\u201cUs?\u201d\u00a0 She laughed hollowly as she turned to face him.\u00a0 \u201cThere is no us, remember?\u00a0 You said that.\u00a0 There\u2019s me\u2026and there\u2019s you\u2026and sometimes we\u2019re together, but there\u2019s no us.\u201d<\/p>\n

His gaze held hers.\u00a0 \u201cI never wanted it to be that way.\u00a0 And maybe there was more of an us than I realized.\u00a0 Seeing you\u2026\u201d he paused, took a deep breath.\u00a0 \u201cSeeing you just drives that home.\u201d<\/p>\n

Those intense, hypnotic eyes held hers.\u00a0 Her heart kicked up a few beats, stealing her breath away.\u00a0 As he started to dip his head, Shay stood there, frozen.\u00a0 Shit.\u00a0 What now\u2026<\/p>\n

His mouth, so warm, brushed against hers.\u00a0 She gasped and then almost wished she hadn\u2019t as he used that opportunity to tease the inside of her lips with his tongue, moving deeper and deeper.\u00a0 His hands came around her waist, tugging her closer.<\/p>\n

This is a bad idea<\/em>\u2026<\/p>\n

The warning was already screaming in her head.\u00a0 She couldn\u2019t give him what he needed.\u00a0 And he couldn\u2019t accept what she had to give.\u00a0 They would just hurt each other again\u2014<\/p>\n

Tearing her mouth away, Shay ducked to the side.\u00a0 \u201cWe\u2026we can\u2019t do this.\u201d She pressed a hand to her buzzing lips.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m just getting to where I\u2019m used to going through the days without you calling.\u00a0 I\u2019m just getting to where I can pass a few nights without dreaming about you.\u201d\u00a0 Liar<\/em>\u2014<\/p>\n

Well, she did manage to go a few nights, she told herself.\u00a0 Usually, on those nights, she had nightmares, but so what?\u00a0 She wasn\u2019t dreaming of Elliot and that was all that counted, right?<\/p>\n

\u201cShay\u2026\u201d\u00a0 He reached up and touched her shoulder.<\/p>\n

But she didn\u2019t want to hear what he had to say. She wasn\u2019t going through this again.\u00a0 He needed things she couldn\u2019t give him\u2026and it hurt.\u00a0 She wasn\u2019t whole inside and she had to accept that and stop pretending otherwise, and it fucking hurt.<\/p>\n

Stooping down, she grabbed the basket of books from where he\u2019d placed them on the floor.\u00a0 Without looking back at him, she headed for the front of the store.<\/p>\n

She had to get out of here.\u00a0 She could pay for her damn books and meet Lorna at the caf\u00e9.\u00a0 It was two doors down\u2014she could walk two fucking doors.<\/p>\n

Maybe not well.\u00a0 She was already weaving a little, lethargy and weakness still pervading her body, but she damn well wasn\u2019t going to linger around\u2014<\/p>\n

She stumbled, her feet all but giving out under her.\u00a0 Crashing into a book dump just next to her, she flung out a hand, but there was nothing to grab.\u00a0 Books from the display went flying and just before she would have crashed to the floor, a pair of strong, steady hands gripped her waist.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019ve got you,\u201d Elliot murmured.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve got you<\/em>\u2026<\/p>\n

The room stopped spinning around her, even though her legs still felt like spaghetti noodles.\u00a0 Her heart slowed back down to its normal speed for a few seconds, before embarrassment settled in.\u00a0 Swallowing, she closed her eyes and reached for some level of control.<\/p>\n

Stumbling all over the place.<\/p>\n

Running away from Elliot.<\/p>\n

She needed to get herself together.<\/p>\n

Sucking in a desperate drought of air, she blew it back out.\u00a0 Carefully, she eased away from Elliot, checking her legs\u2014okay, she could walk.\u00a0 This was good.<\/p>\n

This was…bad.\u00a0 Grimacing at the bookdump she\u2019d knocked over, she opened her mouth to apologize.\u00a0 The display had been holding a lot of books, she thought inanely.\u00a0 Foil lettering on one of them caught her eyes.<\/p>\n

Lettering the shade of blood.<\/p>\n

Familiar\u2026<\/p>\n

Her stomach dropped to her knees, and the waning strength in her abused body disappeared completely.\u00a0 Sinking to her knees, she reached out to touch one of the books.<\/p>\n

\u201cShay, I\u2019ll pick it up,\u201d Elliot said.<\/p>\n

His voice seemed to come to her from a tunnel.\u00a0 Her blood roared in her ears and black dots danced in front of her eyes for a long, ugly second.\u00a0 Stop it, Shay\u2014breathe<\/em>!<\/p>\n

No more panic attacks. She didn\u2019t do panic attacks any more.<\/p>\n

But then again, she\u2019d never found herself holding one of her books in her hands\u2014a book she had written\u2014with a gold foil sticker on the top corner that read, Signed by the author<\/em>!<\/p>\n

Touching that sticker, she swallowed.<\/p>\n
