Through the Veil~A Contest For Bloggers

Kindle

Posted yesterday on the Vamps and Scamps site…open for the next few days. I’ll notify winners.

veil400x600.jpg

I usually try to keep my contests open for everybody, but I’m trying to help spread the word about my summer release, Through the Veil. Since blogs are a wonderful way of spreading the word, I’m going to do a contest just for bloggers.

This contest involves an ARC (Advance Reader’s Copy) and a promise. The ARC comes from me, the promise comes from you. The winners simply need to agree to post a review on your blog (Yes, MySpace blogs are fine) of Through the Veil sometime the last two weeks of May.

I don’t get too many ARCs so I do kind of want your promise to do the review. I know life sometimes happens, and hey, that’s cool. But if you think you’re likely to just add the book to your TBR pile, I’d ask that you not enter. If you don’t like writing reviews on books you didn’t care for, I’d ask that you not enter.

I do want an honest review, whether you love it or not. However there’s a chance you might not like the book and I want a review whether you like it or not… *G* the power of word of mouth. Some people only review books they like, that’s absolutely fine…but again, I want an honest review, love it or hate it.

Since I only get a limited number of these things, I want to make sure they are being put to the best use possible. If this contest goes well, I may continue to do it in the future, with both ebooks and print books.

So did I make that complicated enough? ;-)

Basically, the contest rules are this:

  • You must have an established blog. Established as in being used prior to this post, and on a fairly regular basis.
  • You agree to post an honest review of the book on your blog. Honest=as in your thoughts, whether you like it or not.

The blurb…

Found wandering in a field as a child, Lee Ross was given a name by the state and placed in a foster home–without anyone realizing she wasn’t entirely human. All her life, she’s tried to dismiss the odd dreams that have plagued her, dreams of monsters creeping through the night and a man, fighting demons by her side. But the bruises she wakes up with are all too real to ignore

Then the man from dreams appears in the flesh. His name is Kalen and he insists that her destiny lies in his world, the world of her dreams. To save their people, he must convince Lee to give everything she knows, follow her heart and cross into the Under Realm, even though once she does, she’ll never be able to return.

An excerpt can be found here.

Just a side note, I’ve seen a few references that this is part of my Hunters books and it is not. Veil is not related to the Hunters world at all. If you’re interested, send an email to shiloh_ @ shilohwalker.com NO SPACES, put “BLOG CONTEST” in the subject line, and make sure to include your blog url in the subject line.

I plan on drawing a couple of winners, how many, I don’t know yet. Outside the States? That’s fine. Enter away.

**Edited to add… it’s best if you request a ‘return receipt’ . I’m sorry, but I don’t have time to respond to each individual entry for a contest like this.

This contest is now over. Names to be posted shortly. To prevent confusion, this thread is now closed to comments.

My newest, favoritest toy

Kindle
It’s so pretty…My newest and bestest friend.

Photobucket

Don’t hate her because she’s beautiful. She’s also very clever. Very classy. She fits in this neat little pocket of my purse and since she came into my life, my reading has gone through the roof.

So far, I’ve read…

  • Grimspace Ann Aguirre. Fricking fantastic.
  • Skin to Skin by Dionne Galace. Hot, fun romp.
  • Ember by Bettie Sharpe. A re-read, but man, oh man what a wonderful re-read.
  • Into the Mist by Maya Banks. My first from her. Great plot. Definitely interested in more.

So in the week since I’ve had my newest, bestest friend, I’ve read about the same amount I usually read in a month. She’s just so easy. She works at the gym. In the car waiting to pick up the monster from Kindergarten. Grabbing a few quick pages while cooking dinner, or killing time at the in-laws. A paperback doesn’t work as good at the gym. I can’t keep paperbacks in my purse, I tear them up. I could grab a few minutes while cooking dinner, but my newest friend is just so much easier than a paperback.

My Sony reader is my newest, bestest friend, and no, you can’t have her.

Edits

Kindle

Questions I hear a lot about books, mine or others. Usually others. ;) Not too many foaming at the mouth over mine yet.

Why does it take so long…

Why can’t we get them sooner?

