasped for air.\u00a0 As he went to shove away from her, she caught him between his legs with her knee.<\/p>\n

It was utterly silent, save for the strange, choked sound he made deep in his throat as he rolled to the side.\u00a0 Syn came to her feet and stood over him.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re damn right it\u2019s not a fair fight,\u201d she told him.\u00a0 \u201cBut then again, you can\u2019t win a war, you can\u2019t survive if you\u2019re busy complaining about a fair fight.\u201d<\/p>\n

She moved to the edge of the circle, watching Xan from under her lashes.\u00a0 He recovered quick, rolling to his feet and watching her with a mix of disbelief and anger.\u00a0 The anger melted away, replaced by that same measuring gaze he\u2019d focused on every other fighter he\u2019d met in the circle.<\/p>\n

About damn time<\/span><\/em>.<\/p>\n
