\"\"<\/a>Veil Book 1<\/h4>\n

Found wandering in a \t\t\t\tfield as a child, Lee Ross was given a name by the state and \t\t\t\tplaced in a foster home\u2013without anyone realizing she wasn\u2019t \t\t\t\tentirely human. All her life, she\u2019s tried to dismiss the odd \t\t\t\tdreams that have plagued her, dreams of monsters creeping \t\t\t\tthrough the night and a man, fighting demons by her side. But \t\t\t\tthe bruises she wakes up with are all too real to ignore<\/p>\n

Then the man from dreams appears in the flesh. His name is Kalen \t\t\t\tand he insists that her destiny lies in his world, the world of \t\t\t\ther dreams.<\/p>\n

To save their people, he must convince Lee to give \t\t\t\teverything she knows, follow her heart and cross into the Under \t\t\t\tRealm, even though once she does, she\u2019ll never be able to \t\t\t\treturn.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Lee shook her head. \u201cMagick isn\u2019t real.\u201d She licked her lips as \t\t\t\tshe said it and wondered why those words felt so\u2026wrong.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think you know it is.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thinking made the pain in her head worse, she decided as she \t\t\t\tsquinted at him. \u201cYou are confusing the hell out of me.\u201d<\/p>\n

He leaned forward and she found her eyes lingering on the bulge \t\t\t\tof muscle in his arm. Another memory surfaced. His hands on her \t\t\t\tbody. His mouth on hers. She had kissed him, had wrapped herself \t\t\t\taround his body like she wanted to crawl inside him. And he\u2019d \t\t\t\tkissed her back with the same hunger. Blood rushed to her cheeks \t\t\t\tand she dragged her eyes away from his muscles, forcing herself \t\t\t\tto focus on his eyes. But the dancing light there had her \t\t\t\tgroaning. He knew, exactly, what thoughts were running through \t\t\t\ther mind.<\/p>\n

Gingerly, she rolled onto her belly and buried her head in her \t\t\t\tarms. Even that was enough to make that bright, throbbing pain \t\t\t\tdouble in intensity. She moaned her way through it and as the \t\t\t\twave of pain peaked and then ebbed away, she muttered, \u201cWhy is \t\t\t\tthis happening to me?\u201d<\/p>\n

His fingers, long and warm, came up to stroke down her neck, \t\t\t\tbefore he settled into a soothing massage. She could have \t\t\t\twhimpered as he worked the tense muscles until they felt about \t\t\t\tas loose as putty. \u201cI have no answer to that. At least, none \t\t\t\tthat I could explain. But you belong here. How you managed to \t\t\t\tget from our world, to the one you call home, and then back\u2014I \t\t\t\thave no explanation.\u201d<\/p>\n

A \t\t\t\tlong moment of silence passed and he sighed. \u201cBut you have a \t\t\t\tgreat deal of power within you. The creatures from Anqar are \t\t\t\tattracted to power. Without strong protectors, a great many \t\t\t\tchildren with gifts like yours die before they even reach \t\t\t\tpuberty. Die or are taken. So however you ended up in that \t\t\t\tworld, it was a blessing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is Anqar?\u201d she asked. But before he could answer, a flash \t\t\t\tof pain exploded behind her eyes and she had to stifle her \t\t\t\twhimper in the odd feeling mattress beneath her. \u201cDamn it, my \t\t\t\thead\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cRoll over,\u201d he ordered gently.<\/p>\n

She resisted and his hands came up and carefully, but \t\t\t\tforcefully, turned her onto her back. \u201cThis will help.\u201d His \t\t\t\tvoice sounded odd, tinny, as though he was speaking to her \t\t\t\tthrough a tunnel as he touched his fingers to the middle of her \t\t\t\tbrow. Almost instantly, cool, sweet relief started to ease the \t\t\t\tpain inside her head. After a few minutes passed and the pain \t\t\t\thad all but abated, Lee chanced opening one eye and looking up \t\t\t\tat him.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you magick?\u201d Touching her fingers, to her brow, she felt \t\t\t\tsomething small and smooth against her skin, something disc \t\t\t\tshaped. And to her touch, it felt cool.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s medicine,\u201d Kalen responded with a faint grin. \u201cNo magick \t\t\t\tneeded. I should have not even waited until you woke. There is \t\t\t\tsome tea you need to drink. It will settle the nausea in your \t\t\t\tbelly, and help your strength to return faster.\u201d<\/p>\n

She closed her eyes, sighing blissfully and murmured, \u201cIf it \t\t\t\tworks as well as this, give me a gallon of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Moments later, though, as he forced the cup back to her lips, \t\t\t\tshe pressed against his wrist and snapped, \u201cThat tastes \t\t\t\tdisgusting.\u201d She would have thrown it, except he wouldn\u2019t let \t\t\t\ther. The taste of it coated her tongue, seemed to cling to her \t\t\t\tthroat. Sewer water would have tasted better. It was bitter, \t\t\t\tpungent and there was a faint moldy taste to it, like something \t\t\t\tin it should have been pitched ages ago. He pushed it towards \t\t\t\ther again and she turned her head. \u201cGet that crap away from me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kalen arched a brow and said, \u201cThe sooner your energy comes \t\t\t\tback, the sooner those headaches will stop. That pain patch will \t\t\t\tnot stop them forever.\u201d<\/p>\n

With a curl of her lip, she said, \u201cI\u2019ll just use the patches, \t\t\t\tthank you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Turning her head away, she started to lay back down, only to \t\t\t\thave him fist a hand in her hair and jerk her head back. She \t\t\t\tgagged on the tea while he literally poured down her throat. \t\t\t\tChoking on the vile stuff, Lee jerked against his hold. When he \t\t\t\tfinally let go, she spat what remained in her mouth out at him, \t\t\t\tgasping and rubbing at her stinging eyes. \u201cYou jack ass!\u201d she \t\t\t\tshouted in between coughing fits.<\/p>\n

\u201cNext time, maybe you\u2019ll drink it on your own,\u201d he responded \t\t\t\tlevelly.<\/p>\n

\u201cNext time, you can kiss my ass,\u201d she wheezed out, snatching the \t\t\t\tcup of water he held out to her. At least, she hoped it was \t\t\t\twater. Water or cyanide. Right then, she couldn\u2019t decide which \t\t\t\tshe\u2019d prefer. It was just water, though, cold and oddly sweet. \t\t\t\tShe downed half of it before shoving the cup back at him and \t\t\t\tflopping down on the bed.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would be rather happy to.\u201d A cold cloth wiped over her face \t\t\t\tand her eyes flew open as she batted his hand away.<\/p>\n

\u201cHappy to what?\u201d She rolled onto her belly and buried her face \t\t\t\tin the mattress. She would have cut her arm off before she \t\t\t\tadmitted the churning in her belly had eased.<\/p>\n

He slid a hand down her back and Lee tensed as that hand cupped \t\t\t\tthe curve of her butt. His hair fell down around them when he \t\t\t\tbent over her, sliding along her bare arms as he murmured, \u201cYou \t\t\t\tsuggested that next time I could kiss your ass.\u201d Through her \t\t\t\tthin pajamas, she could feel the heat and strength of his hand \t\t\t\ton her ass. He squeezed lightly and she had to clamp her mouth \t\t\t\tshut to keep from sighing a little. \u201cI would be happy to.\u201d<\/p>\n
