her foot.\u00a0 But before she could smash it  \t\t\t\t\t\tdown on the man\u2019s instep, he moved.<\/p>\n<p>Moved  \t\t\t\t\t\ttoo quick\u2014<\/p>\n<p>She  \t\t\t\t\t\tfound herself whirled around, her back pressed up  \t\t\t\t\t\tagainst a hard male body.\u00a0 Panic welled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAna!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That  \t\t\t\t\t\tvoice\u2014<\/p>\n<p>She  \t\t\t\t\t\tstilled, sucked in a breath.\u00a0 As she did, the panic  \t\t\t\t\t\tinside her started to ease, her body relaxed, before she  \t\t\t\t\t\teven realized why.<\/p>\n<p>She  \t\t\t\t\t\tcould smell him\u2026and she knew that smell.<\/p>\n<p>Licking  \t\t\t\t\t\ther lips, she whispered, \u201cDuke?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He let  \t\t\t\t\t\ther go, quick, as though he couldn\u2019t stand to have his  \t\t\t\t\t\thands on her, and she figured he probably couldn\u2019t.\u00a0  \t\t\t\t\t\tInstinctively, she tightened her shields, unwilling to  \t\t\t\t\t\tpick anything up from him.\u00a0 Even if she deserved to have  \t\t\t\t\t\this disgust with her filling her head, she\u2019d rather not,  \t\t\t\t\t\tthanks very much.\u00a0 Edging away, she turned and looked at  \t\t\t\t\t\thim.<\/p>\n<p>The  \t\t\t\t\t\tsight of him hit her straight in her core, a punch of  \t\t\t\t\t\theat that left her legs weak and her skin tight and  \t\t\t\t\t\titchy.\u00a0 She let go of her carryon and folded her arms  \t\t\t\t\t\tacross her middle.\u00a0 \u201cWhat are you doing here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhatever in the hell the problem is, it isn\u2019t  \t\t\t\t\t\timportant enough to keep you from taking off for a  \t\t\t\t\t\tweekend?\u201d \u00a0He glanced down at the carryon and then up at  \t\t\t\t\t\ther face.<\/p>\n<p>Ana  \t\t\t\t\t\tnarrowed her eyes.\u00a0 \u201cYou\u2019re the damn Hunter, not me.\u00a0  \t\t\t\t\t\tPlaying avenging angel, guardian angel, that\u2019s <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> your <\/span><\/em>business, not mine.\u201d Exhaustion, unrequited  \t\t\t\t\t\tlust, and fear were sheer hell on a person\u2019s willpower,  \t\t\t\t\t\tshe realized, clamping her mouth shut before she could  \t\t\t\t\t\tsay anything else.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you  \t\t\t\t\t\tgot no problem announcing that there\u2019s a problem, but  \t\t\t\t\t\tthen disappearing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou  \t\t\t\t\t\ttold me to handle it myself, if I recall correctly.\u201d She  \t\t\t\t\t\talmost said something else, but decided it against it.\u00a0  \t\t\t\t\t\tAlmost told him that she\u2019d tried and utterly failed.\u00a0 It  \t\t\t\t\t\tdidn\u2019t matter.\u00a0 He was here now, he could handle it.\u00a0  \t\t\t\t\t\tHooray for him.\u00a0 No reason for her to sink another  \t\t\t\t\t\tcouple hundred dollars into this mess, no reason to take  \t\t\t\t\t\toff personal time and try to handle something that was  \t\t\t\t\t\tway beyond her reach, no reason to lay awake at night,  \t\t\t\t\t\tafraid to sleep because she feared the nightmares.<\/p>\n<p>Let him  \t\t\t\t\t\tdeal with this bullshit.\u00a0 That\u2019s what he was supposed to  \t\t\t\t\t\tdo.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Aren\u2019t you feeling bitchy today?<\/span><\/em> she thought darkly.\u00a0 Without another word, she grabbed  \t\t\t\t\t\tthe handle of her carryon and headed towards the  \t\t\t\t\t\tstaircase by the garage door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah,  \t\t\t\t\t\ttaking off when things get dicey, that\u2019s your way of  \t\t\t\t\t\thandling things,\u201d he said, sardonically, following along  \t\t\t\t\t\tbehind her.<\/p>\n<p>Too  \t\t\t\t\t\tclose, too.\u00a0 She could feel him, feel that big, warm  \t\t\t\t\t\tbody, the heat he put off, shadowing along close enough  \t\t\t\t\t\tthat he just lifted a hand, he\u2019d touch her.\u00a0 Halfway the  \t\t\t\t\t\tsteps, she stopped and shot him a narrow look over her  \t\t\t\t\t\tshoulder.