Can you write faster?

One answer to all three is edits. Getting a book from written to on the stands is a time consuming process.

Last year, I turned in my manuscript of Through the Veil.

Towards the end of December, I got the galley edits for the book. At this time, I’ve got a couple of weeks to go through and do any needed rewrites, clarifications, or address any issues the editor has.

I mail them back.

On Monday Feb 18, I got the first pass edits. This basically is my last chance to look through the book before it’s put into print. No rewrites here. This is line editing, making sure I dotted my I’s, crossed my T’s (so to speak) and remembered to use all those little words like do, and, the, be…words I don’t always remember in the heat of writing.

I’ve got until the beginning of March, three months before the book releases, to get these done and sent back in. From then, I assume it goes to printer, gets printed, bound, etc, etc, etc. Then shipping and all that jazz.

Writing isn’t always the time consuming part. But getting the book from written to edited to printed to shipped to released can be.

Grimspace

Kindle

grimspace_sm.jpg

It finally happened.

I finally found a science fiction series that appeals to me as much as Stardoc.

Grimspace by Ann Aguirre, which releases today.

And the book is written in first person. I very rarely can get into first person.

Ann and I did a trade. She gave me Grimspace and when I get my e-ARCs of Through the Veil done, I’m sending one of those her way. But now I’m wondering if I rush and get an e-ARC done, if maybe she’d send me her next one if I gave her Through the Veil now. Dunno if she wants it that much, but I definitely want the next Jax book.

I suck at reviews~I’m lousy at explaining just what/why/how a book appeals to me, but I do know when I like one. And I definitely like this. ;-) It’s one of the test drives on my nifty new Sony reader.

Photobucket

If you’re a SF fan, buy Grimspace. I’ll bet you love it. Now, I’m going to get back to my new toy and my new book.

Drastic Measures

Kindle

Photobucket
And here’s another new cover…

Drastic Measures is going into the EXOTICA line, but it’s still a romance. The main reason it’s going into the EXOTICA line is because it ends with a HFN or Happy-for-now, the heroine just on the verge of falling in love instead of making that open declaration.

Some background on the story~ the heroine, Pam, just found out that her fiancé owes some serious money to his business partner. Her fiancé, Shawn, had the brilliant idea of using her club as the collateral.

Enter the business partner, a sexy guy by the name of Ethan. Ethan is ready to call in that loan, but knowing Shawn probably doesn’t have the cash on hand, he offers one other option. He just wants Pam for a night. Nah, this isn’t some Robert Redford/Demi Moore/Indecent Proposal deal.

Ethan doesn’t expect Pam to sleep with him. He just wants a couple hours with her when she doesn’t take off running in the other direction. That’s all he wants.

Pam doesn’t like be used, doesn’t like the position she’s put in, and she’s seriously pissed with her fiancé, who shortly become ex-fiancé, but she also doesn’t want to risk losing her club. So she agrees to the one night.

They both end up getting more than they bargained for.

~*~*~

Three days later, Pam entered her office to find a huge crystal vase on her desk. There were easily two dozen roses in it—pale, pale roses that seemed white from a distance but as she got closer, she saw that they were actually the palest, creamiest shade of pink.

The petals felt satiny against her fingers when she touched them. She scowled a little. Shawn wasn’t prone to romantic gestures, even when he was in the wrong, so it was going to really suck throwing these out. It was the principal of the thing, though. It had been three days since she’d given back his ring and he’d been calling regularly. Pam had ignored the calls but it wasn’t going to be so easy to ignore the roses. She found the card and opened it, already formulating the message she’d have somebody pass on to Shawn the next time he called.

But it wasn’t from Shawn.

The card read simply:

Wear the dress.

Tonight at 7 a car will pick you up at the club.

Ethan

Her first instinct was to tear the card into two thousand microscopic pieces. Her second was to take the roses and hurl them, crystal vase and all, against the wall. And her third instinct was…what dress?

The Bash, she realized. It was already time for the Bash…and this damned ‘date’. Damn it. The Bash. Pam hadn’t wanted to think about the Bash and for the past three days and she’d done a damn fine job of doing just that. She’d made arrangements for tonight, though. She might be burying her hand in the sand about the actual event but she’d made the preparations to have the night off.

