Steven was \twhole, if not healthy.\u00a0 His eyes were sunken in his face, his skin sallow, \tbody unwashed.\u00a0 He stank to high heaven, and they hadn\u2019t been feeding him \tenough to maintain the high metabolism all werewolves had.<\/p>\n

His eyes looked at Roman blankly for \tthe longest moment and then he stumbled forward, rasping out, \u201cAbout damn \ttime.\u201d<\/p>\n

Roman caught him, kept him upright \tas his legs started to buckle, fury ripping through him.\u00a0 \u201cTaking good care \tof you, were they?\u201d he snarled, his control falling to shreds as he felt the \tanguish in Steven\u2019s mind, anguish he was trying to hide.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, you did warn me,\u201d Steven \tsaid, forcing a smile.\u00a0 His lips were dry and cracked, and blood welled as \tthe skin split further.<\/p>\n

A soft voice said, \u201cVampires are not \tknown for their hospitality.\u00a0 Especially not Capiet. They consider him still \talive and able to talk quite enough.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s been being starved.\u201d\u00a0 Roman\u2019s \tvoice had deepened warningly, and he stared at the sky, trying to force his \trabid anger under control.\u00a0 Jenner took Steven in his arms, sending Roman a \twarning glance.<\/p>\n

He was failing, badly, to keep his \tanger in control.\u00a0 Sucking badly needed air into his lungs, he summoned \tevery last bit of his willpower and throttled the rage into submission.<\/p>\n

Turning his eyes to Julianna, he \tsaid, \u201cThank you for bringing Steven to me.\u00a0 I hope someday I can repay \tthis.\u201d<\/p>\n

She shook her head.\u00a0 \u201cYou don\u2019t need \tto.\u00a0 If Eduard wasn\u2019t who he was, this wouldn\u2019t have happened.\u201d<\/p>\n

He arched a brow at her, closing the \tdistance between them to cup her chin and lift her face to his.\u00a0 \u201cYes.\u00a0 And \tI hope you can keep in mind that if Eduard wasn\u2019t who he was, then neither \twould this have happened.\u201d\u00a0 The confusion darkened her eyes as she stared \tinto his eyes, never down.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t until he took her hands \tthat she glanced down.\u00a0 She was quick, he had to give her that.\u00a0 And if she \twas fully vampire, then he never would have been able to secure her wrists \twith the handcuffs.\u00a0 Spinning her around, he tied a gag around her face, \tslipping it between her lips as she opened her mouth to scream.<\/p>\n

Lowering his head, he whispered, \t\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u00a0 But know this, I\u2019ll take far better care of you<\/em> then \tthey took of my brother.\u201d<\/p>\n

She turned slowly in his arms, and \tthe fiery blue gaze she directed him had him flinching inwardly.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m \tsorry,\u201d he repeated.<\/p>\n