\u00a0 \u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFollowing you.\u00a0 What are you doing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m  \t\t\t\t\t\tgoing to my apartment.\u00a0 I\u2019m tired.\u00a0 I want to take a  \t\t\t\t\t\tshower and go to bed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He  \t\t\t\t\t\tglanced over her shoulder towards the door at the top of  \t\t\t\t\t\tthe stairs.\u00a0 \u201cSorry, princess but you go some explaining  \t\t\t\t\t\tto do before you can go to bed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExplaining.\u201d\u00a0 Ana sighed and then started back up the  \t\t\t\t\t\tsteps.\u00a0 She\u2019d already tried explaining to him and he\u2019d  \t\t\t\t\t\tmocked her, laughed at her.\u00a0 Told her to handle it  \t\t\t\t\t\therself and she\u2019d tried, failed miserably, and now he  \t\t\t\t\t\twas here.\u00a0 Hell, that had likely been his plan all  \t\t\t\t\t\talong\u2014get her worked up and then show up in the flesh  \t\t\t\t\t\tand save the day.<\/p>\n<p>Of  \t\t\t\t\t\tcourse, she doubted he really would have expected her to  \t\t\t\t\t\tactually <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">try<\/span><\/em> to handle it.\u00a0 Abruptly, she  \t\t\t\t\t\twas pissed.<\/p>\n<p>Not just  \t\t\t\t\t\tirritated, not just tired and grouchy, and not just edgy  \t\t\t\t\t\tbecause she felt so damned guilty for what she\u2019d done to  \t\t\t\t\t\thim.\u00a0 She\u2019d made huge mistakes in her life, but damn it,  \t\t\t\t\t\tshe\u2019d done her best to rectify them and she was sick and  \t\t\t\t\t\tdamned tired of having to pay for it in their eyes.  \t\t\t\t\t\tSeething, she stormed up the rest of the stairs and  \t\t\t\t\t\tjammed her key into the lock, undoing the lock with a  \t\t\t\t\t\tvicious twist of her wrist.<\/p>\n<p>He  \t\t\t\t\t\tfollowed her inside and she shot him a dirty look as he  \t\t\t\t\t\tdropped down on the couch, settling down with lazy,  \t\t\t\t\t\tfeline grace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMake  \t\t\t\t\t\tyourself at home,\u201d she drawled.\u00a0 She left the carryon by  \t\t\t\t\t\tthe door and shut it, turning the lock on the doorknob  \t\t\t\t\t\tand then the deadbolt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose  \t\t\t\t\t\tlocks suck,\u201d he said, flicking a glance at her door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll  \t\t\t\t\t\tmake a note of it.\u201d\u00a0 Crossing her arms over her chest,  \t\t\t\t\t\tshe glared at him.\u00a0 \u201cWhatever you need me to explain,  \t\t\t\t\t\tfine.\u00a0 Ask away so I can explain and get your ass out of  \t\t\t\t\t\tmy home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A grin  \t\t\t\t\t\tcurled his lips.\u00a0 \u201cAna, you\u2019re swearing.\u00a0 What\u2019s got you  \t\t\t\t\t\tso pissed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not  \t\t\t\t\t\tpissed,\u201d she lied.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou  \t\t\t\t\t\tknow, even if you did do some kind of number on my  \t\t\t\t\t\tinstincts, I don\u2019t know why in the hell I ever fell for  \t\t\t\t\t\tany of your lines,\u201d he mused, shaking his head.\u00a0 \u201cYou\u2019re  \t\t\t\t\t\ta lousy liar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI  \t\t\t\t\t\tdidn\u2019t hand you <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">lines<\/span><\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 Then she wished  \t\t\t\t\t\tshe hadn\u2019t said a damn thing.\u00a0 The last thing she needed  \t\t\t\t\t\tto do was think about ancient history, not when he was  \t\t\t\t\t\there.\u00a0 Not when he was so close.\u00a0 Not when he could  \t\t\t\t\t\tsmell every subtle change in her body, whether it was  \t\t\t\t\t\tbecause she told a little white lie, or because her body  \t\t\t\t\t\twent all hot and achy with need, getting worse with very  \t\t\t\t\t\tdamn second he was there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSure  \t\t\t\t\t\tyou did.\u201d\u00a0 He came off the couch and paced towards her,  \t\t\t\t\t\tthat big, hard body all fluid, sexy grace and long,  \t\t\t\t\t\tpowerful muscles.