In that moment, I came awake, my body shuddering as pain\ngripped me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I gasped and in a blink, two men stood over me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One was Will and I glared at him balefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Okay, yeah, I\u2019d been the one to pounce on his back and send\nthe two of us tumbling to the ground\u2014or\u2026through\n<\/em>it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I still didn\u2019t know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But whatever had happened, it resulted in me hurting more\nthan I could remember hurting, short of dying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I didn\u2019t think that was happening. Not yet, at least.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But then my gaze skipped over and hit the other man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Memory slammed into me, swamping me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I sucked in a breath and that very action brought tears to\nmy eyes, but it wasn\u2019t enough to make me look away from him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Silvered moonlight washed the color from his eyes, from his\nhair, leaving him cut with swathes of pale light and deep shadow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His face was harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grimmer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it was him<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My throat locked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A name sprang to my lips, but instinct had me locking it\nback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Open your mouth now<\/em>.\nShaken, I tore my gaze away. Unable to find a single thing to look at, save for\nhis profile or the star-studded sky overhead, I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tommy. It\u2019s Tommy.\nThomas<\/em>\u2026It connected in my head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His name was Thomas. Thomas Finn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reflexively, I clenched my hands into fists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDo you remember what happened?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The low, cool voice forced my attention away from Thom and I\nfound myself looking at Will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oh, bite me<\/em>. The\ncomment burned on the tip of my tongue, but I held it back. It was my own damn\nfault I was lying there, feeling like I\u2019d been worked over by a couple of the\nmeaner demons\u2014the nasty ones who liked to eat people. They were vicious and\nonce I\u2019d stumbled across a group of them, interrupted meal-time. If I hadn\u2019t\nhad the Glock I coddled like a baby, I never would have made it out of that\nalive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two of them had still gotten their hands on me and I\u2019d spent\ntwo weeks pissing blood and eating nothing any harder than mashed potatoes while\nhealing up the damage they\u2019d done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was the most damage I\u2019d ever taken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Right now? I didn\u2019t feel quite<\/em>\nthat bad. But it was close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRemember?\u201d I curled my lip at him as I slowly worked on\ngetting my arms under me. That hurt. I eased upright. That hurt worse<\/em>. Something ground inside me and I\ngasped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Okay, broken ribs. Lovely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Panting, I made it upright and saw that Will was watching me\nwith unsympathetic eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Off to the side\u2026I swallowed, tried not to let myself think about him<\/em>, his name\u2026the wisp of memory that was his hands on me. I remembered that. Bits and pieces of a life I\u2019d suspected but never really remembered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSure.\u201d I settled my weight back on my hands, doggedly\nfocusing on Will\u2019s face. \u201cI remember you grabbing me, knocking me out. Then I\u2019m\nin a hotel room and you won\u2019t let me leave. You yammering in my ear\u2014then inside my head<\/em>\u2014and then without\nexplaining jackshit\u2014you tell me I\u2019m free to go.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Silver flashed in those eyes. A silver glow<\/em>. It was eerie as hell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I tensed and braced myself to grab for a weapon, only to\nremember he\u2019d taken most of them. And I hadn\u2019t gotten them back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His voice was still soft as he asked, \u201cDo you remember what\nhappened next?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh, yeah. That was the Tilt-A-Whirl ride from hell, man.\nNow. Where are my weapons? Get them and I\u2019ll get out of your hair.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWill you\u2026?\u201d He drew those words out, a thin, mocking layer\nof amusement under them as he rose and turned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thom spoke then, and I flinched at the sound of his voice,\nstill so familiar, even after all these years. But it should be\u2026I dreamed about\nhim all the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But he never sounded so cold, so hard. So angry<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