She had a dress at home she planned on wearing and once she got her work done here, she’d leave the club in the capable hands of Sam and Maya, the club’s manager. Time enough to take a bath, get dressed…

The dress.

“What dress?” she muttered as she glanced around automatically and that was when she saw the box on her desk. It was so damn big that she wondered how she could have missed it. She recognized the name on the lid and blinked, a little startled. It was from a designer boutique that sold dresses worth more than her entire wardrobe.

At home, she had laid out a black velvet dress that she had bought for the few formal things she attended. Simple, basic, elegant—it was pretty much the only thing she owned for this sort of thing and she’d be damned if she went and splurged on something for this…this…blackmail.

Probably something pink. Or red. She hated red, made her skin look a little too rosy and pink. She really, really didn’t like pink. Already irritated, she started to work the lid off. She had no qualms with others wearing it and chances were there would be a dozen other women, at least, wearing some shade of pink tonight but she just wasn’t—

Damn! When she first caught sight of the dress, she gasped. Her eyes widened at the green silk dress and unwittingly, she reached out and touched it.

One thing she had worked on really hard over the past three days was to not think about Ethan. In any way. At all. But now, she couldn’t help it. This was really going to happen.

Her belly pitched and she sagged against her desk, staring at the dress. Then she looked up and stared around the club. Was she really going to do this?

Part of her shouted, No. You can’t do this.

The other part kept remembering Shawn’s face as he’d said, It’s not like you have to sleep with him or anything.

She couldn’t get rid of the feeling though, that that was exactly what Shawn wanted her to do. He wanted her to do whatever Ethan asked of her so the man would wipe Shawn’s debt clean. Shawn was good with money but he was also greedy. A night that would erase a quarter of million dollar debt…

Her gut knotted as she realized the ramifications of that. Yeah, Ethan had a lot of money. He was good with it. Everything he touched turned to gold. But he was willing to write off that loan for a night with her. Her. Pam was short, on the plump side and while she wasn’t unattractive, she’d never be much more than cute. She wore her blonde hair long because keeping it short required more trips to the salon that she cared to make. She burned in the sun so she was always pale. Her skin seemed to blush pink with even the slightest emotion and her green eyes always looked a little surprised, in her opinion.

Nothing special.

So why the hell was Ethan Parker willing to let go of that kind of money for a night with her?

“Oh, shit.” She pressed a hand against her belly to still the nerves dancing around in there and then she looked at the clock. Three hours.

Her hands shook a little as she lifted the dress out and held it against her. Slowly she turned and stared at the mirror that hung over the couch on the opposite side of her office. The green seemed to glow against her skin and she looked even paler than usual. Of course, that could be because she was scared to death.

“You really are going to do this,” she whispered.

Part of her wanted to insist it was because she didn’t have much of a choice.

Part of her wanted to insist she was doing this because she didn’t want to lose
the club.

But deep inside, she knew that wasn’t the only reason. She wanted to know exactly why the hell Ethan Parker wanted a night with her, of all people.

What was I thinking…

Kindle

Okay, logically I knew when I decided to go to Romantic Times ’08 convention, I was going to have to plan on some promo.

I needed to think up some cool idea for a give-aways, and I needed to think of some clever ideas to give the booksellers.

Problem.

I suck at thinking of these things. I don’t want to do bookmarks or notepads or stuff that doesn’t last. But…well, I can’t call me frugal, I’m not, but I hate plunking out huge sums of money for promo items. I’d rather buy books. Or buy a GC for a contest. Or a couple of nifty PC programs that I just know will come in handy for something. I just don’t know what yet.

So why didn’t I think about how much I hate messing with promo before now?

Spent the weekend going blind on the internet trying to think of the perfect thing. I never thought of the perfect little gift, but I did finally find a cute couple of somethings for the two separate parties I’m hosting, along with several other authors.

Me. Hosting something. Whodathunkit?