\u00a0 His golden hair fell around his face  \t\t\t\t\t\tand his gray eyes glittered in the dim light.\u00a0 \u201cYou fed  \t\t\t\t\t\tme all sorts of lines and then I get a knife shoved into  \t\t\t\t\t\tmy chest and I wake up and find out the pretty blonde  \t\t\t\t\t\tprincess who had me twisted up inside was the puppet of  \t\t\t\t\t\ta fucking psycho.\u00a0 Maybe that\u2019s the difference\u2026when  \t\t\t\t\t\tsomebody\u2019s pulling your strings you do just as you\u2019re  \t\t\t\t\t\ttold.\u00a0 Did Cat tell you to get hot for me?\u00a0 Is that why  \t\t\t\t\t\tyou seemed to want me so bad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Stop it.<\/span><\/em> Duke stared at her, watched as the blood drained  from her  \t\t\t\t\t\tface, leaving her pale, her haunted, dark purple eyes  \t\t\t\t\t\tall but black.\u00a0 <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Stop. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Cat was  \t\t\t\t\t\tdead.\u00a0 She didn\u2019t fucking matter any more and if Ana was  \t\t\t\t\t\tany kind of threat to them, every single last Hunter  \t\t\t\t\t\taround would know.\u00a0 She\u2019d be watched\u2014or already dead.\u00a0  \t\t\t\t\t\tShe wasn\u2019t a threat and he knew it.\u00a0 At least not <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> that<\/span><\/em> kind of threat.\u00a0 Not any more.<\/p>\n<p>The kind  \t\t\t\t\t\tof threat she posed to <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">him<\/span><\/em> was a different  \t\t\t\t\t\tstory, but one didn\u2019t really have anything to do with  \t\t\t\t\t\tthe other.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019d  \t\t\t\t\t\tscrewed up and even Duke wasn\u2019t so blind to the fact  \t\t\t\t\t\tthat she had tried to make amends.\u00a0 She was guilty,  \t\t\t\t\t\tnever claimed otherwise, didn\u2019t offer excuses or any  \t\t\t\t\t\tother lame shit to try and help explain away what she\u2019d  \t\t\t\t\t\tdone.\u00a0 Even the more plausible reason\u2014her fear for her  \t\t\t\t\t\tbrother, she never used that card.<\/p>\n<p>If it  \t\t\t\t\t\twas anybody but Ana, he probably even could have found  \t\t\t\t\t\tsome reluctant admiration.<\/p>\n<p>But with  \t\t\t\t\t\tAna\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Even as  \t\t\t\t\t\the told himself to stop, to back away, find out what he  \t\t\t\t\t\tneeded to know and get the hell away from her, he  \t\t\t\t\t\tcouldn\u2019t.\u00a0 Even as he lifted a hand to touch her,  \t\t\t\t\t\tcurling it around her neck and tugging her close, he  \t\t\t\t\t\ttold himself to quit and he couldn\u2019t.\u00a0 \u201cNo answer, Ana?\u201d  \t\t\t\t\t\the whispered, rubbing his thumb across her full lower  \t\t\t\t\t\tlip.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Let it go\u2014none of that matters<\/span><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Except  \t\t\t\t\t\tit did.\u00a0 It <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">did<\/span><\/em> matter, why she\u2019d all but  \t\t\t\t\t\tmelted in his arms, melted around him, over him, so  \t\t\t\t\t\tdamned hot she\u2019d almost burned him.\u00a0 Had she really  \t\t\t\t\t\twanted him?\u00a0 Or had it been because she had psycho-bitch  \t\t\t\t\t\tpulling her strings?\u00a0 How deep had Cat\u2019s control on Ana  \t\t\t\t\t\tgone?<\/p>\n<p>She  \t\t\t\t\t\tshook, her body all but vibrating.\u00a0 She was afraid, he  \t\t\t\t\t\tcould scent it on her, but it wasn\u2019t just fear.\u00a0 His  \t\t\t\t\t\tlids drooped over his eyes, a growl rumbling in his  \t\t\t\t\t\tchest, as he realized he had his answer right there.<\/p>\n<p>Ana  \t\t\t\t\t\tdidn\u2019t have to say a damn thing.<\/p>\n<p>She  \t\t\t\t\t\twanted him.\u00a0 All but burned with it.<\/p>\n<p>It was  \t\t\t\t\t\tenough to make his mouth water and his cock swell.  \t\t\t\t\t\tEnough to make him want to haul her against him and  \t\t\t\t\t\tfinish the dance they\u2019d started five years earlier.\u00a0 He  \t\t\t\t\t\tdidn\u2019t, though.\u00a0 Because of her fear.
