Brotherhood of the Rose

So, I met David Morrell at RT. Twice.  Actually chatted with him in line for a little while and didn’t make a doofus of myself the second time.

David Morrell wrote FIRST BLOOD…Rambo, guys.  He created Rambo!

I got a copy of THE BROTHEDHOOD OF THE ROSE and pretty much gobbled it down.

It’s awesome.  If you read outside romance, check it out. :)

In the Provincial Union of Victoriana, a steampunk America that lost the Revolutionary War, Charmian “Kit” Kittredge makes her living investigating crimes of magic. While Kit tries to avoid the nobs of high society, she follows mysteries wherever they lead.

Unlike most folks, Kit doesn’t believe in magic, but she can’t refuse to help Lady Diana Walsh, who claims a curse is viciously wounding her while she sleeps. As Kit investigates the Walsh family, she becomes convinced that the attacks are part of a more ominous plot—one that may involve the lady’s obnoxious husband.

Sleuthing in the city of Rumsen is difficult enough, but soon Kit must also skirt the unwanted attentions of a nefarious deathmage and the unwelcome scrutiny of the police chief inspector. Unwilling to surrender to either man’s passion for her, Kit struggles to remain independent as she draws closer to the heart of the mystery. For the truth promises to ruin her life—and turn Rumsen into a supernatural battleground from which no one will escape alive.

Good book. Go read it

I just started it last night and if I didn’t have willpower deadlines, I’d be doing nothing but reading today.

I’ve talked with the author briefly on twitter, met him at Confusion and he’s pretty cool.  I’ve been meaning to read his book and after I met him, bumped it on my list.  Now I should regret not reading it sooner.

If it’s SF.  If that’s not your thing, read it anyway. ;)  How many times have I pushed the Stardoc books on people?

tao

When out-of-shape IT technician Roen woke up and started hearing voices in his head, he naturally assumed he was losing it.

He wasn’t.

He now has a passenger in his brain – an ancient alien life-form called Tao, whose race crash-landed on Earth before the first fish crawled out of the oceans. Now split into two opposing factions – the peace-loving, but under-represented Prophus, and the savage, powerful Genjix – the aliens have been in a state of civil war for centuries. Both sides are searching for a way off-planet, and the Genjix will sacrifice the entire human race, if that’s what it takes.

Meanwhile, Roen is having to train to be the ultimate secret agent. Like that’s going to end up well…

Some excellent books lately

I’ve done reading lately… I can’t seem to get enough books in. I think I’ve read like a dozen in the past month. These are a few of them and they’ve all been good. I’m reading in snatches at night, missing out on sleep – plus I gorged when I was sick the weekend before Christmas.

Loved this…loved her Black Jewels books so it’s not a surprise I liked this.  It’s definitely different from the Black Jewels, but the writing is just as intense.

One for Me, One for You

Yes!  Lynn Viehl’s new book is out!

ladyship

In a steampunk version of America that lost the Revolutionary War, Charmian (Kit) Kittredge makes her living investigating magic crimes and exposing the frauds behind them. While Kit tries to avoid the nobs of high society, as the proprietor of Disenchanted & Co. she follows mysteries wherever they lead.

Lady Diana Walsh calls on Kit to investigate and dispel the curse she believes responsible for carving hateful words into her own flesh as she sleeps. While Kit doesn’t believe in magic herself, she can’t refuse to help a woman subjected nightly to such vicious assaults. As Kit investigates the Walsh family, she becomes convinced that the attacks on Diana are part of a larger, more ominous plot—one that may involve the lady’s obnoxious husband.

Sleuthing in the city of Rumsen is difficult enough, but soon Kit must also skirt the unwanted attentions of nefarious deathmage Lucien Dredmore and the unwelcome scrutiny of police Chief Inspector Thomas Doyle. Unwilling to surrender to either man’s passion for her, Kit struggles to remain independent as she draws closer to the heart of the mystery. Yet as she learns the truth behind her ladyship’s curse, Kit also uncovers a massive conspiracy that promises to ruin her life—and turn Rumsen into a s supernatural battleground from which no one will escape alive.

I’m a Lynn Viehl fiend.  I just bought this and I’m going to buy another copy…one for somebody else, to make another fiend.  Want it?  Just leave a comment and tell me whether or not you’ve read one of her books… as Lynn, as S.L Viehl, as Gena, Jessica, (she has many names…) O.O.

FYI, because of territory issues and the hassles I’ve previously had with with books not readily available in some countries, I’m restricting this contest to countries that have Amazon… if you’re in the US, you’re welcome to request BN. If you don’t have Amazon, there are no substitutions and I can’t send you a file or print book, so please don’t enter. At some point, itunes will hopefully make it as easy to gift a book as Amazon does, but it hasn’t happened yet that I can tell, so we’re going with Amazon.

It looks like it’s available in US, Spain, Canada, the UK, France, Italy, Germany, Japan, so if you’re in those countries, have at it! If not, I do apologize, but territory issues are something I have no control over and neither does the author.

Please read the disclaimer...winner will be posted later this week and you have to check back to see if you’ve won.  I don’t email my winners.

Passing on the love…

Recently two of my children has discovered the love of two books that I love madly.

Baby bratlet discovered this one…

And Bratlet read this one…(devoured it more like it)

Monster, of course, keeps reading the same things…over and over…normally game guides…and this.

Now if only I can find something that’s like Harry Potter… just harder. Cuz as awesome as Harry is, eventually he needs to try other things…

Friday 56

Hey all, we made it to another Friday. So time for the Friday 56.

Mine this week is Blood Trinity, the first in Sherrilyn Kenyon and co-author Dianna Love’s new UF series:

Even though he was a pain in the butt and made her work for every piece of intel she squeezed out of the old ghoul, he was one of the best informants when it came to anything supernatural.

To participate, just grab the closest (doesn’t have to be what you’re currently reading) book, turn to page 56 and give us the 5th sentence.  You’re welcome to post a few more, if you’d like, too :).   Happy Friday!

Whatcha Reading?

The summer has been so crazy, between vacation and trying to catch up with deadlines and stuff, I haven’t been able to pay attention the books that are coming out.

I’ve done some reading, although most of it is stuff that’s been on my TBR or faves shelves.

I’ve read…

Yeah, yeah, the Ilona Andrews books are re-reads, but I’m trying to tide myself over until another one comes out, what can I say? Dead in the Delta was okay. Chasing Fire was pretty good. Not my fave Nora, but I’ve got so many faves by here, it’s getting hard to knock those faves down. But it was good.

So what are you reading?