13 Promo Ideas I Vetoed

Kindle

I spent a very long weekend going blind looking for promo stuff and in effort to cheer myself up, I found myself at PBW’s blog re-reading her WIDGETS FROM HELL post. About promo, naturally.

So here’s my list of things I’m going to avoid…an unofficial Thursday Thirteen…unofficial because I don’t have time to keep up with the commenters and go check out their blogs, not today. So unofficial.

  1. Candy shaped like body parts. Any body parts. I’m sorry, but I really don’t wanna eat a sucker shaped like a penis.
  2. Cheap nail files. The emery boards don’t work for me…I have thick nails so if I want it to do me any good, it needs to be a decent nail file. But decent = costs more.
  3. Stuffed animals. I have three kids…you know how many stuffed animals are in this house? Me neither and I’m scared to check.  I can’t be the only mama in this boat.
  4. Hats. Never wear them. Yeah, I know this isn’t for me, but I figure if it’s something I’d end up tossing if somebody gave it to me, maybe I’m better off not using it as one of my promo items.
  5. Sticky notes. Most of these conventions are places we have to travel to. A million and one sticky note pads won’t be much fun to pack.
  6. Water bottles. I have too many of them. I have no room for glasses because of all the water bottles~and it’s also one I’ve seen lots of.  Nope, I want something different.
  7. Makeup. Of any sort. I’ve gotten some as promo items and it’s something I end up throwing out. I’m not going to give somebody a promo gift that might break them out in rash. They may never forget my name, but not the impression I wanna make.
  8. Drink koozies. I never once used one of these. And yes, I’ve gotten many. How many koozies does a person need?
  9. Ice scraper. So far nobody’s given me one of these as a promo item, but I see them at a lot of the sites I hit. Great for a used car place. Romance author? Not so much.
  10. Candy. Whether it’s shaped like a body part or not. There is always so much candy at these things…I’ve lost 15 lbs, I’m not putting it back on by buying candy for readers that I end up eating. ;-)
  11. Stress balls. Got pets? If so, then you may know already that dogs really like to eat these things. I’d hate to give one to somebody and then it ended up being Rover’s midnight snack. When Rover’s mama was cleaning up the mess, she wouldn’t be thanking me.
  12. Condoms. Too many readers are mamas. Unpacking from these things, I’ve found unusual items that I had to scurry to get put away before rotten ones saw them. Too big a headache. Besides, I’m married~I wouldn’t use them…back to that rule If I don’t find it useful, will others? Nope, not everybody’s married, but I doubt they need me helping them in the safe-sex department.
  13. Bookmarks. Yes…bookmarks. I’ll probably take some of the ones I already have to RT with me, but I doubt I’ll mess with ordering more. Bookmarks get handed out by the dozen. I hate being lost in a crowd. ;-)

Buckling down

Kindle

So on March 1, the next round of 70 Days of Sweat starts.

The past two rounds have really done me a lot of good. For some reason, when I know I’ve gotta speak and say Hey, I got this much done…or worse…Uh, I didn’t get much done at all, it helps me to focus.

I’ve also got RT coming up in April, so I’m planning on making some serious headway on my deadlines. The projects I’ve got worked out for this round are

  • Chains (single author erotic romance antho for Berkley)-it’s at 20k. Needs to 90k. But will probably be longer.
  • VV (working title, paranormal romance for EC) goal word count 30k.
  • untitled paranormal for Samhain goal word count 30k

So I got plenty to keep me busy. I’m not going into hiding on the blog, but if I’m not posting as much, or if I’m not out in blogland as much, it’s just because I need to get this stuff done.

We’re talking a possible trip to Alaska for our family vacation this summer and I think I’ll enjoy myself more if I get these out of the way. ;)

New cover, old story

Kindle

Photobucket
Pretty new cover… Syneca did an excellent job.

I actually have a couple of new covers to share but I’m going to drag it out. ;-) Figure I can do a short excerpt with each one, and viola… promo. I’ll feel like I’ve actually done some.

Good idea?

Whipped Cream & Handcuffs is actually one of my older books~I think it was the second book I wrote for EC. It’s one of their short stories, a quick, fun little quickie~ of the friends-to-lovers type thing, but with with a secret admirer sort of twist.

This is still just in ebook form for now. It will go into print though, sooner or later.

Short excerpt below~it’s not too risque as far my erotic romance books go, but still, I wouldn’t read it at work.

Buy from Ellora’s Cave

When she still slept on, he slid the blindfold over her face, tying it securely after rolling her onto her side to face him. Then he dug out the padded restraints, and took her arms over her head, looping the restraints through the wrought iron slats on her headboard.

Still no sign of waking.

What to do first?

Tessa came awake slowly, certain she was dreaming. Big, hot hands, roughened with calluses, were stroking over her body, gently, soothingly. Bewildered, she opened her eyes but couldn’t see. And when she tried to move her hands, she couldn’t move.

But before panic could even set in, a rough, familiar voice whispered in her ear, “Don’t be afraid. I told you it would be soon. Tonight I am going to show you just how completely you are mine.”

“What are you doing here?” she gasped, unable to calm the fear that had filled her when she had wakened. She swore she felt him smile, felt the lazy heat of his amusement while he stared down at her.

“What do you think I am doing here, Tessa?” he asked quietly. His rough, low voice sent shivers down her spine, tightened her nipples. “I won’t hurt you. I’d never hurt you. I just want to touch you, feel how soft you are, feel you move underneath me while I ride
you. And we’ll wait a while before we bring out the whipped cream.”

He didn’t promise to leave out the handcuffs.

Oh, hell, it was really him.

“You…” she whispered shakily. Tiny darts of fear were indeed shooting through her, but she could feel no malice, no ill intent from this man, and she never had. His hands stroking over her felt loving, protective. “I want to see you.”

“Not yet, Tessa,” he whispered against her ear, nuzzling it gently before catching the fleshy lobe in his mouth and biting gently. “I told you how I wanted to take you.”

“You can’t,” she said weakly. “I don’t know you.”

He laughed, a soft, gentle sound as he kissed his way down her neck. “You’ve always known me.”

NEWSLETTER UPDATE

Just an FYI, due to computer issues, I lost the list of my newsletter subscribers. If you were on it and would like to continue to receive it, please send me another email… shilohnews@insightbb.com  newsletter link in sidebar as of 2011.  Please subscribe there.

And onto today’s post…

One line I see when I’m doing my various procrastinating bloghopping uh… working, yeah, we’ll call it working, is this…

Well, I like her but she’ll never be another…(fill in the blank).

It’s a line that as a reader confuses me. As a writer, I shrug it off. As competitive as I am, and trust me, I’m seriously competitive, I don’t want to be another anybody. I just want to write the best book that I can. I want to be the best writer I can be. So when I see it, the writer in me shrugs it off. I want to be as good as I can be. I don’t want to compare myself to another writer.

Don’t get me wrong~I so wish I could have been the genius that came up with Eve/Roarke or Cherijo/Duncan. But I wasn’t the genius and instead of trying to do something similar, I’d rather come up with my own brand of genius. (Hey, a girl can hope, right?)

The writer in me shrugs it off. But the reader in me gets confused and I mean seriously confused.

I adore the Stardoc books. I’ll push them on anybody who will listen to me and I’ve convinced some people who’ve never looked at science fiction to give them a try. I simply adore the books. When the series comes to an end, you shall hear a wail of mourning from the central US and it will be me.

But as much as I love them, I don’t want to find ‘another’ SL Viehl. One thing that makes her Stardoc books so fantastic is that they are unique.

Likewise on JD Robb and the Eve Dallas books. I love that series. But I don’t want another JD Robb cropping up.

The uniqueness of something is what makes it special~now granted, that might come from a lifetime of being told I’m not weird…I’m unique. Trust me, I’m weird, but I’m cool with that.

It’s kind of like…I dunno, chocolate. If you aren’t a chocolate addict, then fill in whatever food is your dream food. As much as you love it, imagine a diet of nothing but that. Ever. I think I’d rather never have chocolate again than to exist on nothing but chocolate.

It’s the same with books. If every book out there was similar, then nothing would stand out.

Nothing would be special.

And it would all get very, very boring.
